ParentsGuide | 17 Temperament and that Fiery Determination

By Jincy Dean

Do you ever wonder why children do what they do? Does it surprise you that your child reacts differently to the same situa- tion than another child? And isn’t it amazing that children with the same parents can be so different?!

Each person sees and responds to the world in a unique way. Many specialists from philosophers to psychologists have spent hundreds of years trying to understand the most complex riddle imaginable ~ the human being.

How about the fiery determined self-willed child? There are some children who always want to have their own way. They push and pull and do everything in their power to have things be the way they want it to be. Hence the label strong-willed chil- dren! As infants they may scream and yell when they are not held constantly. Some children seem to control their parents from the very beginning. The parents are not in charge of the home, the children are.

18 | ParentsGuideLV.com | June 2010 Torino Ranch to Host Summer Camps for Critically Ill Children

The Torino Foundation will once again host its annual summer camps for kids at Torino Ranch. Located in the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area, approximately 30 miles west of Las Vegas, the Ranch is home to several summer camp programs for critically ill and at-risk children.

Torino Ranch is hosting six non-profit organization camp pro- grams that focus on the care and wellbeing of Southern Nevada children. Each three- to five-day camp program is designed to let children leave behind the worries of their regimented treatments and diagnoses, and embrace the joys of summer camp in a medi- cally supervised, safe and loving environment.

Each camp offers all of the activi- ties typically associated with summer camp – arts and crafts, drama, dance lessons, talent shows and other activi- ties – along with the opportunity to enjoy water activities in the spring-fed lake, outdoor activities on the pristine grounds, and performances at the amphitheater. “All of the camp part- ners work extremely hard to find ways to make the camp experience memo- • • rable and motivating for kids,” said Birthday Party Family Activity Summer Fun Torino Foundation Camp Director Kelli Walters. “Our hope is that through these amazing camps, each child finds motivation to lift their spirits and mentors and friends to walk the journey with them.”
