The Five Pits Trail
The Five Pits Trail Walkers, cyclists and horse riders can all enjoy the countryside of the Five Pits Trail. Follow the 5.5 mile off-road surfaced route from Grassmoor Country Park to Tibshelf Ponds or extend your route to 7.5 miles by exploring the route through Williamthorpe Ponds and Holmewood Woodlands. The trail mostly follows the route of the Great Central Railway. Since the large collieries and smaller pits along the railway closed, the landscape has changed dramatically. Parts of the land were opencast and Holmewood Sculpture Funded by the Young Roots Heritage Lottery Fund, students from most of the original railway line removed. Deincourt School worked with artists from Gotham-D to design this sculpture. Using metal, stone and wood, the sculpture shows leaves and keys (seeds) and takes its inspiration from both the Now you will find a rolling trail that has some long steep slopes. This may limit some people's access in places - look for natural and industrial heritage of the area. the 'steep slope' symbols on the map. There are no stiles or steps and you will find seats along the way to stop, rest and enjoy the views. Look out for the information boards with large site maps showing some of the heritage and wildlife along the trail. Mansfield Road Walking Routes Williamthorpe Walkers can explore the surrounding landscape on Public Rights of Way by following one of the Five Ponds Pits Trail Circular Walks. These walks are between 2.5 and 5.5 miles in length and each walk is waymarked This network of ponds, with a coloured disc.

But in this issue of Your Rykneld we wanted to take the opportunity to say a big thank you to our customers for your patience during one of the coldest spells on record. None of us will forget too quickly the sub-zero temperatures, snow and ice which made some New homes in Calow See page 14 of our estates impassable and caused major problems for people and their homes. Our staff pulled out all the stops to deliver services where and when possible and we appreciate the fantastic letters of support you have sent us. See page 6. We are still dealing with the fallout from that week as we work our Contents way through the large backlog of repairs caused by the weather which led to delays in completing others. We will do this as quickly as possible and ask you to bear with us over the next few months. In this issue of the magazine we celebrate the 04 completion of 50 new homes in North Wingfield. Wingfield Court has been developed in partnership Community Champions with North East Derbyshire District Council and offers homes for rent and for Shared Ownership. Rykneld celebrates the people The mixture of bungalows and houses replace who make a difference some of the non-traditionally built properties on the Whiteleas estate and we welcomed our first customers into their new homes in April.

Chesterfield Parks and Open Spaces Strategy 2015–2024 Foreword Chesterfield, distinct by its famous crooked spire and known as the eastern gate way to the Peak District, is a dynamic and developing market town. It is a relatively densely populated Borough that has diverse communities. Although benefiting from key developments and growth in recent years, the legacy of declining industries have contributed to areas of comparative deprivation where health and other issues remain. The green spaces in the Borough have an essential part to play, particularly to contribute to improving health and the quality of life for all our communities. They are a key element in helping to tackle the legacies and ongoing issues arising from urban and semi-urban communities. Good quality, accessible open spaces provide sporting and recreational facilities, green lungs for communities to breathe and contribute to a vibrant economy, encouraging higher quality and more sustainable economic development. Whilst close to the Peak District National Park, biodiversity and sustainable landscapes remain crucial to the Borough. The strategy seeks to improve the biodiversity and develop opportunities to promote a sustainable environment. For our open space network to be fully utilised, it is important to recognise our community’s needs. Key to the success of this strategy will be improving the quality, ensuring adequate provision and access for all communities, and maximising the use of what we have by engaging communities to an extent where they will feel an ownership of their space. This strategy seeks to develop the core strands of Prioritising investment, Effective and sustainable use of resources, Increasing use and Working effectively with the community and partners by providing a framework of strategic actions to maximise the benefits of our Parks and Open spaces.

RURAL DISCONTENT IN DERBYSHIRE 1830·1850 Alan Frank Jones Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Sheffield January 2004 ii Alan Frank Jones RURAL DISCONTENT IN DERBYSlllRE 1830-1850 ABSTRACT Social protest, especially in agricultural regions, has occupie~ and caused considerable debate among, historians for many years. This thesis seeks to add to this debate, by looking at various forms of protest in Derbyshire between 1830 and 1850. This thesis examines three aspects of criminal activity: poaching, arson and animal maiming. It contends that none of these crimes can simply be categorised as acts of protest. In conjunction with an investigation of these three crimes, acts of protest such as strikes and episodes of reluctance to conform are also discussed. It argues that the motives behind various criminal activities and anti-authority behaviour were varied and complex. Arson and animal maiming were rarely co-ordinated, mostly they were individual attacks. However, on a few occasions both arson and animal maiming were directed against certain people. In the instances of poaching, there were more proven cases of gang participation than in either arson or animal maiming, with groups of men raiding game preserves. However, the great majority of raids were individual undertakings. What is more, poaching was carried out on a greater scale throughout the county than either arson or animal maiming. This thesis seeks to put these activities into the context of economic and social change in Derbyshire between 1830 and 1850. It maintains that there was a breaking down of the old social order.
