    Presentazione La scena di Canterbury fu un movimento musicale che si sviluppò tra la fine degli anni Sessanta e la meta dei Settanta nell’omonima cittadina del Kent. Anche se furono molti i gruppi che la composero – alcuni dei quali ancora oggi leggendari come i Soft Machine, i Caravan o i Matching Mole - il numero dei musicisti coinvolti fu sempre molto ridotto, favorendo così un rapporto osmotico tra le varie band anche nelle scelte musicali intraprese. Ciò che caratterizzò la Scena fu infatti una comune idea di arte che possiamo definire – citando Marcus O’Dair, autore della recente biografia di Wyatt – come “un certo stile rock psichedelico venato di jazz, pastorale, very english… con tempi complessi, una preferenza di tastiere rispetto alle chitarre e un modo di cantare convintamente radicato nell’East Kent, là dove i cantanti dell’epoca posavano tutti da Delta bluesman”. Nata con l’album Soft Machine (1968) e conclusa da Rock Bottom (1974) – nonostante i successivi epigoni - la Scena di Canterbury fu sicuramente il momento più alto di tutto il genere Progressive e uno dei movimenti musicali più innovativi (e altrettanto ostici) di tutto il rock. Riascoltato oggi può apparire troppo contorto e scarsamente fruibile, persino nelle sue espressioni più “pop” quali i dischi di Kevin Ayers o dei Caravan, ma in realtà è ancora un’esperienza unica ed entusiasmante per tutti gli ascoltatori disposti a superare le barriere e i tabù che troppo spesso caratterizzano il mondo della musica popolare.     ALLAN HOLDSWORTH R.I.P. 1946 - 2017 Progressive rock and jazz fusion guitar pioneer Allan Holdsworth, who Eddie Van Halen called “the best, in my book,” has died on April 16, 2017 of unknown causes. He was 70. Holdsworth’s daughter Louise confirmed the news on Facebook, saying “it is with heavy hearts that we notify everyone of the passing of our beloved father. We would appreciate privacy and time while we grieve the loss of our dad, grandad, friend and musical genius. We will update close friends and family when service arrangements have been made and will notify the public of an open memorial service, which all would be welcome. We are undeniably still in shock with his unexpected death and cannot begin to put into words the overwhelming sadness we are experiencing. He is missed tremendously.” Holdsworth first appeared on a record in 1969 with the group ‘Igginbottom. After ’70s stints in groundbreaking progressive rock and jazz fusion acts such as Soft Machine, the New Tony Williams Lifetime, Pierre Moerlen’s Gong, Bruford and UK, he released his first official solo album, I.O.U., in 1982. + + + + + Thanks to glasnostrd19 for sharing the show at The Traders’ Den. glasnostrd19 noted: This may be the most widely circulated Holdsworth show out there (other than with UK in 1978)... I don’t know how circulated this is directly from the master tape, and this is probably as good as it’s ever been circulated. I’m pretty sure this is the full show from Reseda. The last song was tacked on the same tape as “filler” (and it is a pretty cool jam and nice audience recording) so I left it in here.

    MENTAT ROUTAGE is a French collective performing a trans-artistic show that combines improvised music, tap-dance, painting and video-projection. At the crossroads between jazz, rock, free, and contemporary music, this outfit from Le Mans (France) creates a sonically and visually stunning universe that is considerably off the beaten track. The band MENTAT ROUTAGE was born in the streets in 1998, during a gig on the 21st of June, which is a special holiday celebrating music in France. Since 2002, they've won several awards: for their soundtrack for the movie “Mortinium”, and for their performances on stage. Mentat Routage recorded their first album in two sessions, in 2007 and 2009. Their album was released in April 2010 with the international label Musea Records. Several awards for Mentat Routage album: 1. best self-production award from SACEM (French musical organization), 2. finalist in PROGAWARDS in two categories : best first album and best production. (ProgAwards is devoted to recognizing the year’s best progressive albums. The members of the jury are international.) Magma qui a été de nouveau réduit à l'état de duo est, de nouveau en train de se reconstituer. Au concert de Spheroe, il y avait Klaus et Georges Letton ostensiblement venus là pour recruter; il a même été un temps question que Magma ait deux batteurs. On déplore que le film n’ai pas rejoint Chicago dans les hauteurs du box-office américain. L’europe et la France réserveront-elles un meilleur sort à cette nouvelle superproduction de 90 millions de dollars des frères Weinstein (fondateurs de Miramax) où plane l’ombre de Fellini? À suivre…. ÉDITO exit 2009 et la crise ! Ça y est 2010 est là ! une nouvelle énergie, de nouvelles envies, de nouveaux artistes, c’est tout ce que l’on vous souhaite pour redé- marrer de bon pied… D’ailleurs, en plus de votre magazine, on vous offre déjà ce mois-ci un dossier spécial rock entre découvertes (Local Natives, The Soft Pack…) et valeurs sûres (Vampire Weekend, Tindersticks, Beach House, Adam Green…), avec un focus sur les EP des groupes qui montent en puissance.

George Allen et Robert Parson 22 avril 1995 G.A. : L'emblème de Magma représente-t-il un oiseau, ou bien est-il abstrait ? C.V. : En le créant, je n'ai jamais pensé à un oiseau. J'avais en moi l'idée d'un symbole, d'un emblème, et je l'ai seulement noté sur un morceau de papier, c'était juste une esquisse. Au début, mon idée était de faire quelque chose qui ressemblerait à un vêtement égyptien. Ca devait ressembler à un morceau de tissu ou des feuilles de métal articulées qui envelopperaient le corps au niveau de la cage thoracique. Ca devait ressembler au plastron d'une armure, mais être souple et non pas rigide. G.A. : Le nom Magma est-il en kobaïen ou bien est-ce une référence à la lave ? Est-ce que le nom reflète le style du groupe ? C.V. : Oui, c'est une référence directe à la lave. En 1966, j'avais écrit un morceau et je faisais déjà partie d'un groupe avec Bernard Paganotti, qui est devenu bassiste de Magma. Déjà à l'époque, je cherchais le mot juste. Le morceau que j'avais écrit à l'époque s'intitulait "Nogma". Je cherchais le mot "Magma", sans savoir que c'était ce mot précis que je cherchais. Un jour, alors que le groupe n'avait pas encore de nom et que nous attendions devant un club parisien assez connu, la direction m'a dit que si nous n'avions pas de nom, nous ne pourrions pas jouer.
