Government Reiltys ElIan Vannin The Council of Ministers Annual Report Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Memorials Committee .Duty 2017 The Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Piemorials Committee Foreword by the Hon Howard Quayle MHK, Chief Minister To: The Hon Stephen Rodan MLC, President of Tynwald and the Honourable Council and Keys in Tynwald assembled. In November 2007 Tynwald resolved that the Council of Ministers consider the establishment of a suitable body for the preservation of War Memorials in the Isle of Man. Subsequently in October 2008, following a report by a Working Group established by Council of Ministers to consider the matter, Tynwald gave approval to the formation of the Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Memorials Committee. I am pleased to lay the Annual Report before Tynwald from the Chair of the Committee. I would like to formally thank the members of the Committee for their interest and dedication shown in the preservation of Manx War Memorials and to especially acknowledge the outstanding voluntary contribution made by all the membership. This Committee plays a very important role in our community to ensure that all War Memorials on the Isle of Man are protected and preserved in good order for generations to come. The Committee continues to work closely with Manx National Heritage, the Church representatives and the Local Authorities to ensure that all memorials are recorded in the Register of Memorials. -

Manx Place-Names: an Ulster View
37 Manx Place-Names: an Ulster View Kay Muhr In this chapter I will discuss place-name connections between Ulster and Man, beginning with the early appearances of Man in Irish tradition and its association with the mythological realm of Emain Ablach, from the 6th to the I 3th century. 1 A good introduction to the link between Ulster and Manx place-names is to look at Speed's map of Man published in 1605.2 Although the map is much later than the beginning of place-names in the Isle of Man, it does reflect those place-names already well-established 400 years before our time. Moreover the gloriously exaggerated Manx-centric view, showing the island almost filling the Irish sea between Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, also allows the map to illustrate place-names from the coasts of these lands around. As an island visible from these coasts Man has been influenced by all of them. In Ireland there are Gaelic, Norse and English names - the latter now the dominant language in new place-names, though it was not so in the past. The Gaelic names include the port towns of Knok (now Carrick-) fergus, "Fergus' hill" or "rock", the rock clearly referring to the site of the medieval castle. In 13th-century Scotland Fergus was understood as the king whose migration introduced the Gaelic language. Further south, Dundalk "fort of the small sword" includes the element dun "hill-fort", one of three fortification names common in early Irish place-names, the others being rath "ring fort" and lios "enclosure". -

William Cleator, son of Stephen, was baptized in October, 1682, at Andreas. An unnamed female, daughter of Stephen, was baptized on the 27th of December, 1684, at Andreas. -

Government Circular No. 18/66. G.O. Reference No. T.29o2/2/16. Regulations for Tynwald 5th July, 1966 Tynwald to be held at St. John's on July 5th, will be the occasion for promulgating the Acts passed during the last session, and for transacting other business. At 10-45 a.m. His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor will arrive. His Excellency will inspect the Guard of Honour of the 1st Battalion, the Lancashire Fusiliers, drawn up on the fair-ground with the Band of the Battalion. His Excellency will place a wreath on the National War Memorial. Detachments from the Territorial Army, British Legion, British Legion (Women's Section), Joint Ex-Services Association, Sea, Army and Air Cadet Forces, Civil Defence Corps, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides will be in attendance. The general arrangements in connection with the Tynwald Ceremony will be as follows :— 1. A service will be held in the Royal Chapel of St. John's at II a.m. Those taking part in the ceremony would have the use of rooms in the Church Room, adjoining the Church for robing purposes. Road Traffic Regulation (Weight Restriction) Order 2020 Article 1 Statutory Document No. 2020/0126 c Road Traffic Regulation Act 1985 ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION (WEIGHT RESTRICTION) ORDER 2020 Made: 27 March 2020 Coming into Operation: 8 April 2020 The Department of Infrastructure, after complying with the requirements of paragraph 1 of Schedule 21 makes the following Order under section 1 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1985. 1 Title This Order is the Road Traffic Regulation (Weight Restriction) Order 2020. 2 Commencement This Order comes into operation on 8 April 2020. 3 Interpretation In this Order – “Department” means the Department of Infrastructure; “emergency services’ vehicle” means — (a) an ambulance, fire brigade vehicle or police vehicle during such time as the vehicle is in actual use for any emergency purpose; (b) a motor vehicle or trailer during such time as it is in actual use by any coastguard service provided by the Department for the purposes of giving aid to persons in danger or vessels in distress on or near the coast; or (c) a motor vehicle or trailer during such time as it is in actual use for civil defence or bomb disposal purposes; and “motor vehicle” has the meaning given by section 65 of the Road Traffic Act 1985. 1 As required by section 4A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1985. c SD No.2020/0126 Page 1 Article 4 Road Traffic Regulation (Weight Restriction) Order 2020 4 Weight restriction A person must not cause or permit a motor vehicle to proceed on a road specified in the Schedule if the weight of the vehicle, whether laden or unladen, exceeds 3.5 tonnes. -

The Earliest Records of the Lace Family of Kerrowdhoo - Isle of Man The following information comes from research initiated by William Hodgkinson, who also descends from the Kerrowdhoo Lace family. He engaged a noted Manx genealogist to conduct the investigations and has been very generous in sharing his work with others. From “The Family if Arthur Hodgkinson and Doris Catherine Lace” by William Arthur Hodgkinson. The name Lace may belong to pre-christian times and has been likened to a pebble worn down so much that there is nothing but the core left. It's oldest form was MacGuilleychass or MacGilhacosse, which translated from the Manx means "son of a curley-haired youth." Other variations were MacGilhaws, MacGilhast, MacYlhast, McElhast. Finally, it became Laes, Leece and Lace. The Principal centers of the families were in the treens(*Note 1) of Ballaseyr and Guilcagh in the Parish of Kirk Andreas, and Glendown, Ballamin and Cranstal in the adjoining Parish of Kirk Bride. For over 300 years "Lace Kerrowdhoo" was a fixed point in Bride affairs, the list beginning with "Thomas MacGilhast (Lace) and mother" mentioned in a 1515 document from the reign of Henry VIII progressing through a series of Donalds, Williams and Daniels to end with another Thomas Lace in the late nineteenth century. The Parish of Kirk Bride occupies the northern nine square miles or so of the island, the extreme northern portion of which is known as the Ayre Barrens. It is dedicated to St. Bridget, the Abbess of Kildare in Ireland. Kerrowdhoo farmhouse, on the shore road to Portcranstal is about one mile and one-quarter from the village of Bride and one mile and one-half due south of the Point of Ayre, the northernmost point of the island. -
London Manx Society Who Was Given the Honour of Formally Opening the Festival
NEWSLETTER Summer 2016 Editor – Douglas Barr-Hamilton Annual lunch Thirty-six members and guests of the Society assembled for our annual lunch at the traditional venue in Southampton Row on Saturday, 7th May and thoroughly enjoyed our first social gathering of the year. We dined on leek and potato soup, roasted supreme of chicken and lemon crème brulée while catching up on one other's news. Having toasted the Lord of Mann, sung the Manx National Anthem and toasted the guests and the land of our birth, the guest of honour, Edmund Southworth, director of Manx National Heritage brought us up to date with the organisation's work on the Island in an entertaining speech and kindly answered a number of topical questions. Other guests present were Mrs Suzanne Richardson, Mrs Josie Thacker, Peter Nash and Rev. Justin White. Members who attended were Anne and Nick Alexander, Voirry and Robin Carr, Bryan and Sheila Corrin, Pam and Mike Fiddik, Colin and Sheila Gill, Sally and Peter Miller, Melodie and Harry Waddingham, Sam and Mary Weller, Jim and Sue Wood, Douglas Barr-Hamilton, Margaret Brady, Stewart Christian, Derek Costain, Rose Fowler, Maron Honeyborne, Alastair Kneale, Carol Radcliffe, Margaret Robertson, Maisie Sell, Elizabeth Watson and Mary West. 2 The outgoing president, Alastair Kneale, after three years in the post, handed over to his successor Bryan Corrin from Beckenham. Bryan is Emeritus Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College, London and a long-time member of the Society. He is a descendant of Richard Corrin of Castletown and Catherine Creer of St Anne’s (presumably Santon) who were married at Braddan in 1839, immediately prior to leaving the island to settle in Liverpool.
