The first is the retirement of Helen Beer, and the second, the appointment of a new Lecturer in Yiddish. Dr Helen Beer left us in July, after more than twenty years in the Department. As the Department’s second Benzion Margulies Lecturer in Yiddish (succeeding Hugh Denman), Helen has been a major figurehead, a role model, and a source of great inspiration. Her very popular courses in Yiddish language (on four levels) and in Yiddish culture and literature have attracted cohort after cohort of degree students, continuing education students, and research students, who have remained forever Helen’s fans and friends and have inspired them to pursue Yiddish in many creative ways. Photo of Helen and Sonia at Ot Azoy 2019 from https://www.jmi.org.uk/event/ot-azoy-2019/ 02 In her role as Department Tutor, the personal support she gave students, sometimes running to many hours through the day, has been exemplary; it is true to say that she saved many students from falling. Her most colourful contribution to the Department has been, beyond any doubt, her drama productions in the Bloomsbury Theatre and at the annual Purim spiel. In the last decade (maybe even earlier) she began writing and producing her own spiels, often on topical themes such as Brexit (a broch!) and – yes, you’ve guessed – Donald Trump. Helen remains with us in an honorary capacity, but I wish her well in retirement, and above all, I owe her a big, personal thank you. The departure of Helen precipitated a challenge, as funding for the position was beginning to dwindle and the viability of the lectureship came under severe questioning. It was by no means a foregone conclusion that we would be able to appoint a successor. However, with the support of a substantial grant from a generous funder, we were eventually able to advertise the position, and secure the long-term future of Yiddish in the Department. Following a rigorous recruitment process, we have appointed Dr Sonia Gollance to the position. Sonia has been, until recently, Director of Yiddish Studies at The Ohio State University, and she is currently a Teaching and Research Associate (Universitätsassistent) in Vienna. She is a great scholar in Yiddish and German-Jewish Studies, with a specialization in literature, dance, theatre, and gender. 03 Her first book, based on her University of Pennsylvania doctoral thesis, will be published this year with Stanford University Press, under the engaging title: It Could Lead to Dancing: Mixed-Sex Dancing and Jewish Modernity. Sonia has also been active in the Digital Yiddish Theatre Project, in dance and drama productions, and many more creative projects. Her research and her work in the performative arts intersect with the work of many other colleagues in the Department. Staff and students all look forward to welcoming her in the Department, from this coming September, where she will be offering courses in Yiddish language, literature, and culture. There is a historical twist to this appointment: Sonia is not the first Gollance in the Department. Dr Hermann Gollancz (b. Bremen 1852 – d. London 1930) was Goldsmid Professor of Hebrew at UCL from 1902 to 1924, and indeed, the first Jew to earn a doctorate from the University of London (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/hebrew-jewish/about/our-history). Related or not (this needs more research!), it is nice to be reminded of our illustrious history. She was the greatest inspiration for many and loved by all of us. We will often think of her wonderful Yiddish lectures, creative Purim spiels and her warmest personality. We wish she enjoys her retirement life and hope to H see her around sometimes! Congratulation to the fantastic Sonia who will be our new Yiddish lecturer from September 2021. We are very excited to meet her and welcome Sher to the department! The 2020 department Hanukkah party was held on Zoom, the atmosphere was great as usual but we did miss the jelly donuts very much and do Zhope to meet each other in person soon! 05 C H A B A D By Mark Geller B E R L I N One of the impressive changes taking place in Jewish Berlin over the past 30 years has been the impact of Chabad, which also changed me personally, in ways which I did not anticipate. I should explain that I first came to reside in Germany for a year in 1980, to Munich, and I was somewhat appalled by the central synagogue. Despite the grand interior, the synagogue was run informally like a shtiebl in an Eastern European shtetl, from where most of the community originated. I did not meet any Yekkes.
