The research and report were performed by Mr. R. Aubrey Abeyesekera, Graduate Instructor in Research on our staff under the direction of Professors C. W. Lovell and L. E. Wood on our staff and W. J. Sisiliano, Soils Engineer of the ISHC. The report includes the results of laboratory testing of a mechanically hard but non-durable shale from the New Providence Formation in Indiana. The compaction, consolidation and shearing characteristics of the shale are presented, as well as the testing procedures used. The report should be an aid to ISHC engineers in evaluating the stress-deformation characteristics and effective stress strength parameters of compacted shales. The report is submitted as partial fulfillment of the overall objectives of the research project. Abstroct vThen shales are encountered in road cuts, economic and environmental consider- ations usually dictate that they be used in adjoining embankments. However, unless special precautions are taken, the stability of a shale embankment can deteriorate with time on account of the non-durable nature of some shales in the presence of water. Various tests have been developed to classify shales. This report presents the results of a laboratory investigation to determine the influence of compaction and confining pressure on the stress-deformation and strength characteristics of a mechanically hard but non-durable shale from the New Providence Formation. Some construction guidelines are also recommended. Cylindrical specimens formed by kneading compaction were saturated under a low effective confining pressure, consolidated to the desired effective stress and sheared at a constant rate of strain. The compaction characteristics, the volume changes after saturation, the consolidation characteristics, and the undrained shearing response including pore water pressure changes are reported for triaxial tests, The initial gradation of crushed shale aggregate, the molding water content, the compaction pressure, and the pre-shear consolidation pressure were adopted as the test variables. The effective stress strength parameters were found to be essentially in- dependent of the initial conditions when they were evaluated at maximum deviator stress, except for loose uncompacted aggregate. The volume change characteristics, the induced pore water pressures, and the consolidated undrained strength were found to be greatly dependent on the initial conditions. 17. Key Words 18. Droste and Alan Stanley Horowitz Department of Geology Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana 47405 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to present the general stratigraphy of the Har- dinsburg Formation, Stephensport Group (Figure 1), in the subsurface of Indiana and to consider factors that have combined to create a belt of massive sandstones in the Hardinsburg in southwestern Indiana. These Mississippian rocks lie near the Lower Carboniferous Visean-Namurian series boundary of international ter- minology. The study area (Figure 2) is south of the northern boundaries of Sullivan and Greene Counties and west of the eastern boundaries of Greene, Martin, and Dubois Counties. The data for this report were taken from well information on file with the Indiana Geological Survey, Bloomington (Table 1). Initially, the records of ap- proximately 12,000 wells were inspected. A single well per section was selected for construction of the thickness maps, and no more than three wells per section were chosen to construct the cross sections. Intensive drilling for petroleum throughout much of the study area provides at least one well per section for which both well samples and a geophysical log are available. In areas of less dense drilling, we necessarily used wells for which either samples or wire-line logs existed. Harbison State Highway Engineer Chairman, Research Committee SUBJECT: Research Report No. 390; 11 A Rock Evaluation Schema for Transportation Planning in Kentucky; 11 Soil mantles and bedrock systems in Kentucky are being well defined pedologically and geologically. Agricultural soils maps, together with topographic and geological quadrangle maps, provide excellent, megascopic information for land-use guidance and site planning. In some respects, the agricultural and geologic technologies have surpassed or by-passed soil-and-rock mechanics -- that is, the engineering technology. During the past several years, the Soil Conservation Service in Kentucky has included engineering data and descriptions furnished by the Research Division in their publications. Also, U.S.G.S. notes some engineering information on the new, geological quadrangle maps. For instance, they note some aggregate sources and fossil slides and instances where highway embankments have shown a history of instability. As mentioned, engineering data on soils has been steadily accumulated during the past 25 years. It is now possible in many areas to indicate the most probable value of some properties and the expected range and variability. Rock data have not been accumulated; and, so, the purpose of the report submitted herewith is to bring into view the possibilities of beginning to assemble and catalog rock data in an orderly way for eventual reporting along with soils data. The Bureau of Highways is the principal source of engineering data for soils and produces extensive footages or rock cores from borings at bridge sites and along highway corridors.

Horowitz Department of Geological Sciences Indiana University 1005 East 10th Street Bloomington, Indiana 47405 ABSTRACT: The axial trend of belt sand bodies in the Hardinsburg Formation in Indiana shows striking similarities to the axial trends of belt sand bodies in earlier Chesterian formations of the West Baden Group and in the overlying Tar Springs and Waltersburg Formations. Droste and Horowitz (1990) postulated that the belt sand bodies of the Hardinsburg Formation in Indiana resulted from focussed current action on quartz sands funnelled along sea floor lows. The sea floor lows marked locations where local increased rates of subsidence were produced by subtle adjust- ments in basement structures. We infer that all the belt sands in the Indiana Chesterian resulted from deposition controlled by the same factors and that their trends mark locations of changing loci of minor basement structural adjustments These trends are generally parallel to the tectonic movements that produced the structures associated with the LaSalle Anticlinal Belt and Wabash Valley Fault System. INTRODUCTION In this review, our principal purpose is to illustrate that the axial trend of belt sand bodies in the Hardinsburg Formation in Indiana shows striking similarities to the axial trends of several other belt sand bodies in other Chesterian formations in Indiana. Potter (1962, 1963) has published a classification of elongate sand bodies, and we use herein his characterization of belt sand bodies. CHESTERIAN BELT SANDSTONES Major belt sand bodies in the subsurface of Indiana occur in the West Baden Group, the Stephensport Group, and in the lower part of the Buffalo Wallow Group (Figure 1).

Shilts, Chief Dedication This report is dedicated to the late Elwood Atherton (1909-2000), stratigrapher at the Illinois State Geological Survey from 1937 through 1983. Dr. Atherton was instrumental in developing the current classification of Chesterian rocks, mainly through interpretation of electric logs and well samples. In particular, he described in detail the samples from hundreds of wells penetrating Chesterian rocks throughout Illinois. These sample logs mention many features of great significance to sequences stratigraphy. Without Elwood Atherton 's sample logs, our own report might never have been undertaken.
