LUGOSI IN HOLLYWOOD: A HUNGARIAN ACTOR'S RISE AND FALL AS A MOVIE STAR KEVIN E. KELLY Gallipolis Daily Tribune, Gallipolis, Ohio, U.S.A. Béla Lugosi, the actor most identified with the role of Count Dracula, the Transylvanian vampire immortalized in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula and in countless stage and screen adaptations, fled Hungary in 1919 to escape almost certain punishment and perhaps death for his brief and somewhat naïve involvement with the socialist movement that swept the country immediately after World War I. He left Europe two years later to seek the promise of a stage career and wealth offered in the United States. Fame and fortune he did find in the late 1920s with his portrayal of Dracula in the Broadway production of the popular Hamilton Deane-John L. Balderston version of the Stoker novel, and his star rose even further when he starred in the 1931 Hollywood film drawn from the novel and the play. Unfortunately, it would be the pinnacle of his professional career, and his stardom in the American film capital, would be brief. Years of roles in atrocious films and the ever-present shadow of Dracula would follow, culminating in near-unemploya- bility in the years preceding his death in 1956. While a number of Lugosi's countrymen, such as Paul Lukas and Victor Varconi, also emigrated to Hollywood and at first received starring roles as suave Continental types, they were eventually committed to character roles for the rest of their careers. Lugosi, however found to his everlasting regret that Dracula put him in a particular niche - as a star of horror films, with the resultant typecasting barring him from the varied roles that Lukas, for example, would enjoy as a supporting player for several decades. -

MODERN LIBRARY COLLECTION - LIST The Modern Library collection is comprised of a total of 1,917 volumes. It contains 613 titles (from a total of 621) issued in the first Modern Library series from 1917 through 1970, of which 537 are first Modern Library editions. Of the remaining titles, 20 are revisions of earlier releases and 56 fall into a period between 1960-64 and part of 1965, when first Modern Library Editions were not designated as such (see Andes APPENDIX III). Another 1,304 volumes represent variants of titles that remained in the series for many years in a variety of bindings, with several different endpapers, title-pages, and dust wrappers. The list is arranged alphabetically by author/title and numbered 1 – 613, with variants given beneath the main entry. The concept To take the original DRACULA story by Bram Stoker and update this powerful modern myth so that we can ask questions about Climate Change and how humans damage the natural environment of this planet earth. Act 1 An airport in the USA in a few year’s time. A huge storm has led to all flights being cancelled. There is chaos. We meet a passenger desperate to get a flight . His name is Jonathan Harker and he must get to Pennsylvania for an important business meeting. He finally persuades a drunken man to drive him to his destination many miles away. He travels through a nightmare land, destroyed by industry and pollution. There are terrible storms and endless rain. He arrives at Dracula’s Tower, a broken skyscraper. He is rescued from a mob of alcoholics and beggars by a helicopter and eventually meets Dracula at night in the Count’s comfortable office in the heart of the burnt out skyscraper. Harker wants to sell old properties in Eco town to Dracula. Eco town is a environmentally progressive small city that hopes to be a model for future responsible living on the earth. But it is in financial trouble. Harker’s boss is Lucy Renfield, who pushes him to complete the deal and save Ecotown, whatever the problems or moral compromises. Dracula is interested in buying the old houses in Ecotown that have cellars. He terrifies Harker but it seems the deal can be sealed. Dracula extracts a lot of personal information from Harker including the name and details of his fiancée, Mina – an alternative medicine Doctor and leading personality in Ecotown. -

During that time vampires have evolved with society. Even from the time the Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula was published in 1897 to the first on-screen depiction of Dracula, there is change. Dracula doesn’t bring to mind the fearsome, corpse-like monster that Stoker created, but images of Bela Lugosi in the classic 1931 film. Today the “Bela Lugosi” Dracula has become the quintessential vampire. His long, black opera cape and tuxedo are the standard attire for the twentieth and twenty-first century vampire. Dracula is not a static creature, and has changed with the times. As society becomes more comfortable with sex, Dracula does as well. Thus it is important to examine not only what led to the “birth” of Dracula but also the social situations which have changed the way Dracula is portrayed in film and literature. WALKER EVANS IN NEW YORK: PHOTOGRAPHY AND URBAN CULTURE, 1927–1934 A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Antonello Frongia August 2015 © 2015 Antonello Frongia ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WALKER EVANS IN NEW YORK: PHOTOGRAPHY AND URBAN CULTURE, 1927–1934 Antonello Frongia, Ph.D. Cornell University, 2015 This dissertation offers the first systematic study of the photographs taken by Walker Evans in New York City and its vicinity between 1927 and 1934, a formative period that preceded the full consecration of his work in the second half of the 1930s. About 200 urban photographs in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum and a significant body of negatives in the Metropolitan Museum’s Walker Evans Archive indicate that Evans’s early work was mostly devoted to the theme of the modern me- tropolis. Cross-referencing Evans’s images with contemporary photographs, aerial views, architectural plans, insurance maps, drawings, and verbal descriptions, this study aims to identify the exact subjects, the places, and whenever possible the dates of this previ- ously uncharted body of urban photographs. The resulting catalog of over 300 images suggests the contours of an unfinished project on New York City that Evans developed in the years immediately preceding and following the Wall Street crash of 1929. On a different level, this dissertation addresses the question of Evans’s visual educa- tion in the context of the “transatlantic modernism” of the 1920s and ’30s. In particular, it shows that Evans, despite his early literary ambitions, was fully conversant with the work of visual artists, architects, and critics of the Machine Age. -
