Curiosity is piqued when a weaving design is chosen. Calmness pervades as you thread and warp. Expectations rise when the first weft is thrown and satisfaction grows as the weaving progresses. For this book, Favorite Scandinavian Projects to Weave, we have selected 45 patterns from Vävmagasinet—the Scandinavian Weaving Magazine. Most of all, we wanted weavings that are easy to make and can be woven on a loom with four shafts and four treadles. We have used materials that are easy to find and fun to weave with. To make it easy for you to find a suitable weaving, there is an index at the end of the book where the projects are divided into categories according to the number of shafts and treadles. This book offers patterns for a wide array of furnishing textiles suitable for any style house. You can change the size and color of any of the blankets to go with a room’s décor and match the color of the table linens to your favorite china. Curtains woven in classic patterns such as huckaback and M’s and O’s are paired with modern panel curtains made with linen and paper. For the table we have selected both classic designs and weavings where you can “let loose” a little at the loom. For the decorative runner “Flowerbed” you can pick little flowers that don’t need any water to strew over the piece, on “Linen with Little Secrets” you can weave in gold hearts, silver stars, or small photos and, for the fanciful runners in linen and paper, you can decide how long the inlay should be. Our cherished hand towels deserve their own chapter. Generously sized towels in exciting patterns, such as the black and white hand towels with color effects or striped towels in warm yellow and orange tones, are practical and fine at the same time. Embroidery is an easy decorative touch for any kind of towel. It could be a heart and small flowers in cross stitch as on the “Little Heart” hand towel and the Linen Summer hand towels or roses in straight stitch on a small towel. You can create your own patterns and monograms by drawing them on graph paper. Behind every weaving in this book is an expert weaver. The weavers’ experience, imagination, and knowledge stimulate the continued development of weaving. With this book in hand and your own ideas, the path is cleared for you to create your own furnishing textiles for tomorrow’s linen closets and homes. So that you’ll get as much pleasure from caring for woven textiles as weaving and using them, the book’s final section offers tips on how to make handwoven textiles even lovelier over time. Tina Ignell NOTE: Throughout this book, yarn grist, indicated by meters per kilo, has not been translated into US yards per pounds. All other weights are listed in both metric and US terms. For reference, 1 meter=39¼ in and 1 kilo=2.2 pounds.
