Cover The area around the head of Søndre Strømfjord has been known for some time to contain saline lakes. The salinity in these closed- basin lakes has resulted from evaporation during the Holocene and as a result the sediments can be used as climate archives. The sediments in some of these lakes are laminated and it is easier to take cores when the lakes are frozen (see Anderson et al. this vol- ume). The photograph shows returning from Store Saltsø, one of the saline lakes in the area, after a day’s coring. The fossil shore- lines around the lake are highlighted by the snow in the background. The promontory, 540 m high, is composed of exfoliated granite belong- ing to the 1.86 Ga Prøven igneous complex and hosts an important bird cliff, as can be seen from the coloration.     Appeal to the Greenlandic and Danish governments not to abolish 1 the uranium zero tolerance policy in the Danish realm Nuuk and Copenhagen, 26 April 2013 The following statement has been signed by 48 NGOs The newly elected Greenlandic government and the Danish government have given notice that they intend to abolish the uranium zero tolerance policy which has been in effect in the Danish realm for twenty-five years and was carried unanimously in the Greenlandic parliament. Hence, there could be several uranium mining projects underway in Greenland in the near future. The mining project in Kuannersuit at Narsaq in Southern Greenland could alone make Greenland the fifth largest uranium exporter in the world. In addition, there are uranium deposits at Illorsuit, Puissattaq, Ivittuut and Motzfeldt Lake in Southern Greenland, Sarfartoq, Nassuttooq, Qaqqaarsuk and Attu in Western Greenland and Randbøldal and Milne Land in Eastern Greenland, and there might be deposits that have not yet been discovered. WE APPEAL to the Greenlandic and the Danish governments not to abolish the uranium zero tolerance policy, because uranium mining could contaminate the vulnerable Arctic environment and lead to nuclear proliferation. WE APPEAL to the Greenlandic and the Danish governments to prevent the combination of rare earth elements and uranium mining and to work proactively to promote renewable energies and energy efficiency in the Danish realm, the European Union and the rest of the world. WE ALSO APPEAL to the Greenlandic and the Danish governments to discourage nuclear proliferation and promote global nuclear disarmament. THE REASONS FOR OUR APPEAL ARE THE FOLLOWING: In addition to substantial chemical pollution from sulphuric acid, uranium mining leaves behind millions of tonnes of tailings containing radioactive materials.

    Extract from the foreword: WELCOME TO THE TRAIL This book is intended as a helping hand to visitors to Southern Greenland's Norse areas - either when planning their visit or when actually standing on the ruin sites. What was it really like back then when Norse formers and hunters lived here? How and where did they build their houses, how were they fitted out - for everyday life and for special occasions? What do the sagas tell us and what can archaeologists reveal? Often the remains from the past appear incomprehensible, the ruins inconceivable and incoherent and the historic reality hazy or obscured. It is therefore with great pleasure that the three local museums in Southern Greenland, in Nanortalik, Qaqortoq and Narsaq, are able to present this book. Here the experienced and knowledgeable archaeologist Jette Arneborg tells of the large classic Norse sites in our area: Brattahlid, where Erik the Red settled with his family at the end of the 980s; Gardar, where the Norsemen's bishop lived; Hvalsey Fjord's Farm and Church, where the latter is one of the best preserved Norse ruins in Greenland; and finally Herjolfsnes, with its very different location compared to the other sites. My emphasis is on human endeavours to cultivate a future in the face of difficulties caused by climatic and environmental transformation. I recognize locals’ initiatives to carve out a future in the promotion of sheep farming and tree-planting in southern Greenland and in adaptation processes of northern Greenlandic hunters to the ever-shifting environment.
