Usaha menghaluskan ini dikenal dengan nama eufemia atau eufemisme, sedangkan usaha untuk mengasarkan disebut dengan disfemia atau disfemisme. Disfemisme adalah istilah bahasa yang digunakan untuk memperkasar makna dari satuan leksikal agar terkesan negatif oleh pembaca dan pendengar. Hakikat pemakaian disfemisme adalah upaya menggantikan kata yang bernilai rasa positif atau netral dengan kata lain yang dinilai bernilai rasa kasar atau negatif (Masri, 2001: 72). Sesuai dengan pendapat Chaer (1995: 145) yang menyatakan bahwa disfemisme merupakan kebalikan dari eufemisme, yaitu usaha untuk mengganti kata yang maknanya halus atau bermakna biasa dengan kata yang maknanya kasar. Selain itu, Chaer (2007: 315) menambahkan disfemisme sengaja dilakukan untuk mencapai efek pembicaraan menjadi tegas. Hal ini secara otomatis akan mempengaruhi kelaziman pemakaian kata atau bentuk kebahasaan lainnya. Selain itu, pemakaian disfemisme mengakibatkan kecenderungan-kecenderungan tertentu bila dilihat dari nilai rasa, seperti terasa menyeramkan, mengerikan, menakutkan, menjijikkan, dan menguatkan (Masri, dkk., 2001: 72-74). Pada zaman sekarang ini pemakaian disfemisme sering ditemukan dalam media sosial untuk menyampaikan dan meluapkan rasa ketidaksenangan para netizen terhadap seseorang. Tujuan lain dari pemakaian disfemisme ini adalah untuk menunjukan rasa tidak suka dan hal negatif terhadap tindakan dan peristiwa yang terjadi.
