Abstract. This study investigates the evolutionary history of a hyperdiverse clade, the ant subfamily Myrmicinae (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), based on analyses of a data matrix comprising 251 species and 11 nuclear gene fragments. Under both maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods of inference, we recover a robust phylogeny that reveals six major clades of Myrmicinae, here treated as newly defined tribes and occur- ring as a pectinate series: Myrmicini, Pogonomyrmecini trib.n., Stenammini, Solenop- sidini, Attini and Crematogastrini. Because we condense the former 25 myrmicine tribes into a new six-tribe scheme, membership in some tribes is now notably different, espe- cially regarding Attini. We demonstrate that the monotypic genus Ankylomyrma is nei- ther in the Myrmicinae nor even a member of the more inclusive formicoid clade – rather it is a poneroid ant, sister to the genus Tatuidris (Agroecomyrmecinae). -

The new genus Kempfi dris gen. nov. is described based on the workers of a single species, K. inusualis comb. nov., from Brazil, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Kempfi dris inusualis comb. nov. was originally described by Fernández (2007) and provisionally placed in Monomorium awaiting a better understanding of the internal relationships in Myrmicinae. Kempfi dris gen. nov. has a series of distinctive morphological characters including the mandibular confi guration, vestibulate propodeal spiracle, propodeal carinae, and cylindrical micro-pegs on the posteromedian portion of abdominal tergum VI and anteromedian portion of abdominal tergum VII. -

Checklist of ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Formicidae includes circa of 16.000 valid species names worldwide, with estimates exceed 20,000 species. Currently 16 subfamilies are described, and in the Neotropical region 14 of these are known, represented by over 4,000 species. We are presenting the checklist of Formicidae sampled in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, contemplated in recent surveys conducted in the Serra da Bodoquena, Pantanal, Brazilian Chaco, Aporé-Sucuriú complex, Serra do Amolar, and in a Semidecidual Forest of Dourados municipality. The data presented here refers at samples conducted between 2004 to 2012. The set of samples was not standardized for the respective areas due to the objectives of each study. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Diaphoromyrma sofiae, new genus and new species, is a Myrmicinae ant described from workers from the State of Bahia, Brazil. This taxon is characterized by the following traits: Antenna 9-segmented with 2-segmented club, trapezoidal promesonotum in dorsal view, propodeal spiracles situated on the propodeal edges, and the fourth abdominal sternite with a pair of rounded recurved anterolateral extensions which curve up onto the dorsal surface of the segment. Apparently this ant is close to the genera Allomerus and Diplomorium in the Solenopsidini, but its tribal attribution remains difficult because of the inadequate resolution of the phylogenetic relationships within the Myrmicinae.
