Walking among the villages during my last visit to Yixing and seeing numerous potters making teapots in every household, I finally understood the meaning of the phrase "jiajia huhu du zhipei" (every family is making teapots). Because of its rich deposit of clay and its endless generations of talented potters, Yixing has long been known as the taodu (pottery capital) of China, and this fame continues today. Wang Yin-Xian began her study of Yixing ware in 1956 under the guidance of Wu Yungen, Zhu Kemin, Pei Shimin and Jiang Rong. -

The delegation was led by the internationally known artist Richard Notkin and the Chinese American ceramic artist and writer Guangzhen Zhou. The other participants were: East Asian art historian and professor Dr. Daphne Lang Rosenzweig; the ceramic art educators and professors Carolyn Broadwell, Barbara Brown, Lee Rexrode and Marvin Sweet; the studio potters Geo Lastomirsky, Ann Schliffer and Gerry Wallace; and the ceramic students Tia Mazzola and Karyn Murphy. We were in Shanghai for two days, and visited the Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai University, the Fine Art College, and Hanguang Ceramic Art Company. On a boat on the Huangpu River, I looked at the Bund of the Shanghai night skyline, which brought me many memories from the past. -

Signature __________________________________________________ ii Abstract The revival of Chinese pottery tradition from Yixing (I-hsing) after the Chinese Cultural Revolution raises a series of questions on cultural production, history, and cultural identity in post-Mao China. The study of Yixing pottery reveals China’s transformation from a mode of production dominated by communist ideology and planned economy to a new era marked by a type of hybrid ideological and economic system. This essay argues that Yixing pottery is a politicized artifact, in which the politics of value and the politics of identity arise from the commodification and ideological appropriation of revitalized traditions. Yixing pottery is culturally informed; socially practiced; politically charged; and commercially contaminated. -

This ceramic tradition 20 was highly popularized during the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644), and continues to be 21 manufactured through the present day. Throughout history, Zisha stoneware vessels have been 22 highly desirable objects used mainly by high status individuals, and by the early 17th century was 23 exported to Europe as trade items. Soon thereafter, European imitations of Zisha stonewares were 24 produced in the Netherlands at Delft, and in England and Germany. Today, authentic Zisha wares 25 are difficult to discern from imitations using the naked eye alone, which poses problems for 26 provenance, authenticity of antiquities, and reconstructing ancient ceramic technologies developed 27 in China. The goal of this study was to determine the elemental and mineralogical properties of 28 Zisha clays and to evaluate their suitability for archaeological provenance study. This study used 29 petrographic thin-section analysis and neutron activation analysis (NAA) to characterize multiple 30 distinct types of Zisha clays, as well as other regional clays, from deposits around Huanglong 31 Mountain (Yixing City, China). -
