The Digital Afterlives of This Bridge Called My Back: Woman of Color Feminism, Digital Labor, and Networked Pedagogy Cassius
American Literature Cassius The Digital Afterlives Adair of This Bridge Called My Back: and Woman of Color Feminism, Digital Labor, Lisa and Networked Pedagogy Nakamura Abstract This article traces the publication history of the canonical woman of color feminist anthology This Bridge Called My Back through its official and unofficial editions as it has migrated from licensed paper to PDF format. The digital edition that circulated on the social blogging platform Tumblr.com and other informal social networks constitutes a new and impor- tant form of versioning that reaches different audiences and opens up new pedagogical opportu- nities. Though separated by decades, Tumblr and This Bridge both represent vernacular pedagogy networks that value open access and have operated in opposition to hierarchically controlled con- tent distribution and educational systems. Both analog and digital forms of open-access woman of color pedagogy promote the free circulation of knowledge and call attention to the literary and social labor of networked marginalized readers and writers who produce it, at once urging new considerations of academic labor and modeling alternatives to neoliberal university systems. Perhaps this is not surprising: published in 1981 by the collec- tively run woman of color press Kitchen Table, This Bridge is now countercultural canon, one of many radical interventions into white feminist theory that now undergirds much intersectional work on gender, race, class, and homophobia. -

Trinity College Digital Repository, Hartford, CT. https://digitalrepository.trincoll.edu/trinitypapers/74 Analyzing the Combahee River Collective as a Social Movement Alexander Gnassi Sociological analysis of social movements has progressed dialectically, each new theory building off and in contrast to what previously existed, whilst what previously existed is modified as newer theories bring up relevant new ideas. Three theories—Collective Behavior Theory (CB), Resource Mobilization Theory (RMT), and Political Process Theory (PPT)—best illustrate this dialectical relationship through their many commonalities and clear departures from one another (Edwards 2017). Across the theories, four general elements of social movements are proffered: social movements are collective organized efforts at social change, they are durable over a period of time and engage with a powerful opponent on a conflictual issue, members of a social movement share a collective identity, and social movements utilize protest as a mechanism to achieve their goals (Edwards 2017). All three theories identify social problems as a necessary element, though not a causal factor, of collective action, protest, and social movements. In general, contemporary conceptualizations of social movements are moving toward “a ‘rational’ understanding of what social movements are and how they operate” (Edwards 2017:8). -

Baptista3 287 ABSTRAcT The first part of this paper presents the thoughts of black women regarding feminism, taking into con- sideration that the fight for black and lesbian visibility is closely linked to the (re)formulation of inter- sectional feminism, carried out by intellectual black women. Later on, we attempt to discuss the invisibility of the black LGBT community, especially the absence of black lesbian women in the Por- tuguese-speaking context. It is believed that, with further theoretical study on black lesbianism, it is possible to think about elaborating new concepts for lesbian, feminist, post-colonial and lusophone theories and, most importantly, for the field of Cultural Studies. kEywORDS Black lesbianism; identity; invisibility; black women’s thoughts; post-colonial thinking. Black women’s thoughts and intersectionalities Issues like the right to vote, to work, to maternity, of body integrity, the fight against domestic violence, and others, have brought important advances in the improvement of quality of life for many women, mainly for heterosexual white women. Even though numer- ous feminist movements have come up, throughout the centuries, dealing with the protec- tion of human rights, women’s participation in politics, specific legislation for that subordinate group, neither of these social movements was able to reflect on the situation of black lesbians. Besides reflecting on the purposeful neglect of lesbian identities, this paper also takes into account the issue of lesbian’s color/race which becomes an added focus of discrimination. -

Alexis Pauline Gumbs from “We Can Learn to Mother Ourselves”: The Queer Survival of Black 1 Feminism Introduction (Part 1) 1979 ...as Black women, as Lesbians and feminists, there is no guarantee that our lives will ever be looked at with the kind of respect given to certain people from other races, sexes or classes. There is similarly no guarantee that we or our movement will survive... -“I am Not Meant to Be Alone and Without You Who Understand: Letters from Black Feminists 1972-1978” in Conditions Four, 1979 Living in Boston, we worked on CONDITIONS: FIVE this year under yet more stringent and draining circumstances. As we did all the things mentioned above, twelve Black women were being murdered in Boston’s Third World communities between January 29 and May 28, 1979. While we were working to create a place for celebration of Black women’s lives, our sisters were dying. -“Introduction” Conditions Five: The Black Women’s Issue, Barbara Smith and Lorraine Bethel Quiet as its kept, 1979 was an apocalyptic year. The world ended in small, significant and brutal ways. And another world was born. In 1968 Black Feminism had dared to name itself; by 1981 every Black feminist organization in the United States had fallen apart, but in 1979 enough was lost and enough was gained to shift the context through which Black feminism could survive. On November 19th 1979 Audre Lorde wrote in her journal “We have been sad long enough to make this earth either weep or grow fertile. I am an anachronism, a sport, like the bee that was never meant to fly. -

Harnois and Mosi Ifatunji (First submission August 2009; First published October 2010) Abstract In this paper we draw from black and multiracial feminist theories to argue that interpersonal racial discrimination should be understood as a potentially gendered phenomenon. While there are some discriminatory practices that are directed at both black men and black women, some forms of racial discrimination affect men more than women, and some affect women more than men. Still other forms may be gender-specific. Our review of existing literature shows that most survey research has utilized measures and models of racial discrimination that fail to account for these gender differences. Drawing on the 2001Á2003 National Survey of American Life (NSAL) we demonstrate the importance of gender for understanding and analysing interpersonal racial discrimination. We offer concrete ways for social researchers to centralize gender in their analyses. By doing so, we hope to advance the development of an intersectional approach to racial discrimination.
