PARROT PRESS Metro Parrot Head Newsletter June 2010 NY, NJ, CT Vol. 18 No. 6 TALES FROM MY BANK OF BAD HABITS Well, I’m in full summer mode, how about you? The boat is in the water, the pool has just been opened and we are in the final planning stages for the 8th annual Metro and Morris at the Acoustic Café and Captain’s Cove Seaport in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Don’t forget to let Joe Lombardi ( [email protected] ) know if you are planning on taking the ferry over to Bridgeport on Saturday. The plan is for the noon boat out of Port Jefferson arriving just after 1PM when the Connecticut Metros will wisk you away to the show which starts at 2PM. The silent auction should be as great as ever and we will have a raffle of two dozen event t-shirts with triple CD disk sets of last year’s show. Don’t forget, Coral Reefer Doyle Grisham is sitting in with Jim Morris’ band this year, the first time they have all played together. So, please support this great club event and head on over. Check out www.metromorris.com for all the details. Don’t forget, we have the family picnic on Saturday July 24th and a booze cruise on July 31st, followed by Jimmy Buffett at Jones Beach on August 31st, details will follow. I have just one last item to cover. Kerry-Anne Willett, our newsletter editor, has been working hard and putting out a great newsletter since 2007. But just like all of us, things change, and her growing family commitments will have to take priority over the newsletter, and she has asked us to find a replacement. Since we have finally moved on to sending the newsletter on line, only mailing a few to members who have requested hard copies, any member can take on this task without having to turn their kitchen a distribution center every month. The job of editor can also be shared by one or more club members. The newsletter will continue to be the most important part of our club media, and we need to fill this void as soon as possible. So, show some club spirit and take a shot at it. Email me at [email protected] if you are interested. See you in Bridgeport ! All Club members, their families and friends are invited to attend. In years past, we’ve had e ranging in age from 6 months to 78 years. Fresh Pond Park offers something for everyone, the ba s are calm and the waves are gentle for the younger children. Older kids will enjoy tubing either up the creek (depending on the tides). There’s plenty of room on the beach for sunbathers and plenty in the picnic area to give folk’s a break from those UV rays. The volleyball net will be set up for tho ish to play. Although from photos of past picnics, it seems that many of us prefer to stand or sit in ater and relax and chat. he past, the Club will provide, burgers, hot dogs, corn-on-the-cob and soft drinks. We’re asking ees to provide a dish to share. Once again Lon Ormanian coordinating the picnic and this year he ses to be on time. Please contact Lon at 631-399-5540, to RSVP and to let him know what you pla At this point we’d like to emphasize the importance for members to RSVP. It will be a great help in ng of the picnic. past, we've had a road clean-up scheduled to coincide with the picnic. Last year, we broke with tra stead staffed a water station for the Soldier Ride - Wounded Warrior Bike-a-thon. We're going to ta from the pointy stick routine and do that again. See the related article. we are not going to be meeting and then breaking up into "park" and "road clean-up" groups, every an on meeting at the park. Those of us who staff the water station can leave from there. Dear METRO Parrot Head Club, On behalf of the Department of Transportation, I would like to thank all of the “Parrot Heads” for your continued effort to keep State Route 114 clean. Every time I receive your signature sheets it makes me wish we had more dedicated groups and individuals like yourselves to keep Long Island Clean. Thank you again for your continued efforts! Sincerely, Mark Hervan Assistant Resident Engineer, Riverhead NYSDOT On April 24, thirty-two club members participated in our annual Spring Road Clean-up and helped to kick off our 18 year of road clean-ups. Special thanks go out to those club members who came out that day and to all the club members who have ever grabbed a pointy stick and orange bag and pitched in to help over the years. It’s nice to know that our efforts continue to be recognized. THEY ASKED US BACK! For those of you who may not know, Soldier Ride is a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project. Participants get to bike the course along with wounded veteran's from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. The cause is a favorite of Jimmy Buffett's and he's supports the effort both up here and down in Key West Once again, we'll be setting up near Cyril's on the Napeague stretch. Just a short walk across Montauk Highway for the bar known for some of the best frozen drinks in The Hamptons. A community service event at a bar, it's what Parrot Heads do best. All kidding aside, we can certainly sacrifice a few hour of picnic time in order to help those men and women who sacrificed a great deal more. Anyone interested in participating in the Soldier Ride Event can mail Joe Lombardi at [email protected] 19th Annual Meeting of the November 4 - November 7, 2010 Minds 2010 (Key West, Florida) "Gypsies In The Palace" ILO @ TALKHOUSE With little fanfare, Ilo Ferreira has been added to the Talkhouse schedule on Thursday, July 22 in what's becoming the annual Pop-Parrotzi Birthday celebration. Tickets cost $35...there's no VIP section, so we'll be able to get up close to the stage. Those of you lucky enough to see Ilo last Summer were treated to a special appearance by Jimmy Buffett. It’s doubtful that he’ll show up again, trying to predict what Jimmy might do is about as easy and nailing jello to a brick wall. If you are considering coming out for the Family Picnic on July 24, I've been told that Ilo will be performing at the "Rock the Farm" benefit concert that night. Just like last year! That concert, (and the cost of tickets) has not yet been announced. You heard it here first campers. And to give you a little background on how Ilo came to be…… Intelligencer From Africa to Margaritaville Introducing Ilo. • By Matt McCue • Published Nov 27, 2009 Tom Freston, the 64-year-old MTV co-founder and former Viacom honcho, has among his hobbies these days the career development of a 30-year-old African singer named Ilo Ferreira, who goes by Ilo. On November 23, Freston and his friend Jimmy Buffett, 62, were there to support Ilo at his sold-out show at Joe’s Pub and his appearance later that night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, which they’d helped engineer.
