A Way of Proceeding: Ethical Decision-Making for Management Students at Jesuit Colleges Photo credit: University of San Francisco By Kimberly Rae Connor, PhD Created for the University of San Francisco MBA Program Fall 2020 © Kimberly Rae Connor Introduction and Acknowledgements What follows is a suggestion for how to teach Ethical Decision-Making for graduate students at Jesuit universities and colleges. This content has also been adapted for undergraduates. This course is based on a seven-week instructional model. We included citations for readings but not full text. We reasoned that instructors may wish to choose or update the readings; also, the combined text with readings would be unwieldy. Included are a course syllabus with assignments for groups and individuals, a redacted list of suggested readings, and lectures for each weekly topic. Concluding the Ethical Decision-Making “book” is an appendix of a program called the Management Exercises. In the tradition of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, the Management Exercises reflect the more – the magis – to better prepare students as leaders and citizens. The Management Exercises seek to further orient students toward a life of questioning and engagement as students learn to exercise discernment, to build character, and to enact citizenship. To participate in the Management Exercises is to reflect on one’s journey through life. Management Exercises was designed to be an online program for MBA students that also included face-to-face gatherings of cohorts of students. Management Exercises also included a graded component; each module was linked to academic coursework. Students were introduced to the program in Ethical Decision-Making, an early core course, which set a strong foundation for the program. More information about how to add Management Exercises to a program or how to apply it in other settings is included in this appendix. I wish to thank Juman Khweis for editing and assembling this text, especially laboring under pandemic circumstances. Also, thanks to Charlotte Roh, librarian at Gleeson Library at the University of San Francisco, who also provided a grant and encouragement to create Open Access resources. The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. i The Iconic News Image as Visual Event in Photojournalism and Digital Media A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In Media Studies At Massey University, Manawatu New Zealand Samantha Diane Kelly 2013 ii Abstract This thesis shows how the uses and meanings of the iconic news image have changed with the emergence of digital media. Most of the iconic photographs of the twentieth century were produced by photojournalists and published in mass circulation newspapers and magazines. In the twenty–first century, amateurs have greater access to image producing technologies and greater capacity to disseminate their images through the Internet. This situation has made possible the use of iconic news images to support political agendas other than those promoted in the media institutions and beyond the range of censorship imposed by those media. In order to demonstrate the functions and understand this unprecedented situation, this thesis explores how iconic news images produce meaning. I consider formal definitions of iconic news images but adopt Nicholas Mirzoeff's theory of the visual event to explain how the meanings of iconic news images are impacted by historical context, media institutions and viewer responses. This dynamic model of visual communication allows us to see that iconic news images indeed function as events and that there is a political struggle over the creation, staging, publication and interpretation of those events.

The event took placed in Los Angeles at The Grammy Museum. That marked the beginning of our relationship with MusiCares. In partnership with the Grammy’s Foundation, MusiCares, panel discussion were curated for creatives and executives in the music industry that enabled a safe space to discuss mental health and wellness in the music industry.     ABSTRACT Title of Document: EMBRACING MATHEMATICS IDENTITY IN AN AFRICAN-CENTERED SCHOOL: CONSTRUCTION AND INTERACTION OF RACIAL AND MATHEMATICAL STUDENT IDENTITIES Farhaana Nyamekye, Ph.D, 2010 Directed By: Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, Daniel Chazan, Curriculum and Instruction This dissertation is a report of a multiple case study of eight seventh grade African American students attending an African-centered school. This African-centered school is attended solely by children of African descent and adheres to a system of African cultural values, focusing on culture, relationships, and academic excellence. The report provides in depth case analyses of two of these students as they navigate their multiple identities. The foci of the analyses are on the students‟ construction of their math learner identities and racial identities and on their construction of both of these identities taken together. Phenomenological variant of ecological systems theory illuminates the challenges and supports that these students encounter in constructing their identities. The mathematics and racial socialization practices within the school and within the students‟ home environments are documented within this report as support mechanisms that provide opportunities for the students to construct identities as African American mathematics learners. The findings suggest that academic spaces that reduce the stress of racism and help students to value their racial identity may be particularly important spaces for other African American mathematics learners. The findings also have positive implications for the implementation of African and African American cultural practices and programs that can help other African American learners to positively construct identities as both African Americans and math learners. The documented findings raise critical questions about whether other African American learners, despite the heterogeneity within this population, would benefit from African-centered schooling.

ABSTRACT This research concerns the process of college women’s emotional labor in sexual decision-making and how women talk about their sexual decisions via their negotiation of dominant social discourses. The study seeks to determine how the college experience nurtures women’s sexual subjectivity; how it affects their negotiation of sexual messaging and social dominant discourse; and how it impacts the emotional work involved in the process. The study was conducted at three college campuses that vary relative to institutional type (i.e., public vs. private), social class, and race. The research was conducted in fall 2006 at Center State University, and in the spring and summer 2010 semesters at Northeast University and Upper Lake Community College. The qualitative study involved eight focus groups and 20 in-depth interviews and a total of 48 participants.
