Davis was most politically active during the late 1960s through the 1970s and was associated with the Communist Party USA, the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party. Prisoner rights have been among her continuing interests; she is the founder of 'Critical Resistance', an organization working to abolish the prison-industrial complex. She is presently a retired professor with the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz and is the former director of the university's Feminist Studies department. Her research interests are in feminism, African American studies, critical theory, Marxism, popular music and social consciousness, and the philosophy and history of punishment and prisons. Her membership in the Communist Party led to Ronald Reagan's request in 1969 to have her barred from teaching at any university in the State of California. She was tried and acquitted of suspected involvement in the Soledad brothers' August 1970 abduction and murder of Judge Harold Haley in Marin County, California. She... Baptista3 287 ABSTRAcT The first part of this paper presents the thoughts of black women regarding feminism, taking into con- sideration that the fight for black and lesbian visibility is closely linked to the (re)formulation of inter- sectional feminism, carried out by intellectual black women. Later on, we attempt to discuss the invisibility of the black LGBT community, especially the absence of black lesbian women in the Por- tuguese-speaking context. It is believed that, with further theoretical study on black lesbianism, it is possible to think about elaborating new concepts for lesbian, feminist, post-colonial and lusophone theories and, most importantly, for the field of Cultural Studies. kEywORDS Black lesbianism; identity; invisibility; black women’s thoughts; post-colonial thinking. Black women’s thoughts and intersectionalities Issues like the right to vote, to work, to maternity, of body integrity, the fight against domestic violence, and others, have brought important advances in the improvement of quality of life for many women, mainly for heterosexual white women. Even though numer- ous feminist movements have come up, throughout the centuries, dealing with the protec- tion of human rights, women’s participation in politics, specific legislation for that subordinate group, neither of these social movements was able to reflect on the situation of black lesbians. Besides reflecting on the purposeful neglect of lesbian identities, this paper also takes into account the issue of lesbian’s color/race which becomes an added focus of discrimination.

Many of these women, including Alice Walker, Barbara Smith, Michele Wallace, bell hooks, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Angela Davis, and Johnnetta Cole, remain enormously influential and continue to organize, write, teach, and produce art and scholarship. The late Audre Lorde, the “black, lesbian, warrior, poet, mother” who integrally claimed and celebrated all of her differences is arguably one of the world’s most revered and cited Black feminist theorists in this the 86th anniversary of her birth. Intergenerational Black feminists—and people of all colors throughout the world— study, celebrate, and teach her words and ideas. Throughout this study, I consider how Lorde’s ideas are a touchstone for intergenerational Black feminist activism and cultural production in the new millennium. My research lies at the intersection of African American feminism, cultural studies, Women of Color feminisms, and Black Queer Studies.

The meme, though, was misleading. It was true that 94 percent of Black women who voted cast their ballot for Clinton, but those voters represented 64 percent of all eligible Black women. Even though this was a large voter turnout, it represented a 6 percent drop in Black women’s historically high turnout in 2012, when Barack Obama was on the ballot.

When considering the history of feminism in terms of decades, the 1970s are often idealized as feminism’s zenith, while the 1980s and 1990s are marred by feminist in-fighting, rising conservatism on the national stage, and the culture wars. Clare Hemmings refers to this version of the history of feminism as a “loss” narrative which unwittingly serves those who would mark feminism as over.1 This dissertation brings together performances that disrupt this loss narrative by advancing ideas that have been associated with 1970s lesbian feminism into the 1980s and 1990s, or by emphasizing common goals over divisive issues. These performances range from plays such as Shirlene Holmes’s A Lady and a Woman to museum installations such 1 .
