Internship Newsletter —Spring, 2012 Pa ge 3 The Kennedy Center Participates With Sacred Heart University In Service Learning Program Twelve juniors and seniors from Sacred Heart University, began their service learning with The Kennedy Center this February. Sacred Heart students come to The Kennedy Center as part of their reli- gious class, The Human Search For Truth, Justice, and The Common Good, run by Professor Dr. Lois Gandt. Since our collaboration started at the end of September, 2010 over 100 students have done their service learning at The Kennedy Center. Each student commits to a minimum 16 hours of community service for approximately two months as a way to learn first hand the value of volunteering. Students choose a community service opportunity that relates to their major area of study and career goals. This experience is important, as it allows the students to be “hands on” and to relate their book learning to real -world situations. At the end of their service learning, the students complete an essay detailing their expe- riences comparing how it related to their religious teachings. Here are some quotes from service learners: “...It I could, I would let each and every one of their parents or guardians be aware of what a joy their child was for me to be around,” Megan Hickey, After School Program (Park City Magnet School) “I was able to not only make a difference as an intern at The Kennedy Center leading by example, but I met a person Chris, that I not only affected, but also was affected by. The bond that Chris and I formed in such a short time was unbelievable,” Brandon Fortuna, K.C. Vocational Program “My overall experience is more than words can describe. This is the best way I could have ever spent my time…” Denise West, After School Program (Winthrop School) Meet One Of Our Newest Service Learning Students...
