    The Reading Room: RECENT PENTECOSTAL SCANDALS By Paleo Pat, on April 8th, 2009 Reposted from http://www.politicalbyline.com/2009/04/08/the-reading- room-recent-pentecostal-scandals/ From its inception the Pentecostal movement has been marred deeply by scandals, as we have documented in our illustrated 317-page book The Pentecostal-Charismatic Movements: Its History and Its Error. If the movement had the fullness of the Holy Spirit unction and power that it claims, we would not see such an exhibition of the flesh, but in fact moral and other scandals have continued to plague it in recent history. The following are some prominent examples: In 1977 ORAL ROBERTS claimed that God had appeared to him and instructed him to build a medical center called the CITY OF FAITH. In 1980 he claimed that he had a ³face to face´ conversation with a 900-foot-tall Jesus who told him that he was going to solve the City of Faith financial problems. Seven years later, Roberts said that God had appeared to him yet again and told him that he would die if he did not raise $8 million within 12 months. The wild-eyed visions and unrelenting appeals could not save the City of Faith. In 1989 Roberts closed it to pay off debts! Yet the Pentecostal world in general did not decry Roberts as a false prophet and a religious phony. Thousands continued to flock to ORU from Pentecostal churches across the country, and millions of dollars continued to flow into Roberts¶ ministry from gullible supporters. In 1989 JIM BAKKER, head of the very influential Pentecostal PTL television program went to prison for defrauding his followers out of $158 million.

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Studies of religion and fandom have generally considered sincere devotion a fundamental point of contact between the two cultural phenomena, an assumption not reflected in fan studies proper. This dissertation aims to expand the scope of research on religion and fandom by offering cultural histories of “unfaithful” fan followings of three controversial American televangelists – Robert Tilton, Tammy Faye Bakker/Messner, and Jim Bakker – dating from the 1980s to 2012, and consisting of individuals amused by, rather than religiously affiliated with, their chosen television preachers. It is argued that through their ironic, parodic, and satirical play with celebrity preachers widely believed to be religious fakes, these unfaithful fans have engaged in religious work related to personal and public negotiations of authentic Christianity. Additionally, it is demonstrated that through their activities, and in particular through their media practices, these fans have impacted the brands and mainstream representations of certain televangelists, and have provoked ministry responses including dismissal, accommodation, and counteraction. iii Acknowledgements Family comes first. In February 2016, the cities of Shawnee and Lenexa entered into an agreement with the Johnson County Mental Health Center (JCMHC) to fund a shared part-time mental health co-responder. Due to the program's success, both cities recognized a need for expansion of this program where each City will have its own full-time co-responder. An agreement with JCMHC is required. Recommendation: Consider approving substantive terms of Contract No. 2018-0002, a Cooperative Memorandum of Understanding with the Johnson County Mental Health Center for the Co-Responder Program, and authorizing the Mayor to sign a final agreement as approved by the City Attorney. The hazy and hot weather of the past week prompted a call Friday from the governor and utilities for PMple to cut back on their use of electricity, a request to cut back on water use in some communities and a warning about unhealthy air over parts of Connecticut. As temperatures in the state approached record highs. Gov. William A. O ’Neill issued an appeal to all Connecticut residents to conserve electricity to avoid a problems with an energy shortage. “It doesn't appear that we have an energy shortage per se. but the extent to which we can avoid one would certainly beneflt us as a state." O ’Neill said Just before o a r i n g the air conditioner in his omce turned off. “let’s start right here.” O’Neill said as the air conditioner was switched off. The governor’s statement echoed an appeal from the New England Power Pool which Friday re­ quested all electric customers to avoid using any unnecessary elect­ ric appliances or lighting until further notice. Jeff Kotkin, a spokesman for Northeast Utilities said the request was made in cooperation with all electric companies in the reckon because several generating plants, both fossil fuel and nuclear, were out of service because of mechani­ cal problems. This collection of unusual buildings is home to an alternative health center established by two remarkable people: Hugh D. Riordan and Olive W. Garvey. My husband, Hugh, was a physician ahead of his time; Olive was a generous philanthropist who understood the value of his foresight. In 1975, he and Olive conceived of The Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning. Today, it is well known and highly regarded for its patient-centered, nutritional approach to healing.
