Corruption as Shared Culpability: Religion, Family, and Society in Andrey Zvyagintsev's Leviathan (2014) Abstract This article engages in close analysis of how Andrey Zvyagintsev depicts corruption and its various manifestations: moral, familial, societal, and institutional, in Leviathan (Leviafan, 2014). While other post- Soviet films address the problem of prevalent corruption in Russia, Zvyagintsev’s work is the first ot provoke strong public reactions, not only from government and Russian Orthodox Church officials, but also from Orthodox and political activist groups. The film demonstrates that the instances of legal and moral failings in one aspect of existence are a sign of a much deeper and wider-ranging problem that affects all other spheres of human experience.

  • 50 Caliber–Danger and Legality of 50 Caliber Rifles,” Dateline NBC, June 19, 2005
CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER NATIONAL SECURITY EXPERTS WARN ABOUT THE DANGER OF UNRESTRICTED SALES OF 50 CALIBER ANTI-ARMOR SNIPER RIFLES TO CIVILIANS Violence Policy Center About the Cover Photo The cover shows a Barrett 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifle mounted on a “pintle” or “soft” mount, which is mounted in turn on a tripod. The mount reduces the effect of recoil, improves accuracy, and facilitates movement through vertical and horizontal dimensions, thus making it easier, for example, to engage moving targets. The Ponderosa Sports & Mercantile, Inc. (Horseshoe Bend, Idaho) Internet web site from which this photograph was taken advises the visitor: Many non-residents store firearms in Idaho. It is the buyers [SIC] sole responsibility to determine whether the firearm can legally be taken home. Ponderosa Sports has no knowledge of your city, county or state laws. For example - many kalifornia [sic] residents have purchased the Barrett m82 .50 BMG above. That rifle is illegal for them to take home. They can however purchase it and store it in Boise or Nevada.1 The operation of a pintle mount is fairly easy to understand by visual inspection. Here, for example, is one that Barrett sells for its 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifles. Barrett soft, or pintle, mount for 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifles. Tripods, often combined with pintle mounts, also aid in aiming heavy sniper rifles, as is evident from the following illustration. LAR Grizzly 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifle mounted on tripod. • Agential Risks: a Comprehensive Introduction
A peer-reviewed electronic journal published by the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies ISSN 1541-0099 26(2) – August 2016 Agential Risks: A Comprehensive Introduction Phil Torres X-Risks Institute [email protected] Journal of Evolution and Technology - Vol. 26 Issue 2 – August 2016 - pgs 31-47 Abstract The greatest existential threats to humanity stem from increasingly powerful advanced technolo- gies. Yet the “risk potential” of such tools can only be realized when coupled with a suitable agent who, through error or terror, could use the tool to bring about an existential catastrophe. While the existential risk literature has provided many accounts of how advanced technologies might be misused and abused to cause unprecedented harm, no scholar has yet explored the other half of the agent-tool coupling, namely the agent. This paper aims to correct this failure by offer- ing a comprehensive overview of what we could call “agential riskology.” Only by studying the unique properties of different agential risk types can one acquire an accurate picture of the exis- tential danger before us. 1. A new subfield The field of existential risk studies, or existential riskology, can be traced back to a 1996 book by the phi- losopher John Leslie.1 In the early 2000s, the field emerged as a more formal discipline of active scholar- ship, led primarily by transhumanists (Bostrom 2005). Numerous institutions dedicated to understanding the greatest threats to our collective future have since been founded, such as the Future of Life Institute, the Centre for the Study of Existential Risks (Cambridge), and the Future of Humanity Institute (Oxford).

  • Man Charged in Deputy Ambush Scrawled Extremist 'Boogaloo' Phrases in Blood
U.S. news Man charged in deputy ambush scrawled extremist 'Boogaloo' phrases in blood Steven Carrillo, accused of killing a sheriff's deputy in Santa Cruz County, California, wrote the words on the hood of a car, prosecutors said June 11, 2020, 9:04 PM EDT By Brandy Zadrozny, Ben Collins and Andrew Blankstein Steven Carrillo, a California man who was charged with murder after he ambushed two Santa Cruz County deputies, scrawled phrases tied to an online far-right extremist movement in blood on a car shortly before he was detained. Carrillo killed Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, critically injured another deputy and threw pipe bombs at police on June 6th, Santa Cruz District Attorney Jeffrey S. Rosell alleged on Thursday. Before he was apprehended, Carrillo scrawled the word “boog” and “I became unreasonable” in blood on the hood of a car. “Boog” is short for boogaloo, a far-right anti-government movement that began on the extremist site 4chan and aims to start a second American civil war. Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller.Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office The phrase “I became unreasonable” has become a meme in public Boogaloo communities on Facebook, which discuss weapons and fantasize about a second civil war. One recent meme on Facebook shows a man holding a Boogaloo flag at a protest, along with the phrase “Become unreasonable.” “I became unreasonable” is a reference to a quote written by Marvin Heemeyer, an anti-government extremist who bulldozed 13 buildings in Granby, Colorado, in retribution for a zoning dispute. Heemeyer killed himself after the rampage, which occurred on June 4, 2004, almost 16 years to the day of Carrillo’s attack.

  • White Jihad: How to Prevent Right-Wing Extremists from Exploiting the Internet
JULY 2020 | issUe 11 Strategic Security Analysis White Jihad: How to Prevent Right-Wing Extremists from Exploiting the Internet Christina Schori Liang and Matthew John Cross Photo: Anthony Crider Anthony Photo: www.gcsp.ch STRATEGIC SECURITY ANALYSIS WHITE JIHAD: HOW TO PREVENT RIGHT-WING EXTREMISTS FROM EXPLOITING THE INTERNET Key Points • The rise of right-wing extremists (RWEs) in the West has been neglected in the global battle against terrorism until recent high-profile attacks. • Copycat terrorism is becoming the new modus operandi of nation- based, lone wolf extremists who are inspired by previous terrorist attacks and leave instructions for others to follow, refreshing the cycle of violence. • RWEs are profiting from the global disruption brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic by promoting conspiracy theories, racism and plotting large-scale violence to start a civil war or a ‘race war’ as seen during the ongoing protests. • RWEs have created an effective strategy that uses several off and online tools to help carry out their operations and recruit new members. • The internet has become the most important tool of RWEs to spread propaganda, plan events, recruit, finance and communicate. It provides unparalleled opportunities to reach broader audiences with subversive exposure. • RWEs are effective at subversive exposure: infiltrating non-extremist sites and skirting moderation efforts, rendering conventional online strategies ineffective. • Counter-narrative programmes to explicitly deconstruct and delegitimise propaganda may be the best way forward in breaking down RWE networks and influence. About the Authors Dr. Christina Schori Liang is Head of Terrorism and PVE at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP).
