Corruption as Shared Culpability: Religion, Family, and Society in Andrey Zvyagintsev's Leviathan (2014) Abstract This article engages in close analysis of how Andrey Zvyagintsev depicts corruption and its various manifestations: moral, familial, societal, and institutional, in Leviathan (Leviafan, 2014). While other post- Soviet films address the problem of prevalent corruption in Russia, Zvyagintsev’s work is the first ot provoke strong public reactions, not only from government and Russian Orthodox Church officials, but also from Orthodox and political activist groups. The film demonstrates that the instances of legal and moral failings in one aspect of existence are a sign of a much deeper and wider-ranging problem that affects all other spheres of human experience.

  • 50 Caliber–Danger and Legality of 50 Caliber Rifles,” Dateline NBC, June 19, 2005
CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER NATIONAL SECURITY EXPERTS WARN ABOUT THE DANGER OF UNRESTRICTED SALES OF 50 CALIBER ANTI-ARMOR SNIPER RIFLES TO CIVILIANS Violence Policy Center About the Cover Photo The cover shows a Barrett 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifle mounted on a “pintle” or “soft” mount, which is mounted in turn on a tripod. The mount reduces the effect of recoil, improves accuracy, and facilitates movement through vertical and horizontal dimensions, thus making it easier, for example, to engage moving targets. The Ponderosa Sports & Mercantile, Inc. (Horseshoe Bend, Idaho) Internet web site from which this photograph was taken advises the visitor: Many non-residents store firearms in Idaho. It is the buyers [SIC] sole responsibility to determine whether the firearm can legally be taken home. Ponderosa Sports has no knowledge of your city, county or state laws. For example - many kalifornia [sic] residents have purchased the Barrett m82 .50 BMG above. That rifle is illegal for them to take home. They can however purchase it and store it in Boise or Nevada.1 The operation of a pintle mount is fairly easy to understand by visual inspection. Here, for example, is one that Barrett sells for its 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifles. Barrett soft, or pintle, mount for 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifles. Tripods, often combined with pintle mounts, also aid in aiming heavy sniper rifles, as is evident from the following illustration. LAR Grizzly 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifle mounted on tripod. • Donor Bulletin 2 Caught in a Blessed Circle
2019 Donor Bulletin 2 Caught in a Blessed Circle Dear Friends, I recently met with a long-time seminary supporter. As we visited together, enjoying steaming cups of coffee on a frigid January morning, I asked him this question: “What inspires you to be so very generous? Why are you so generous?” “No one has ever asked me that before,” he responded. He sat back, and remained quiet for a few moments - then, he leaned toward me, fixing his gaze intently on mine, his elbows on his knees. The words were slow and deliberate. “Because I’m thankful to God. I’m grateful.” Gratitude inspires generosity, and generosity, in turn, inspires gratitude. It’s a blessed circle. We are grateful for your generosity, and inspired, too. Thank you so much for your continued support, patience, and prayers: all of the ways that you increase hope in and throughout the United Lutheran Seminary community. Your partnership, faith, and love in the shared ministry of theological education provides for the future of the Church. Over the past calendar year, we have had many blessings and opportunities arise for the seminary: • Our student body has increased to over 300 students; • We have been able to bring on a new Biblical Studies professor, Dr. Crystal Hall; • Different learning formats allow our students to learn in a variety of ways through distributed learning, online classes, and hybrid classrooms; • We have expanded continuing education opportunities for our lay and rostered leaders; • We continue to provide a thorough and comprehensive education, giving graduates the tools necessary to lead in a variety of ways; • The Urban Theological Institute now has 27 degree students and 43 certificate students; • Student borrowing has decreased to 23%: less than a quarter of our students take out loans! • A bequest of $30 million given toward student scholarships and one faculty chair will ensure that our support of students can continue and grow.

WWW.LUTHERLYN.COMWWW.LUTHERLYN.COM LUTHERLYN’S CORE AREAS OF MINISTRY Exciting news: All 5 core areas of ministry experienced growth in 2018! Adventure Summer Camp Environmental Retreats Equestrian Education 2018 ALL STAFF REUNION More than 150 “staffers” and their families donned their vintage Lutherlyn tee’s, hats, and headbands and came to Lutherlyn for the 70th anniversary All Staff Reunion! We reminisced while enjoying classic camp activities like hay rides, crafts, canoeing, ropes course, swimming, and a cookout dinner. We worshipped together in the amphitheater and had a great time at campfire by Lower Lake. As a special reminder of our history, Rev. Sam Shaulis’ daughter, Betty Sue, lit the fire while reading “Kneel Always When You Light a Fire,” just as her father had done many times during his tenure at Lutherlyn. It was a fun and special day; we can’t wait to do it again! If you served on staff but missed the reunion in 2018, don’t worry, we’ll celebrate Lutherlyn’s 75th anniversary in 2023 with another All Staff Reunion. We need your help to find more staffers! As we planned 2018's All Staff Reunion, we received a lot of questions about whose information we do (or do not) have. Our current Kneel always when you light a fire. Kneel reverently and thankful be to God for His unfailing database does not contain any information from charity. And on the ascending flame inspire a prayer of thankfulness for this sweet gift of warmth old payroll records, staff directories, or previous and light; for here, indeed, is sacrifice for your delight.

  • Agential Risks: a Comprehensive Introduction
A peer-reviewed electronic journal published by the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies ISSN 1541-0099 26(2) – August 2016 Agential Risks: A Comprehensive Introduction Phil Torres X-Risks Institute [email protected] Journal of Evolution and Technology - Vol. 26 Issue 2 – August 2016 - pgs 31-47 Abstract The greatest existential threats to humanity stem from increasingly powerful advanced technolo- gies. Yet the “risk potential” of such tools can only be realized when coupled with a suitable agent who, through error or terror, could use the tool to bring about an existential catastrophe. While the existential risk literature has provided many accounts of how advanced technologies might be misused and abused to cause unprecedented harm, no scholar has yet explored the other half of the agent-tool coupling, namely the agent. This paper aims to correct this failure by offer- ing a comprehensive overview of what we could call “agential riskology.” Only by studying the unique properties of different agential risk types can one acquire an accurate picture of the exis- tential danger before us. 1. A new subfield The field of existential risk studies, or existential riskology, can be traced back to a 1996 book by the phi- losopher John Leslie.1 In the early 2000s, the field emerged as a more formal discipline of active scholar- ship, led primarily by transhumanists (Bostrom 2005). Numerous institutions dedicated to understanding the greatest threats to our collective future have since been founded, such as the Future of Life Institute, the Centre for the Study of Existential Risks (Cambridge), and the Future of Humanity Institute (Oxford).
