2 Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe 3 Bishop’s Foreword

In these days of instant electronic communication, laptops, websites, wi-fi, smart-phones and the like, it could be argued that there is no longer any need for a hard-copy, paper Diocesan Directory of this sort.

That may prove to be the case in the future, but we are not there yet. Many of us still find it important and valuable to have the information made available to us in this Directory at our fingertips in a tangible, paper format.

So we are grateful to those who have made possible its production again this year. Our dedicated and patient editor, Canon David Crooks, once again has risen to the task with his usual enthusiasm, efficiency and flair. Those who have agreed to advertise have generously decided to do so in these more demanding economic times. And the printers, DCG Publications, have skillfully managed the project, making it possible for the Directory to be made available to parishes free of charge.

We are indebted to all of them. † Ken Derry and Raphoe

Front Cover Picture The photograph on the front cover is of the newly-restored St. Columb's Cathedral, Londonderry. During 2010 and 2011, extensive renovations were carried out at the Cathedral, which involved chipping out old cement and replacing it with a better quality of cement both in the north and south ailses and in other parts of the interior, as well as in the whole exterior of the building. Some years earlier, the tower and spire were similarly restored. The grounds of the Cathedral have also been newly laid out and landscaped. The result of all this work, costing almost £4 million, is plain to see. The whole Cathedral, inside and out is now looking magnificent and is in splendid condition. Another major project, which was completed in 2006, was the building of the new Wells Kennedy four manual organ, costing £550,000. This is one of the largest and finest organs in Ireland. All of this work has been undertaken during the incumbency of the Very Rev'd Dr. William Morton, Dean of Derry, ably supported by Canon John Merrick, the Select Vestry, the Friends of the Cathedral and parishioners and many others. The Architects were the firm of Mullarkey Pederson. We congratulate the Dean and the Parish of Templemore, and wish them every blessing for the future. The Rev Paul Hoey, our newly appointed Parish Development Officer facilitated these energising evenings as we discussed issues relating to vision and values. These meeting were well attended and the feedback has been very positive.

As part of Transforming Community, Radiating Christ, our clergy under the leadership of Bishop Ken, spent five days at Trinity College, Bristol, a Church of England Theological College. Developing the skills of clergy is an ongoing and vital part of our work and our link with Bristol is helping to The Games of the XXX Olympiad, better known to us as the London 2012 Olympic Games is formulate new thinking and build closer bonds to be staged between 27 July and 12 August 2012. This year we will explore these important questions further as we engage in The Diocesan Council generously donated “MOVING ON.” There is a much greater prize awaiting us than an Olympic Gold medal. £1,000/ €1,200 to each parish as a “Gift for Growth.” Parishes spent the money on supporting their current projects or developing “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, new schemes. The “Gift for Growth” has been “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, gratefully accepted and appreciated. plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 During the early summer many young people from DRY (Derry and Raphoe Youth) as part of TCRC spent a very enjoyable few days in Dungiven helping the local community improve their environment.

The theme at many of our harvest services in 2011 was “Sowing Seeds – Growing Seeds” which complemented our “Gift for Growth” scheme. As we thanked God for the blessing of harvest we included our thanks for the fruits of our parish initiatives.

Rev Paul Hoey took up his post as Parish Development Officer for the Dioceses of Parish development starts with parish but doesn’t end with it. It takes seriously the Derry and Raphoe in the autumn of 2011. Here he shares something of his vision. challenge of Archbishop William Temple who stated that the church is the only organisation that exists for the sake of those not its members. It’s constantly asking the What is parish development, and why does it matter? question, “How do we put our church on the map for people in our area? How do we make sure that about the way church had made it hard for people like her to have their say. “You may everyone in the parish understands and owns our plans, and how do we get the not realise it”, she said, “but apart from the many positives differences that programme message across to those who pass by each day? made to our church but for me personally it brought about real transformation. Two years after a parish had undergone its own parish development programme I was back in the hall for a diocesan meeting. When I bumped into the rector my question was And, finally, parish development is a process. It’s not something that solves all a parish’s “has the programme been making any long-term difference in the parish?” “Come with problem in a couple of meetings. It’s something that involves listening to God and to each me”, he replied. He took me first to a room where some women were meeting to pray other. It takes time and patience to allow God’s priorities for a parish to come to surface. and read the Bible together. “This wasn’t happening before,” he said. Then he took me further on to a room where a Parent and Toddler Group was in progress. He pointed What is the alternative? Well, it was Albert Einstein who said that it’s a sign of madness out half a dozen parents. “None of them was here”, he said. “Now some are even coming to keep on doing the same things over and over again and hope for a different result. along to church.” Finally, we stopped in the kitchen where a dozen men were enjoying So perhaps the alternative to parish development is madness? tea and toast. They told me how they met every Wednesday morning to do odd jobs about the church property and then enjoy their tea together. Afterwards, the rector explained What, in practice, is involved? that most of the men had been loosely connected to the parish but that this group had given them a way to use their skills and a way in to belonging. He also remarked that many It usually starts by getting a representative group of people together to talk about their of the conversations they had over the tea had turned to spiritual issues. hopes and frustrations as they think about the future. Out of this can emerge a sense of certain things that need to be addressed if the parish is to move forward. A plan can Parish development is anything that helps a parish develop or grow. But, as the above then be formulated and goals set. From there on it’s a matter of working out who does incidents illustrate, it is in essence about helping people to grow – in faith, in what, how and by when. Of course, the whole process needs to be steeped in prayer involvement and in commitment. otherwise we may end up simply with good ideas when what we really want is God’s ideas.

Parish development is about helping churches discover what they might need to do As things begin to happen there is generally a need for training people up to undertake differently if they are to fulfil their full potential. Many churches have a sense that, in a various parts of the plan and this too is part of the task of parish development. rapidly changing world, some of what they have been doing is no longer meeting the needs of people in a way that it once did, but they are not sure how to go about changing Many parishes find it helpful to have someone from outside, an objective guide or things or where to start. Parish development can help them discern a few key priorities. facilitator, to steer them through the journey. And that is part of the role of our Parish Development Officer.
