Eelarve väiksus andis tõuke kulutada rohkem aega tulevikule mõtlemisele – selle tulemusena võeti kevadisel üldkogul vastu Akadeemia arengu- kava 2014–2020 kontseptuaalsed alused. Lühiajalises perspektiivis otsustas Akadeemia alustada Süvauuringute Instituudi osade kasva- tamist, pikaajalises perspektiivis otsustati vanemate akadeemiate eeskujul luua Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia Fond, suurendamaks tule- vikus Akadeemia sõltumatust poliitilistest ja majanduslikest otsus- test tingitud riikliku toetuse kõikumistest. Vaatamata põhitegevuse toetamise vajakajäämistele sai Akadeemia eelarvelist raha oma maja aastaid läbijooksnud katuse vahetamise lõpetamiseks ja eurorahade konkursil õnnestus meil saada toetust maja tuleohutuse ja juurdepääsetavuse mõningaseks parandamiseks. Kriisieelne, iga-aastaseks maja korrastamiseks ja amortiseerunud seadmete asendamiseks mõeldud raha ei ole ikka veel taastunud. Teaduse arengu mõjutamiseks Eestis moodustati Akadeemia eest- võttel Eesti Teaduse Tippkeskuste Nõukogu, kes koondab ja edastab tippteadlaste teaduskorraldusega seotud arvamused otsustajatele. Nagu ka aastaraamatu tekstist nähtub, on teadlaskonna ühiskondlik aktiivsus kasvanud, kuid enamikul juhtudel pole see mõjutanud ot- sustajaid. Lisaks olemasolevatele alalistele komisjonidele moodustas Akadee- mia ka Küberkaitse komisjoni, mis ühendab erinevate ametkondade spetsialiste erapooletul pinnal, soodustades nende omavahelist info- vahetust ning uurimistöö ja rahvusvahelise suhtlemise koordinee- rimist. Akadeemia edukus on tihedalt seotud tema liikmete edukusega. Jaan Einastole omistati Viktor Ambartsumjani nimeline rahvusvaheline auhind fundamentaalse panuse eest tumeaine ja universumi suure- mastaabilise struktuuri avastamisel. Akadeemia liikmete väiksemate saavutustega saab iga lugeja aastaraamatus ise tutvuda. Leo Mõtus 5 KROONIKA 22.28. jaanuaril esindas juhatuse liige Peeter Tulviste Akadeemiat Rahvusva- helise Akadeemiate Liidu (Union Académique Internationale) peaassambleel New Delhis. 23. jaanuaril toimunud juhatuse istungil arutati Akadeemia 2012. a tegevus- kava ning Akadeemia arengukava aastateks 2011−2015. Kõne all oli Jaan Kaplinski Rootsi Akadeemia Nobeli komiteele 2012. aasta kirjanduspreemia nominendiks esitamine. Juhatus otsustas nimetada Akadeemia esindajaks HTM töörühma “Horisont 2020” akadeemik Martin Zobeli ja Akadeemia esindajaks SA Tallinna Tehnika- ja Teaduskeskuse nõukokku akadeemik Jakob Kübarsepa. Arstiteaduse ja Tervishoiu Strateegia Alalise Komisjoni koosseisu kinnitati täiendavalt akadeemik Toomas Asser ja Ida-Tallinna Keskhaigla juhatuse esimees Ralf Allikvee. Esitati kandidaadid Eesti Teadus- agentuuri hindamiskomisjoni koosseisu. 23. jaanuaril osales asepresident Jüri Engelbrecht Euroopa teadusülikoolide ühenduse (League of European Research Universities, LERU) korraldatud teaduspoliitilisel nõupidamisel Brüsselis. 27. jaanuaril toimus AHHAA keskuses Tartus Teaduste Akadeemia füloge- neetika ja süstemaatika komisjoni laiendatud koosolek. 8.9. veebruaril viibis peasekretäri asetäitja Galina Varlamova Riias, osa- lemaks Läti Teaduste Akadeemia korraldatud nõupidamisel teaduse ja inno- vatsiooni programmiga Horizon 2020 seotud strateegiliste tegevuste teemal. 20. veebruaril toimunud juhatuse istungil arutati läbi Akadeemia osakondade ettepanekute alusel koostatud Akadeemia arengukava (20112015) lähtema- terjalid ning määrati ajakava arengukava vastuvõtmiseks. Kuulati ära infor- matsioon Vene Teaduste Akadeemia delegatsiooni visiidist Eestisse, ITTO ja Tallinna Tehnikaülikooli alustatavast partnerlustegevusest ning Akadeemia liikmete ja välisliikmete valimisest. 20. veebruaril toimus Akadeemia liikmete ühine näitusekülastus Arhitektuuri- muuseumi Rotermanni Soolalattu, kus tutvuti Pärnu linnaarhitekt Olev Siin- maa 130. sünniaastapäevale pühendatud näitusega “Rannalinn, seenrõdu ja viinakapp”. Haarava loenguga esines akadeemik Mart Kalm. Üritusest võtsid osa akadeemikud Georg Liidja, Leo Mõtus, Urmas Varblane, Mihkel Veider- ma ja Richard Villems. 22.23. veebruaril võtsid peasekretär Leo Mõtus ja ITTO osakonna juhataja Tarmo Soomere Helsingis osa koosluse FuturICT Nordic Hub asutamis- koosolekust. Eesmärgiks on luua Põhjamaade ühine koostöögrupp kompleks- uuringute valdkonnas. FuturICT tegeleb fundamentaaluuringutega ning loob 7 info- ja kommunikatsioonitehnoloogia meetodeid ja vahendeid sotsiaalsete ja majanduslike arengute uurimiseks ja juhtimiseks. 29. veebruarist1. märtsini osales asepresident Jüri Engelbrecht Euroopa Tea- dusnõukogu (European Research Council, ERC) 5. aastapäeval Brüsselis. 2. märtsil arutas asepresident Jüri Engelbrecht EL teadus- ja arendustegevuse 6 RP koordineerimistegevuste valdkonda kuuluva projekti European Network of Funding Agencies – Coordination of National Complexity Research and Training Activities (Complexity-NET) partnerite jätkukoosolekul ühiseid tule- vikutegevusi. Arutluse all oli koostöö FuturICT’iga. Üritus toimus Brüsselis. 13. märtsil võttis asepresident Jüri Engelbrecht osa EL T&A 7RP eriprogram- mi “Inimesed” nõukoja istungist Brüsselis. 14. märtsil toimus Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia ja Eesti Inseneride Liidu korral- dusel vestlusring TEADUSELT ETTEVÕTLUSELE teemal “Energiamajandus”. 19. märtsil toimunud juhatuse istungil tutvuti Akadeemia arengukava erine- vate versioonidega ning kuulati ära juhatuse liikmete arvamused. Juhatus ot- sustas esitada Akadeemia arengukava 2014‒2020 kontseptuaalsed alused üld- kogule heakskiitmiseks ja teha Akadeemia juhtkonnale ülesandeks leida Aka- deemia liikmeskonnast eestvedaja süvauuringute instituudi asutamise etteval- mistamiseks. Kiideti heaks finantstegevus 2011. aastal ja 2012. a eelarve ning otsustati saata need üldkogule kinnitamiseks. Karl Schlossmanni nimeline me- dal otsustati anda akadeemik Ain-Elmar Kaasikule. Samuti otsustati kuulutada välja 2012. a võistlus üliõpilaste teadusauhindadele ning kinnitati komisjoni koosseis auhindade määramiseks. Kinnitati Akadeemia üldkogu 18.04.2012 aastakoosoleku päevakord. Kuulati ära akadeemik Enn Tõugu ettepanek Kü- berkaitse komisjoni loomisest Akadeemia juurde. 22.23. märtsil esindas välissuhete peaspetsialist Piret Press Akadeemiat üle- euroopalise teabekeskuste võrgustiku EURAXESS riiklike kontaktorganisat- sioonide esindajate nõupidamisel Brüsselis. Räägiti teadlasviisaga seonduva- test probleemidest ja tutvustati üleeuroopalise teadlaste küsitluse tulemusi. 30. märtsil toimus Akadeemia majas Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia juhatuse ja Vene Teaduste Akadeemia delegatsiooni kohtumine. Vene TA poolt osalesid asepresident Nikolai Laverov ja Maateaduste Osakonna juhataja Alexandr Gliko. Eesti poolt esindasid asepresident Jüri Engelbrecht, peasekretär Leo Mõtus ja Informaatika- ja Tehnikateaduste juhataja Tarmo Soomere. Veel osalesid ja kõnelesid professor Sergey Zilitinkevich (Soome Meteoroloogia Instituut) ja akadeemik Dimitri Kaljo. Kirjutati alla maateaduste alase koostöö memorandumile. 4. aprillil toimus Akadeemia saalis akadeemik Enn Lusti avalik akadeemiline loeng “Arengutest kõrgefektiivses energeetikas”. 8 11.12. aprillil osales asepresident Jüri Engelbrecht Euroopa akadeemiate ühenduse (European Federation of National Academies of Sciences and Hu- manities, ALLEA) peaassambleel Roomas. ALLEA presidendiks aastateks 20122014 valiti professor Günter Stock Berliini-Brandenburgi Teaduste Akadeemiast. Teaduseetika alalise komisjoni esimeheks valiti prof Göran Hermeren Rootsist. Peaassamblee kiitis heaks ALLEA deklaratsiooni Open Science for the 21st century. 18. aprillil toimunud Akadeemia üldkogu aastakoosolekul tehti kokkuvõtteid 2011. a tegevusest. Sõna ülevaateks said osakondade juhatajad Jaak Aaviksoo, Tarmo Soomere, Ilmar Koppel ja Urmas Varblane ning president Richard Vil- lems. Üldkogu kinnitas Akadeemia 2011. a aruande. Peasekretär Leo Mõtus andis ülevaate Akadeemia 2011. a eelarve täitmisest ja tutvustas 2012. a eel- arvet. Tutvustati 2011. a valitud uusi akadeemikuid, teadusliku ettekandega

Department of Physics, Acadia Uni- versity, Wolfville, Nova Scotia B4P 2R6, Canada Virtually all terrestrial impact craters exhibit a circular geometry in plan-form; only three impact sites exhibiting non-circular, elongate forms have been identified on Earth. One of these exceptional sites is the Bloody Creek Crater located in southwestern Nova Scotia, an approximately 0.42 km long-axis elliptical crater first identified in 1987 during a regional air photo survey. It was confirmed as an impact crater in 2009 through integrated geomorphic, geophysical, and petrographic data. The structure’s rare ellipticity, pristine definition, preservation through shock metamorphic features of anomalously high pressures at the rim, low depth-to-diameter ratio, as well as age remain ambiguous and complicate the interpretation of the origin and evolution of the crater. The purpose of this study is to quantify the form of the feature in order to better understand the nature and age of impact. To achieve this objective, analytical software was used to assess the shape of the crater rim. An extensive review of the literature was also performed to understand the controls on crater formation as well as to synthesize a model for the geological evolution of the site which would aid in the interpretation of the age of the structure. Results demonstrate that the form of the crater rim is best approximated by an ellipse, as illustrated by comparison of the RMSE (Root-Mean-Square Error) calculated for various geometric models.

Tectonic activity that recycles crust along active plate margins, erosion, and the burial of impact craters underneath layers of sediment and lava have either removed or concealed the majority of the Earth’s cosmic scars. Only 199 impact structures (counting fields of small impact craters produced during the same event as one) and 40 individual horizons of proximal and distal impact ejecta (again, counting layers with the same age at different localities as one) have thus far been recognized on our planet (Fig. 1). Those impact structures and deposits span a time from more than ~3.4 billion years (Ga) before present (Archean impact spherule layers in South Africa and Western Australia) to roughly 6 years ago (the Chelyabinsk airburst in Russia on February 15, 2013, which shattered windows and whose main stony meteorite mass produced a 8-meter-wide circular hole in the frozen Lake Chebarkul; see Issue 133). The re-opening of diplomatic ties between the USA and Burma raises the question as to whether the US embargo on Burmese rubies and jade, and the European embargo on all Burmese gems, will soon be lifted. 11/12 Regardless of the intentions of the embargoes, they were hardly consistent (the US predictably banned Burma rubies but not Burma petroleum products), were ignored or circumvented by much Contents of the trade, and probably had little overall effect. The statistics reported by Pala International suggest that Burmese gem production was down in 2010/11 compared with previous years, but jadeite production was up very considerably as were jadeite prices, with China being the major market. 2 Talk of politics, the future and the gem trade brings us naturally to the thorny issues of disclosure and ethics.
