National Bank of Greece (NBG) Memo Name: James Zhang Phone #: (757) 788-9962 College/School: CLAS Year: Class of 2017 Company Description [NYSE; NGB] is a Greek bank and financial services company that primarily operates in commercial banking, but also has business in retail banking, investment banking, asset management, and insurance. The National Bank of Greece SA previously wrote off huge losses on its balance sheet during the Eurozone debt crisis, it has been on a steady path to recovery since the second half of 2013, and has been expanding its business in various sectors throughout Europe. Specifically, the rise in Greek lending and home loans, diversification by way of improved operations in Turkey and emerging markets, and the general recovery of the Greek economy will propel NGB to huge growth in the long term. Most notably, recent actions by Mario Draghi and the European Central Bank will create a healthy, stable environment for the National Bank of Greece to achieve its upside potential over time. Thesis / Key Points Rise in lending and specific developments in the banking sector in Greece will play to NBG’s advantage As Greece’s largest lender, NBG has acted swiftly in the past year to boost its position financially by increasing loans and retailing banking, as well as increasing capitalization from outside investors and generating domestic confidence. o Its nonperforming loans (NLP) have receded drastically and will contribute to its profitability when compared with its 3 closest rivals, Piraeus Bank, Alpha Bank, and EuroBank, who have all booked operating losses in this field. In addition, NGB now controls a quarter of commercial banking in Greece and 25% of total consumer deposits, and has also proceeded to raise around €2.5 billion in capital to reduce the Greece government’s holding stake in the bank. -

A major case study of Cooperative Bank of Chania (CBC) is presented to introducing the analytical approach of social network analysis, via UCINET, to represent membership ties and managerial ties in the second largest Greek cooperative bank. The concept of ethics in doing business is extended in a deliberate tendency to build transactional networks that enforce pre-existing social networks and stay tuned with sustainable local economies, a notion consistent with locality in multicultural Europe. Cooperative banking operates in intersection of emotional capitalism and social enterprise, as a cultural process through which new interactional- emotional scripts of economic relationships are illustrated by the cultural frames of cooperation or team work. The case of CBC of Chania shows how non-commercial ties of buyers- sellers matter in “major purchases” and insulate from crisis. Most such transactions take place among kin, friends, or acquaintances that substitute impersonal markets, especially when decisions involve high uncertainty; so common values like philotimo promote connectedness and builds trust that prevails in dealing with risk in order to make financial decisions, sustain and support them. -

Dr. Natalya Ketenci Yeditepe University Abstract The Greek-Turkish relations have been complex in different aspects for a long time. However, neighborhood makes these countries close to each other in political, military and economic terms. Geopolitical location of Turkey makes it strategically important for Greece. Despite of the economic crisis in Greece bilateral trade between these two countries almost doubled for the last five years. Energy and minerals are significant part of this trade and it is expected that natural gas will be one of the most important determinants of the bilateral trade. The energy products trade is two sided and creates strategic meaning for both countries. This chapter analyzes energy markets in Greece and Turkey separately and the Greek-Turkish relations in terms of energy. Completed natural gas pipeline of 296 km connects Turkey and Greece and delivers natural gas of Azerbaijan to Europe. There are several planned or under construction projects that connect Turkey and Greece. Impact of Turkey and Greece as energy hubs on the Greek-Turkish relations and various possibilities for the future cooperation at the energy market are discussed in this chapter. 1 Energy – economic growth relationships The Energy Union is the European Union’s (EU) long-term project, which consists of five targeting dimensions. -

Since Phase 2, Greece has introduced an express denial of tax deductibility of bribes. Greece has also taken numerous initiatives to raise the level of awareness of the foreign bribery offences and of the OECD Convention either through public measures or private activities. 2. In particular, the Export Credit Insurance Organisation includes the foreign bribery offence in its presentations as a matter of course. The market authorities, including the Hellenic Capital Markets Commission and the Athens Exchange, have undertaken initiatives on corruption, including foreign bribery. Awareness initiatives have also been undertaken within the Ministries of Finance and Economy, Justice, and the Interior, Public Administration and Decentralisation, and among tax officials. The Hellenic Banks Association in conjunction with all major commercial banks have organised meetings and seminars on the detection of corrupt practices, including money laundering and foreign bribery. However, the Working Group notes that no concrete action has been undertaken by the Hellenic Aid to further raise awareness of the Convention and the foreign bribery offence for its staff. -

THE BRITISH SCHOOL AT ATHENS STRATEGIC PLAN FOR RESEARCH 2015-2020 The British School at Athens is the United Kingdom’s hub for advanced research in the humanities and social sciences in Greece and its wider Balkan, Levantine, Mediterranean, and European contexts. The School conducts, enables and promotes research of international excellence, exploring the impact of Hellenism worldwide. Its projects make significant original contributions to knowledge and offer long-term perspectives on contemporary questions. The School will exploit its historical presence and strategic location on the borders of a Europe undergoing major economic, social and political change to present academics and policy makers with research which gives a long view of the different forms of integration and connection which have played out across the region, and of their social consequences. The wider reach of Hellenism and the products of Anglo-Hellenic cultural engagement are explored from comparative perspectives, contributing to the dialogue of cultural diplomacy which is essential to effective UK engagement in the region. This plan introduces major new projects; projects which connect past and present research to advance current debate; and projects which give a new relevance to the School’s legacy data. The School’s work is characterized by innovation: the methodologies developed and data obtained in turn inspire and sustain new generations of researchers. Creative and effective use of our archive, collections and legacy data is a priority. Country Report on Human Rights Practices in Greece Page 1 of 17 Greece Country Reports on Human Rights Practices - 2006 Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor March 6, 2007 Greece is a constitutional republic and multiparty parliamentary democracy, with an estimated population of 11 million. In March 2004 the New Democracy Party won the majority of seats in the unicameral Vouli (parliament) in free and fair elections, and Konstantinos Karamanlis became the prime minister. Civilian authorities generally maintained effective control of the security forces. The government generally respected the human rights of its citizens; however, there were problems in several areas. The following human rights abuses were reported: abuse by security forces, particularly of illegal immigrants and Roma; overcrowding and harsh conditions in some prisons; detention of undocumented migrants in squalid conditions; limits on the ability of ethnic minorities to self-identify; restrictions on freedom of speech; restrictions and administrative obstacles faced by members of non-Orthodox religions; detention and deportation of unaccompanied or separated immigrant minors, including asylum seekers; domestic violence against women; trafficking in persons; discrimination against ethnic minorities and Roma; substandard living conditions for Roma; inadequate access to schools for Romani children; and child exploitation in nontraditional labor. Arbitrary or Unlawful Deprivation of Life There were no reports that the government or its agents committed any politically motivated killings; however, in September there were reports that coast guard authorities threw detained illegal migrants overboard and six of them drowned. -
