Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections Northwestern University Libraries Dublin Gate Theatre Archive The Dublin Gate Theatre Archive, 1928 - 1979 History: The Dublin Gate Theatre was founded by Hilton Edwards (1903-1982) and Micheál MacLiammóir (1899-1978), two Englishmen who had met touring in Ireland with Anew McMaster's acting company. Edwards was a singer and established Shakespearian actor, and MacLiammóir, actually born Alfred Michael Willmore, had been a noted child actor, then a graphic artist, student of Gaelic, and enthusiast of Celtic culture. Taking their company’s name from Peter Godfrey’s Gate Theatre Studio in London, the young actors' goal was to produce and re-interpret world drama in Dublin, classic and contemporary, providing a new kind of theatre in addition to the established Abbey and its purely Irish plays. Beginning in 1928 in the Peacock Theatre for two seasons, and then in the theatre of the eighteenth century Rotunda Buildings, the two founders, with Edwards as actor, producer and lighting expert, and MacLiammóir as star, costume and scenery designer, along with their supporting board of directors, gave Dublin, and other cities when touring, a long and eclectic list of plays. The Dublin Gate Theatre produced, with their imaginative and innovative style, over 400 different works from Sophocles, Shakespeare, Congreve, Chekhov, Ibsen, O’Neill, Wilde, Shaw, Yeats and many others. They also introduced plays from younger Irish playwrights such as Denis Johnston, Mary Manning, Maura Laverty, Brian Friel, Fr. Desmond Forristal and Micheál MacLiammóir himself. Until his death early in 1978, the year of the Gate’s 50th Anniversary, MacLiammóir wrote, as well as acted and designed for the Gate, plays, revues and three one-man shows, and translated and adapted those of other authors.

Both were of huge assistance throughout the whole process. Martin was of great help in advising on international sporting splits, and inputting on the focus, outputs, structure and style of the thesis. Mike’s vast knowledge of Irish history and sporting history, and his ability to see history through many different perspectives were instrumental in shaping the thesis as far more than a sports history one. It was through conversations with Mike that the concept of looking at partition from many different viewpoints arose. I would like to thank Professor Oliver Rafferty SJ from Boston College for sharing his research on the Catholic Church, Dr Dónal McAnallen for sharing his research on the GAA and Dr Tom Hunt for sharing his research on athletics and cycling.

  • Steiner Waldorf Education and the Irish Primary Curriculum: a Time of Opportunity
Steiner Waldorf Education and the Irish Primary Curriculum: A Time of Opportunity By Jonathan Angus At The Institute of Technology Sligo Supervised by Doireann O’Connor A Thesis Submitted to the Higher Education and Training Awards Council for the Award of Masters of Arts July 2011 1 Abstract The object of this research was to study the implications of Steiner Waldorf pedagogy delivered in National Schools, and to consider both its viability and usefulness. This research used both qualitative and quantitative methods of primary and secondary research. A review was carried out of the literature of the Waldorf movement internationally and specific to Ireland. A history of the Waldorf movement in Ireland, as well as a brief overview of the history of Irish publicly funded education, were both created from published literature, schools' records, and websites. Interviews were conducted with all of the full time teachers at both of the temporarily recognised Steiner National Schools, Mol an Oige and Raheen Wood. Data was compiled that showed a significant drop in the Steiner Waldorf-specific background and training of newly hired teachers at the two schools over the three years since recognition, resulting today in the majority of teachers lacking any previous Steiner Waldorf training. In fulfilling this objective, it was found that the value system of Steiner schools can be a useful addition to the options created for the families of Ireland. The general aims of the Primary School Curriculum were found to be in complete accord with those of the Steiner Waldorf approach, and multiple aspects of Waldorf pedagogy were identified which can be employed to deliver the curriculum in a vibrant and creative way.

  • Archaeology & Cultural Heritage
Chapter 4: Archaeology & Cultural Heritage Golf Lane SHD Environmental Impact Assessment Report Chapter 4 – Archaeology and Cultural Heritage 4.0 ARCHAEOLOGY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE 4.1 INTRODUCTION 4.1.1 GENERAL The following chapter details a pre-planning archaeological assessment undertaken for a proposed residential development at Golf Lane, Glenamuck Road in Carrickmines Great, Dublin 18 (Figure 4.1, ITM 721600, 723950). This assessment has been carried out to ascertain the potential impact of the proposed development on the archaeological and historical resource that may exist within the area. The assessment was undertaken by Maeve Tobin and Jacqui Anderson of IAC Archaeology. The site partially lies within the zone of notification for Carrickmines Castle and associated features (DU026-005), a National Monument in local authority ownership. Archaeological testing was carried out within this part of site in 2007, although no archaeology was found at this time (Ministerial Consent C207, Registration No. E003332). Pre- planning consultation with the NMS noted that further testing should be carried out to inform this impact assessment; however, the current site conditions meant that this is not currently feasible (Figure 4.4). Detailed relating to all recorded monuments in the study area are included in Appendix 4.1. The archaeological assessment involved a detailed study of the archaeological and historical background of the proposed development site and the surrounding area. This included information from the Record of Monuments and Places of County Dublin, the topographical files within the National Museum and all available cartographic and documentary sources for the area. A field inspection has also been carried out with the aim to identify any previously unrecorded features of archaeological or historical interest.

It aims to investigate playwriting and theatre-making in the Republic of Ireland during the 1980s. Theatre’s response to failures of the Irish state, to the civil war in Northern Ireland, and to feminist and working-class concerns are explored in this thesis; it is as much an exploration of the 1980s as it is of plays and playwrights during the decade. As identified by a literature review, scholarly and critical attention during the 1980s was drawn towards Northern Ireland where playwrights were engaging directly with the conflict in Northern Ireland. This means that proportionally the work of many playwrights in the Republic remains unexamined and unpublished.

Bowen A Thesis Submitted to the Department of History California State University Bakersfield In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in History May 2015 Copyright By Melissa S. Bowen 2015 Acknowledgments I am incredibly grateful for the encouragement and support of Cal State Bakersfield’s History Department faculty, who as a group worked closely with me in preparing me for this fruitful endeavor. I am most grateful to my advisor, Cliona Murphy, whose positive enthusiasm, never- ending generosity, and infinite wisdom on Irish History made this project worthwhile and enjoyable. I would not have been able to put as much primary research into this project as I did without the generous scholarship awarded to me by Cal State Bakersfield’s GRASP office, which allowed me to travel to Ireland and study Beatrice Elvery’s work first hand. I am also grateful to the scholars and professionals who helped me with my research such as Dr. Stephanie Rains, Dr. Nicola Gordon Bowe, and Rector John Tanner. Lastly, my research would not nearly have been as extensive if it were not for my hosts while in Ireland, Brian Murphy, Miriam O’Brien, and Angela Lawlor, who all welcomed me into their homes, filled me with delicious Irish food, and guided me throughout the country during my entire trip.
