Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service Technical Note No: TX-PM-20-02 July 2020 A Guide on Common, Herbaceous, Hydrophytic Vegetation of Southern Texas Plant Materials Technical Note Horsetail Background: Wetlands are those lands that have saturated soils, shallow standing water or flooding during at least a portion of the growing season. These sites have soils that are saturated for at least two consecutive weeks during the growing season and support a distinct vegetation type adapted for life in saturated soil conditions. Purpose: The purpose of this Technical Note is to provide information on the use of some common wetland plants of southern Texas. The list includes plants found along the Guadalupe River around Tivoli southward to the Rio Grande River floodplain. It is not intended to be a comprehensive treatment of the wetland flora of this region. Rather it is intended to introduce to the reader the many common wetland plant species that occur in south Texas. The guide is broken down into four categories: wildlife habitat, shoreline erosion control, water quality improvement and landscaping. Each species has a brief description of its identifying features, notes on its ecology or habitat, use and its National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) assessment. For more detailed information we suggest referring to our listed references. All pictures came from the USDA Plants Data Base or the E. “Kika” de la Garza Plant Materials Center. Plants for wildlife habitat: The plants listed in this section are primarily for waterbird and waterfowl habitat as well as for fish nursery and spawning areas. -

CYPERACEAE Sauergrasgewächse SEDGES, aka BIESIES, SEGGEN Formally described in 1789 by De Jussieu. The family name is derived from the genus name Cyperus, from the Greek kupeiros, meaning sedge. Many species are grass-like, being tufted, with long, thin, narrow leaves, jointed stems, & branched inflorescence of small flowers, & are horticulturally lumped with grasses as graminoids. Archer (2005) suggests the term graminoid be used for true grasses, & cyperoid be used for sedges. (If physical anthropologists have hominoids & hominids, why don’t we have graminoids & graminids?) There are approximately 104 genera, 4 subfamilies, 14 tribes, & about 5000 species worldwide, with 27 genera & 843 species in North America (Ball et al 2002). -

Appendix A: City of Bellingham Native Plant List December 2020 The City of Bellingham Native Plant List (Figure 1) includes plant species that are native to Bellingham watersheds (Figure 2). The native plant list applies to all habitat types, including riparian, upland, and wetland areas. The list was developed using specimen records from the Consortium of Pacific Northwest Herbaria and Bellingham plant checklists curated by Don Knoke, a volunteer at the University of Washington Herbarium. To improve plant establishment and protect the genetic resources of our local plant populations, the City recommends using native plants that were grown from seeds or cuttings collected from the Puget Trough Ecoregion (Figure 3). Obtaining native plants grown from material collected from the Puget Trough Ecoregion will help ensure the plants are adapted to the unique environmental conditions of Bellingham watersheds and are genetically similar to our local plant populations. Mihail Sadoveanu, nr. 3, 700490–Iaşi, Romania Corresponding author: [email protected] This second part of the paper about the vascular flora of Rarău Massif listed approximately half of the whole number of the species registered by the authors in their field trips or already included in literature on the same area. Other taxa have been added to the initial list of plants, so that, the total number of taxa registered by the authors in Rarău Massif amount to 1443 taxa (1133 species and 310 subspecies, varieties and forms). There was signaled out the alien taxa on the surveyed area (18 species) and those dubious presence of some taxa for the same area (17 species). Also, there were listed all the vascular plants, protected by various laws or regulations, both internal or international, existing in Rarău (i.e. 189 taxa). Finally, there has been assessed the degree of wild flora conservation, using several indicators introduced in literature by Nowak, as they are: conservation indicator (C), threat conservation indicator) (CK), sozophytisation indicator (W), and conservation effectiveness indicator (E). INTRODUCTION A comprehensive analysis of Rarău flora, in terms of plant diversity, taxonomic structure, biological, ecological and phytogeographic characteristics, as well as in terms of the richness in endemics, relict or threatened plant species was published in our previous note (see Oprea & Sîrbu 2012).
