1. An Overview

The role of an educational institution is unequivocally significant for substantive development and progress of a society towards normative ideals. While the prescribed syllabi and requirements of curriculum can be covered in a variety of manner by students and teachers, it is the institutional environment that makes the difference. As an enabling space, educational institutions disseminate knowledge and equip students with tools to apply this knowledge in challenging realities of life with rigour and confidence. It is in this aspect that the intrinsic value or quality of an educational institution can be deciphered.

As an educational institution, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College, Dev Nagar, Karol Bagh, with its hard working, empathetic teachers and staff members aims at providing students an enabling environment to learn, prosper and progress in a holistic manner. Our College is a constituent College of the University of Delhi which was established in the year 1973. At that time the College was known as Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa (Evening) College. The College became a full-fledged Day College in the academic year 2005-06 and acquired the noble name, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College after the first Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Nanak. Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (D.S.G.M.C.) is the parent body that manages our College and strives to impart education by blending modern education curriculum with justice based, equality oriented, and society-centric moral teachings of Sri Guru Nanak ji. This is clearly outlined in vision and aim of our College which focuses on becoming an educational institution of academic excellence with a human face.

In terms of mobility, the location of College in Dev Nagar, Karol Bagh is a boon for our students, teachers and other staff members. The College is situated with immediate access to bus service. In addition to this, Delhi Metro Stations and railway station of Indian railway network are situated nearby College which provides easy accessibility to students coming from far flung areas of Delhi and adjoining regions.

For fostering and catering the needs and aspirations of Sikh community with regard to higher education, our College was granted minority status by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions. Our College is fulfilling this constitutional duty with utmost vigour and vitality. The College believes in the philosophy of equality of mankind that gets reflected in noble words, Maanas Ki Jaat Sabhai Ekai Pehchanbo and in our constitutional vision of fraternity, and ‗one man one value.‘ With both these responsibilities and vision laid upon us, our College, despite being a Minority College has kept its doors open for all. The College is eagerly and equitably providing qualitative higher education in every capacity to all the students. We are sensitive to aspirations of every learner who takes admission in our College for building up a bright future. This has helped and is continuously helping our College to develop an environment where culture of tolerance, plurality, dialogue and respect for significant other blossoms and flourishes. The enabling environment of College gets further strengthened by success made by our College at academic fronts in the University of Delhi. Having constituted a composite culture

4

that provides a vibrant environment to our learners, our College is working diligently to develop rigorous and thought provoking academic environment by encouraging progressive and innovative ideas. It is delightful and inspiring to share that our College was awarded B++ grade with a score of 2.76 in its first accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

The sphere of higher education is undergoing through a tremendous transformational phase with increased emphasis on student centric outcome based education. Our College is enthusiastically participating and becoming an active agent of this transformation. In order to ensure outcome based education and to keep our students and teachers at pace with the global trends, our College has started using its infrastructure meticulously to ensure that best teaching practices are adopted and academic culture gets further enhanced. We have been successful in providing smooth computer, internet and audio-visual facilities that enhance the classroom experience. The variety of courses offered by our College in the Humanities, Commerce and Science streams at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels are taught in an interdisciplinary mode as outlined by the University Grants Commission and University of Delhi. Under this, students are learning the core of their disciplines with inputs from subjects of other disciplines. This has led to advancement in their thinking capabilities. We are consistently improving our mode of teaching and learning with increased emphasis on project work, ICT based presentations, smart boards, exhibitions and quiz etc.

The learning environment in College has gained momentously from different seminars, talks and workshops that were organized at the departmental and College level in the academic year 2018-2019. These seminars, workshops and talks witnessed presence of experts, well known academicians and inspiring speakers who shared their updated research findings and newly emerging issues with students. Unlike conventional mode of learning that focuses on one way communication, our College encourages interactive sessions with students in class, seminar, talks where they become active and co-agents of knowledge creation with teachers and eminent speakers. While above mentioned strategies are significant, these are not enough for the holistic development of the student. Therefore, our College organized field visits for students to different places where people living on the margins reside, social awareness programmes on different critical issues, provocative street plays and gender sensitization acts etc. This helped students to develop reflective thinking on social issues that engulf our society and sensitized them towards the less privileged sections of our nation. The National Service Scheme, Dramatic Society and others have been very active on this front.

All of this became possible with constant involvement of and support from our faculty members who are known and valued for their academic credentials, innovative teaching methodologies and never ending zeal for constant knowledge dispersal. However, learning is a two way process where teachers and students are equal shareholders. To positively nurture the learning process, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of our College organized a number of Faculty Development Programmes on variety of issues like goals of higher education, learning management systems, quality assurance in higher education etc. that has immensely benefitted our faculty members and added to their expertise. It is inspiring to share 5

that our faculty members have been fervent in applying the skills gained from these workshops in their teaching. We are actively fulfilling and working towards maintaining the set standards and strive to excel in it. Our College is equally focussing on research oriented learning of teachers. The cumulative effect of these developments is clearly visible in academic graph of the students that has shown upward trend in this academic year as well.

The success of students in sports and unleashing of talent in cultural events have further contributed to the enabling environment of our College. Though our College has constraint of space and absence of a sport field, it has not stopped our enthusiastic students from performing in an exemplary manner in sports events of inter-college, university, state and national level. Like the previous academic year, our talented Para athlete Prashant brought name and fame to the college. Excellent performances by Arshadeep Singh Sidhu, Rahul and Atul Kumar have further added to the College‘s pride. Our College successfully conducted the Annual Cultural Fest ‗Surlok 2019‘ where students showed their creative instinct through means of debate, quiz, dance, theatre etc. In addition to this, many other cultural activities were also organized by the College in academic year 2018-2019.

Inclusion remains an important aspect to understand the nature of educational institution. Having developed a vibrant academic and plural culture where ideas flourish and prosper, our College has now joined the exclusive club of University of Delhi Colleges by conducting special sports event for the visually impaired students. Keeping in line with international and national standards that demand inclusion of differently abled in sports activities, our College organized ‗Ankur: Athletic Meet for Visually Impaired‘ for inculcating self confidence in the differently abled students and making them part of the mainstream as agent of development. To imbibe students with ethical and moral values, our College has recently started Bisman: Centre for Human Values, so that we are able to provide well educated, humble and concerned citizens to work for society.

The College is continuously working for improving the standards of education, expansion of the digitization process, furthering of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) facility, maintaining an efficient working environment, eco-friendly infrastructure etc.
