Everest Base Camp is an ideal choice for those who are new to the delights of trekking. With our itinerary you get the opportunity to trek to both Ama Dablam Base Camp and Everest Base Camp. We have been operating treks in Nepal and to the Everest region for many years and our itineraries have been carefully planned to provide extra rest and acclimatisation days to ensure you remain fit and healthy and as a reserve against bad weather. For further advice take a look at our Blog article "Our Seven Tips for a Successful Trek to Everest Base Camp". The Everest region is the most famous area in Nepal and perhaps the entire Himalaya as it is the centre for the many mountaineering expeditions. Here Himalayan giants from Everest to Ama Dablam tower above the Khumbu Valley, making this valley one of the world’s most magical and inspiring places to visit and trek. Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park covers the area known as the Khumbu and is situated in the north-eastern region of Nepal. It is spectacular mountainous country and most of the park is steep and rugged with paths that traverse and wind round the hillsides, the terrain broken by deep gorges and glacial valleys, while the major valleys have some relatively level areas which are used for growing crops and grazing.

4.4 Lobuche to Gokyo by the Cho La 53 73 67 Day 1 Lobuche to Dzonghla 2-3 hours Day 2 Dzonghla to Thangnak via the Cho La 5-8 hours Day 3 Thangnak to Gokyo 2-4 hours This section describes an adventurous route that links the Khumbu Valley with the Gokyo Valley, traversing a high pass with a glacier. Under good conditions it can be completed by any strong trekker; after heavy snowfall it may be unsafe, but there is a fallback ‘long way round’. We describe the link in the westerly direction, for those descending from Lobuche, but it works equally well going eastward from Gokyo. Chola Tsho, with Taboche and Cholatse Lobuche (4910 m) to Dzonghla (4600 m) • From Lobuche, divert from the standard descent path by bearing right 1 km south of Lobuche. Enjoy the gentle traverse as it heads slightly uphill, with great views back up the moraine, and also across the valley to Dughla and Pheriche with Ama Dablam and other peaks. • As you round the shoulder of Arakam Tse westward, you gain amazing views over the glacial Chola Tsho lake, with the craggy peaks of Taboche and Cholatse as backdrop. • The path swings right, westward, but remains easy walking across an area with many streams. After crossing the largest of these, you begin your fnal uphill approach to Dzonghla, almost hidden in its valley. • There’s a couple of lodges here, but facilities are fairly primitive: don’t count on an inside toilet. However, you may well see snowcocks strutting their stuf and it’s pleasantly quiet here.

Contemporary Human Impacts on Alpine Ecosystems in the Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park, Khumbu, Nepal Alton Byers The Mountain Institute, Elkins, WV An integrated analysis of landscape change in the alpine zone of Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park, Nepal, is presented based on the results from five separate research expeditions conducted between 1984 and 2004. Research results indicate that alpine ecosystems (4,000–5,200 m) within the Imja and Gokyo valleys have been significantly impacted during the past twenty to thirty years as a result of poorly controlled tourism. Impacts within the alpine zone include the overharvesting of fragile alpine shrubs and plants for expedition and tourist lodge fuel, overgrazing, accelerated erosion, and uncontrolled lodge building. Evidence suggests that similar scenarios of landscape change in the alpine zone are occurring elsewhere around the Everest massif as the result of adventure tourism. This article stresses that the alpine zone is a comparatively neglected landscape that is in need of greater protection, conservation, and restoration involving integrated, applied research to the clarifi- cation of problems, the design of remedial projects, and monitoring of their impacts. ‘‘Community-based Con- servation and Restoration of the Everest Alpine Zone,’’ a Sherpa-led project established in May 2004, is provided as an example of how the paper’s research results are currently being utilized by local communities.
