I'm Gonna Swing
ACCESS ALL AREAS... CHANDELIER APPEARS IN ROCK & POP 2018 Released: 2014 Album: 1000 Forms of Fear Label: Inertia, Monkey Puzzle, RCA Records ABOUT THE SONG ‘Chandelier’ was released in March 2014 as the lead single from Sia’s sixth studio album 1000 Forms of Fear. It was a top-10 hit in over 25 countries and I’M GONNA FLY LIKE A BIRD sold more than three million copies in the US alone. Billboard listed ‘Chandelier’ as the best song of 2014 THROUGH THE NIGHT, and it received several nominations at the 57th Grammy Awards. FEEL MY TEARS AS THEY DRY ‘Chandelier’ catapulted Sia to international fame, but “ she was a reluctant superstar. Having decided not to I’M GONNA SWING show her face in videos and promotional materials, the publicity-shy Sia often performed ‘Chandelier’ with her face concealed or her back to the camera. FROM THE CHANDELIER RECORDING AND PRODUCTION Sia was in semi-retirement in the early 2010s, co-writing songs with artists such as David Guetta and Rihanna. An impromptu jam session with producer Jesse Shatkin on marimba and Sia on piano led to the chords, melody and lyrics of ‘Chandelier’ in less than 20 minutes. Originally written as a potential hit for Rihanna or Beyoncé, Sia eventually released the song herself. It was produced by Shatkin and Greg Kurstin, with the pair playing all instruments. Sia’s vocal was recorded at Hot Closet Studios in California in less than 15 minutes. ” COMPOSITION ‘Chandelier’ is an electropop ballad with a melancholy tone; the lyrics are about the disillusionment of relentless partying. -
The Ensouled Violin by Helena P
The Ensouled Violin By Helena P. Blavatsky I In the year 1828, an old German, a music teacher, came to Paris with his pupil and settled unostentatiously in one of the quiet faubourgs of the metropolis. The first rejoiced in the name of Samuel Klaus; the second answered to the more poetical appellation of Franz Stenio. The younger man was a violinist, gifted, as rumor went, with extraordinary, almost miraculous talent. Yet as he was poor and had not hitherto made a name for himself in Europe, he remained for several years in the capital of France—the heart and pulse of capricious continental fashion— unknown and unappreciated. Franz was a Styrian by birth, and, at the time of the event to be presently described, he was a young man considerably under thirty. A philosopher and a dreamer by nature, imbued with all the mystic oddities of true genius, he reminded one of some of the heroes in Hoffmann’s Contes Fantastiques. His earlier existence had been a very unusual, in fact, quite an eccentric one, and its history must be briefly told—for the better understanding of the present story. Born of very pious country people, in a quiet burg among the Styrian Alps; nursed “by the native gnomes who watched over his cradle”; growing up in the weird atmosphere of the ghouls and vampires who play such a prominent part in the household of every Styrian and Slavonian in Southern Austria; educated later, as a student, in the shadow of the old Rhenish castles of Germany; Franz from his childhood had passed through every emotional stage on the plane of the so-called “supernatural.” He had also studied at one the the “occult arts” with an enthusiastic disciple of Paracelsus and Khunrath; alchemy had few theoretical secrets for him; and he had dabbled in “ceremonial magic” and “sorcery” with some Hungarian Tziganes. -

HUNGARIAN STUDIES 11. No. 1. Nemzetközi Magyar Filológiai
LUGOSI IN HOLLYWOOD: A HUNGARIAN ACTOR'S RISE AND FALL AS A MOVIE STAR KEVIN E. KELLY Gallipolis Daily Tribune, Gallipolis, Ohio, U.S.A. Béla Lugosi, the actor most identified with the role of Count Dracula, the Transylvanian vampire immortalized in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula and in countless stage and screen adaptations, fled Hungary in 1919 to escape almost certain punishment and perhaps death for his brief and somewhat naïve involvement with the socialist movement that swept the country immediately after World War I. He left Europe two years later to seek the promise of a stage career and wealth offered in the United States. Fame and fortune he did find in the late 1920s with his portrayal of Dracula in the Broadway production of the popular Hamilton Deane-John L. Balderston version of the Stoker novel, and his star rose even further when he starred in the 1931 Hollywood film drawn from the novel and the play. Unfortunately, it would be the pinnacle of his professional career, and his stardom in the American film capital, would be brief. Years of roles in atrocious films and the ever-present shadow of Dracula would follow, culminating in near-unemploya- bility in the years preceding his death in 1956. While a number of Lugosi's countrymen, such as Paul Lukas and Victor Varconi, also emigrated to Hollywood and at first received starring roles as suave Continental types, they were eventually committed to character roles for the rest of their careers. Lugosi, however found to his everlasting regret that Dracula put him in a particular niche - as a star of horror films, with the resultant typecasting barring him from the varied roles that Lukas, for example, would enjoy as a supporting player for several decades. -
Course Descriptions
Course Information: Fall 2013 English 200+, Graduate Seminars ENG 0290-01 Graduate Seminar: Pro-Seminar Haber, J This course is required of all second-year students who entered without an M.A.; other English graduate students may audit individual classes, but they may not register for the course. Students will meet with a different member of the faculty every other week for an hour to discuss important topics in the areas of professionalization, pedagogy, and intellectual currents in our discipline. ENG 0291-01 Graduate Seminar: American Moderns Takayoshi, I The first three decades of the twentieth century saw the modernization of American literary culture. This process responded to ongoing transformations in society including urbanization, changes in sexual mores, gender relation, and race relation, America's deepening integration into the world system, and the mechanization and industrialization of American life in general. It was, however, also necessitated by more diffused changes in the ideological order, changes in the sense of time, space, and the self. Combined, all these changes made it imperative for American moderns to craft new techniques to render the lived experience of the American people as a modernizing nation. This seminar seeks to capture this development at its center, that is, at its linguistic level. How, across all major genres, was a new language invented and propagated—a complex of new tones, voices, textures, perspectives, and other compositional devices equal to the task of keeping literature relevant, meaningful, and useful in modern times? The seminar focuses on a generation of writers who were most directly responsible for bringing the literary language up to date, a variety of key players in American literary culture who were born, roughly, in the 1890s.
