BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE 15 Jim Brown Assistant Coach

He has seen it all. That's what people say about assis tant coach Jim Brown and his 22 years at Wright State University. He has been involved in every varsity game ever played at the university over 600 contests. Brown has seen the program play its games everywhere from small area gyms to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. He has seen the worst season and the best season in the Raider basketball history. Over 100 players have been through the basketball offices since that first tip-off in 1970 and Jim Brown has seen them all. Beginning in 1970, Brown spent two years as a part-time assistant under the first Raider coach, John Ross. Brown became the first full-time assistant coach in 1972. He helped guide the Raiders through all eight of their Division II regional tournament appearances and the national championship season. Brown grew up in the Dayton area, graduating from Belmont High School where he played one season for Ross. He captained the team as a senior, averaging 18 points per game and earning All-Dayton honors. Brown then attended the University of Dayton, where he played freshman basketball. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966 and began teaching in the Dayton area. He returned to Belmont where he taught and coached the freshman basketball team. He also taught at Fairview High School and Longfellow Middle School. Brown came to Wright State after completing a tour of duty with the United States Army. While assisting with the basketball team, he completed work on his Master of Education degree, which he received from Xavier University in 1970. Included in his duties as assistant coach is the coordination of the academic advising of players. He also coordinates the staff's recruiting efforts and has helped bring all eight Raider All Americans to Wright State. Brown coordinates the program's summer camps and is also the chair of the Wright State Athletic Hall of Fame committee. Jim and his wife, Rebecca, have two sons, Matthew, 18, and Anthony, 15, and live in Beavercreek, OH.

16 WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY Jack Butler Assistant Coach

Though he'll enter only his second year on Underhill's staff this year, Jack Butler can boast that this is his 20th season in collegiate coaching. Butler spent a year as the WSU athletic department's academic advisor before rejoining the coaching ranks last season. He previously was an assistant coach across town at the University of Dayton for 18 years before coming to Wright State. The Flyers earned three NCAA and five NIT postseason bids during his tenure there, and he became particularly adept in the recruiting wars. Among those he helped bring to Dayton were future NBA standouts Jim Paxson and Johnny Davis, as well as the league's Sedric Toney, Negele Knight and Roosevelt Chapman. Butler is very involved in the recruiting process with the Raiders, and helps monitor the players' academic progress. His college playing career began at Vincennes Junior College in Indiana, where he averaged 22.7 points per game over two seasons and set a single-game school scoring record (43). Butler finished his career at Western Kentucky, where Underhill was a graduate assistant coach at the time. He earned his B.A. degree in education/sociology from Western in 1966. Butler and his wife, Cynthia, reside in Trotwood, OH. The couple has three sons: Ryan, 11, and twins Tim and Travis, 7.

BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE 17 Jim Ehler Assistant Coach

Jim Ehler begins his fourth yearas a Raider assistant coach, but he is hardly a newcomer to the profession as he enters his 21st year in college basketball. Ehler came to Wright State after spending 17 years as an assistant at the University of Dayton, where he also worked in the office of Counseling Education Services. The personable coach competed in track at Miami of Ohio, where he earned a B.S. degree in health and physical education in 1950. He later earned a master's degree in education administration from the Oxford campus. Ehler is a graduate of Lanier (OH) High School, where he competed in basketball, track and cross country. He later coached at his alma mater, as well as at Versailles, Fairmont and Fairmont East high schools. He served as head basketball and track coach along with teaching biology. Before retiring from teaching in 1983, he was the athletic director of Fairmont East for 10 years. Still an active runner and physical fitness advocate, Ehler formed the Kettering Striders Track Club and was inducted into the Ohio Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987. He is also a popular motivational speaker in the Dayton area. Among Ehler's duties at Wright State will be scouting, recruiting, game preparation, daily practices and preseason conditioning. DLAYING PROFESSIONALLY

A pair of former Wright State University standouts have continued their basketball careers on the Division I professional level in Europe. Currently, Scott Benton, the school's all-time leader in career three point shooting percentage, is competing in Luxemburg while Rondey Robinson, Wright State's single-season rebounding champion, is practicing his trade in Denmark.
