The Wright State basketball program is not in a rebuilding phase, it is in a building phase. With the move to Division I just two seasons away, the Raiders hope to leave Division II status after having firmly established themselves as the most successful team during their last IO years in Division II. The Raiders have a good start on that claim. advancing to the regional tournament six times in the last eight years. They won the Division II national championship in 1983 and were a regional finalist last season. Having built a solid base as the most successful program in Division II. in two years Wright State will be able to move on to Division I. The 1985-86 team may add yet another cornerstone to the foundation of the basketball program. With the top eight players returning. including all five starters. the Raiders are hopeful of a top-ten ranking. - But the schedule. which includes homc-and­ - home contests with Kentucky Wesleyan and Southern Indiana. a pair of regional qualifiers last year. will challenge the veteran team. The Wright State athletic program has gained a national reputation in just a short amount of time. Entering its sixteenth year as a varsity program, not only has Wright State won the 1983 Division II national championship, the university has had six players earn All-America honors. The first player to receive national honors was Bob Grote, now an assistant coach with the Raiders. He was an Associated Press honorable mention All-America selection in 1975 and was selected again in 1976 after ·1eading Wright State to its first regional tournament appearance. In 1980, following Wright State's second consecutive trip to the regional tournament under coach Ralph Underhill, Roman Welch 1982-83 Division II National Championship Team: Sitting, T.C. Johnson, Steve Purcell, was a third-team All-America choice by Anthony Bias, Tom Holzapfel, Ga1)' Monroe, Andy Warner, Fred Moore, and Phil Benninger. Basketball Weekly. The next year. The campus also includes a Garden for the Senses and a 200-acre biological preserve. The University Library contains more than 367,000 bound volumes. It features an outstanding collection of Wright brothers' material and is one of two Ohio map depositories. The Raiders have played home basketball \ games in the Physical Education Building since 1973. The building is the center of the athletic facility complex and includes two gymnasia, a natatorium, a wrestling room, ', athletic offices, and other facilities necessary to support the athletic teams. Under the direction of its second athletic director. Dr. Michael J. Cusack, the university sponsors eight sports for men and seven for women. The men's basketball team has been the most successful program, winning the Division II national championship in 1983 and qualifying for the regional tournament six of the past seven years. In addition. the mcn·s and women's swim team and the wrestling squad placed in the top IO at the Division 11 national championships. The volleyball and baseball teams have also earned NCAA regional playoff bids.
