In 1910, Deering bought for 40,000 pesetas the Hospital de San Juan Baptista. And it was renamed Maricel. The simple building and other houses around it were transformed into a luxurious residence, with gothic windows and other elements acquired throughout Spain. For nine years, Deering installed his great art collection. Charles Deering, who spent several seasons in Maricel, became a benefactor of Sitges, helping in the development of the new hospital, offering donations to the parochial church and various social works, achievements for which he declared the Adopted Son in 1916. The neo-Romanesque chapel, with a single nave, has a valuable altarpiece from the 16th century bought by Deering for Maricel in 1910 and donated to the hospital for the 1912 inauguration. Next to the hospital, is a vineyard of 3,500 square meters where the famous grapes of malvasia are grown. Its wine fund the hospital activities. In the cellar of the foundation, there are 16,000 bottles of four varieties of wine made with grapes of malvasia.
