There is considerable potential for improvement of the coverage summarised in the maps, and further clarification is needed of the habitat requirements of species such as P. minuta, P. scutellarisand P. longicauda. 7 IDENTIFICATION Ptychoptera species resemble craneflies (Tipulidae) in having long legs. They are black, sometimes with wing spots, and sometimes with orange markings on the abdomen. The typical body length for the genus is 8-15 mm. There are very few Tipulidae of that size which are black or black and orange. The wing venation (below) is unlike that of any member of the Tipulidae, notably in having only one anal vein (which strongly curves down apica.11y, well beyond the wing base) and in the presence of a vena spuria (a false vein running through r-m; there is another very weak vena spuria between veins Cu and A). Anal vein False veins In the field, the posture of adults is characteristic of the genus. The wings are held in a delta shape (at about 450 to the body axis), slightly raised and with the plane of the wings angled inwards. In flight, they slightly resemble ichneumonids. Once recognised, these flies are very distinctive. The adults are normally found near potential breeding sites such as marshy seepages, swampy woodland, ditches, streams, ponds and lakes, but occasional individuals may be found as strays some distance from water.

    The Diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire: Craneflies and Winter Gnats by Phil Brighton 32, Wadeson Way, Croft, Warrington WA3 7JS [email protected] Version 1.1 26 November 2017 1 Summary This document provides a new checklist for the craneflies and winter gnats (Tipuloidea, Ptychopteridae and Trichoceridae) to extend the lists of the diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire first published by Kidd and Bindle in 1959. Overall statistics on recording activity are given by decade and hectad. Checklists are presented for each of the three Watsonian vice-counties 58, 59, and 60 detailing for each species the number of records, year of earliest and most recent record, and the number of hectads with records. A combined checklist showing distribution by the three vice-counties is also included, covering a total of 264 species, amounting to 75% of the current British checklist. Introduction This report is the third in a series to update and extend the partial checklist of the diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire published in 1959 by Leonard Kidd and Alan Brindle1. There were two previous updates, in 19642 and 19713. The previous reports in this series cover the soldierflies and allies4 and the Sepsidae5, the latter family not having been covered in Ref 1. The reader is referred to the first two reports for the background and rationale of these checklists, as well as the history of diptera recording and available data sources. The description of methodology is also kept to a minimum in the present report: only significant differences from the previous publications will be outlined.

Title: Drought, Dispersal, and Community Dynamics in Arid-land Streams Abstract approved: _____________________________________ David A. Lytle Understanding the mechanisms that regulate local species diversity and community structure is a perennial goal of ecology. Local community structure can be viewed as the result of numerous local and regional processes; these processes act as filters that reduce the regional species pool down to the observed local community. In stream ecosystems, the natural flow regime (including the timing, magnitude, and duration of high and low flow events) is widely recognized as a primary regulator of local diversity and community composition. This is especially true in arid- land streams, where low- and zero-flow events can occur frequently and for extended periods of time (months to years). Additionally, wetted habitat patches in arid-land stream networks are often fragmented within and among stream networks. Thus dispersal between isolated aquatic patches may also play a large role in regulating local communities. In my dissertation, I explored the roles that drought, dispersal, and local habitat factors play in structuring arid-land stream communities. I examined the impact of flow permanence and seasonal variation in flow and other abiotic factors on aquatic communities at both fine spatial scales over a long time period (8 years; Chapter 2) and at a broad spatial scale over a shorter time period (1-2 years; Chapter 4). Additionally, I quantified aquatic invertebrate aerial dispersal over moderate spatial scales (≤ 0.5 km) by conducting a colonization experiment using artificial stream pools placed along and inland from two arid-land streams (Chapter 4).

The vertical distribution of nocturnal aerial insect populations - especially Diptera Nematocera - in a high-holed beech stand was recorded by means of light traps placed at four levels from the forest floor to the top canopy. The insects were mainly trapped near the forest floor and to some extent in the beech canopy; the number recorded in the trunk space and above the top canopy was distinctly lower. In Tipulinae and Mycetophilidae, the vertical distribution declined with increasing height irrespective of season and weather; 80-85% of all specimens were recorded at ground level. In Limoniinae, Cecidomyiidae, Psychodidae and Sciaridae the vertical distribution pattern changed repeatedly during the season, being unimodal with a peak near the forest floor or bimodal with another one in the beech canopy.

INTRODUCTION Napa County Mosquito Abatement District (NCMAD) has been controlling mosquito populations for the citizens of Napa County since 1925. The District is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of representatives from each incorporated City and the County-at-large. There are currently eight employees who are responsible for controlling mosquitoes throughout the County. NCMAD works closely with other public agencies, park districts and wineries to provide an effective and environmentally sound mosquito control program. The District also works with planning agencies to minimize mosquito production in wetland restoration and enhancement projects. Sarcophaga africa Wiedemann, 1824, S. inaequalis Austen, 1909, S. exuberans Pandellé, 1896 and S. tibialis Macquart, 1851 showed well-defined peaks between early October 2001 and late April 2002, and only S. africa was trapped at other times of year.
