It's At 19, tough, stubborn Christopher Leiningen came to South America and built levees to claim thousands of acres of Rio Negro river land for a chocolate plantation. Now 34, with no knowledge of women, he recruits a The Naked King bride in New Orleans. She's beautiful, independent, and arrives ready to be his stalwart helpmate; however, no one has told him she's a widow. He rejects her. During the next week, as she awaits the boat to take her back to The Naked King US, they learn that legions of army ants will The Naked King in a few days' time. She joins the fight to save the plantation; their courage and his probable loss of all he's worked for may crack his resolve to send her away. Given the fact that this is the Fifties and the Code was coming to an end, this is still a remarkably erotic film, almost Tennessee Williams like in its treatment of sexual issues. He came to the South American jungles as a teenager and built up a plantation out of the jungle and it took him over 15 years to do it. He now decides to get himself a wife and begat some children. Heston says so quite frankly he has pointedly refrained from indulging The Naked King lust with the native women because in The Naked King society there'a a nasty name for whites The Naked King do so. In keeping with his Tennessee Williams like character, he's from New Orleans so his attitude to darker skinned people is understandable. He has his brother put in an advertisement for a mail order bride and Heston can't believe his luck when the drop The Naked King gorgeous Eleanor Parker shows up on his door. She's not what you would picture a mail order bride to be. But then marital problems arise when he discovers she's a widow, used goods as the common phrase was back in the day. Parker has a few of her own issues and that and Heston's inexperience in these matters lead to a rocky start and almost an ending. But then come the ants. As District Commissioner William Conrad says, every generation or two something puts ants in the ants pants and up they come out of their ant hills and go on the march destroying every scrap of life before them. And man has found no way to stop them. The ants kind of make everyone come together in a crisis. What they do is some of the most frightening stuff ever put on film. If The Naked Jungle were made today it would be far more explicit about all the sexual problems than this version was. There might be better special effects. But you won't get better players than The Naked King will in Charlton Heston and Eleanor Parker as leads. Unless they resurrected Tennessee Williams to write the screenplay. • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

  • A Guide to the Filmscripts in the Lilly Library Book Department
From Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion to Zorro Rides Again: A Guide to the Filmscripts in the Lilly Library Book Department There are presently over nine hundred scripts in the Lilly Li brary Book department. The movies represented range from the silent version of Ben Hur to Breaking Away. The collection's scope is broad; one can find scripts for great film classics, musicals, mys teries, adventures, shorts, westerns, comedies, and science fiction movies. Many types of filmscripts make up the collection-drafts, cutting continuities, preliminary editions, shooting finals. Gener ally the scripts are accompanied by publicity photos. Although the majority of filmscripts in the collection are for talkies, several scripts are for silent films. The text of a silent film script is devoted primarily to directions for camera shots and de scriptions of the action, and provides title captions instead of dia logue. The earliest script in the collection is for The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (released in 1921), the film that gave Rudolph Valentino his first starring role. The Big Parade (1925), King Vidor's popular film about an average man's experiences at war, estab lished John Gilbert as a top star. The Jazz Singer (1927) was the first full length feature with both singing and talking, starring AI }olson in his first movie role. Wings (1928), considered to be the last of the silent spectaculars, was the first movie to receive an Academy Award. Clara Bow and Charles Rogers starred in this tale of World War I flyers. One of the most lavish films of the silent era was the the 1926 MGM version of Ben Hur, starring Ramon Novarro, directed by William Wellman.

  • Environment Under the Gun: Literature and Environmentalism
ENVIRONMENT UNDER THE GUN: LITERATURE AND ENVIRONMENTALISM IN COLD WAR CENTRAL AMERICA By JACOB GOASLIND PRICE A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Spanish Written under the direction of Jorge Marcone And approved by _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October 2019 ©2019 JACOB GOASLIND PRICE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION ENVIRONMENT UNDER THE GUN: LITERATURE AND ENVIRONMENTALISM IN COLD WAR CENTRAL AMERICA by JACOB GOASLIND PRICE Dissertation Director: Jorge Marcone This dissertation explores how Central American poets reinterpret both the political, historical, and cultural value of landscapes that were devastated by new political, economic, and international military governmental policy that coincided with the Cold War. By examining environmentally engaged literature produced between the 1950s and 1990s in Central America, I elucidate how ecological paradigms shifted in the face of North American military, economic, and environmental intervention. The cases of the CIA-led Guatemalan coup in 1954, the Sandinista victory in Nicaragua in 1979, and the Mayan genocide of the 1980s constitute rallying points around which Central American authors renegotiate how humans interact with the environment. Their literary output encapsulates the varied historical and environmental results of anthropogenesis in both Western and indigenous cultures. Authors restructure the political ecology of their respective countries and the fundamental place of humans in nature. Their works reflect changes in environmental history, anti-capitalism, ecotourism, genocide, and indigeneity outside of traditional binary definitions of the Cold War that showcase the inherent ii contradictions in the capitalist promise of modernization and human prosperity.

A HISTORY OF THE PHENOMENON OF THE MARAS OF EL SALVADOR, 1971-1992 Vogel Vladimir Castillo, B.A. Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2014 APPROVED: Roberto Calderón, Major Professor Sandra Mendiola-García, Committee Member J. Todd Moye, Committee Member Richard B. McCaslin, Chair of the Department of History Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Castillo, Vogel Vladimir. A History of the Phenomenon of the Maras of El Salvador, 1971- 1992. Master of Arts (History), May 2014, 86 pp., bibliography, 75 titles. This thesis grounds its examination of the maras of El Salvador in the historical past (1971-1992) rather than the present, which constitutes a departure from current scholarship on the subject. This thesis revises our current understanding of the emergence and development of maras in El Salvador through the recovery, insertion and examination of key local events, conditions, and historical actors of the 1970s and 1980s. From signifying friendship and camaraderie prior to the late 1980s, the maras increasingly became the target of public concern and Salvadoran security forces over the course of the 1980. By the late 1980s the maras increasingly became associated with criminal activity in Salvadoran society and popular culture. To document these changed conditions, this thesis relies extensively on previously untapped and ignored primary sources: newspapers and oral history interviews.
