The UAB men’s golf team is fortunate to have a range of top-notch golf courses in and around the Birmingham area which provide excellent settings for practice and tournaments.

Shoal Creek Course: 7,114 yards, par 72 Head Pro: Eric Williamson Shoal Creek stands as the living definition of “classic.” Each hole is framed by an elegant tree line and presents subtle use of slopes and contours that can be mastered only by those with a carefully planned strategy and the ability to execute. The bent grass greens are challenging and demand imag- ination at its best. This design has been the host of two PGA Championships and one U.S. Amateur Championship. Ranked 61st in the nation, this picturesque golf course is one of the Blazers favorites and home Shoal Creek is ranked 61st in the nation. to the UAB-hosted Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in the fall.

Old Overton Course: 6,968 yards, par 71 Head Pro: Jim Brotherton Opened in 1993, Old Overton was named best new golf course in just one year later by Golf Digest. This Tom Fazio and design is the complete golfing experience for every type of golfer. With tree-lined fairways and rolling hills, each and every shot demands a high level of precision, as even the slightest slip can easily result in a quickly escalating score.

Greystone Course: 6,900 yards, par 72 Head Pro: Steve Smith Opened in 1991, Greystone is a 36-hole facility with bent grass greens, bermuda fairways and excellent practice facilities. This championship course demands accuracy and precision as golfers must think their way through holes that demand strategic tee shots and calculated approaches. Greystone is the host of the Greystone Men’s The Founders Course was the site of the Bruno’s Memorial Classic, a former stop on the PGA Champions Tour. Invitational.

Limestone Springs Course: 6,987 yards, par 72 Head Pro: Simon Coles Limestone Springs is shaping up to be one of the best golf courses in Birmingham. With bermuda fairways and Crenshaw creeping bent grass greens, this course is designed to challenge even the most avid golfer.

Vestavia Course: 6,871 yards, par 72 Head Pro: Allen Austin After a whole new renovation, Vestavia Country Club has a whole new look to it. This course emphasizes accuracy off the tee with its tree-lined fair- ways and gently rolling hills. Missing left or right often means disaster. The key to playing well at Vestavia is creativity, accuracy and plenty of imagina- tion. Old Overton requires a high-level of precision. Oxmoor Valley Course: 6,631 yards, par 72 Head Pro: Eric Pigman Sculpted from the peaks and valleys of the Appalachians, Oxmoor Valley offers scenic forests, numerous creeks and challenging elevation changes. The Ridge Course, with its rolling fairways, heavy tree cover and precipitous 150-foot elevation changes, is incredibly photogenic. As a reminder of the site's former use as mining land, the green at the par 5 twelfth is buttressed by a shelf of exposed shale rock.

Timberline Course: 6,850 yards, par 72 Head Pro: Joe Kruse This Jerry Pate design features natural areas and multiple bunkers for chal- lenging golf. It features an exciting par-4 and rolling hills for excellent course-management excercise. The course is located 30-minutes south of Birmingham and is one of UAB’s favorite courses to play. Oxmoor Valley is along the famous Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. 4 2007-08 UAB MEN’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE 2007-08 BLAZERS

26 2007-08 UAB MEN’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE UAB AT A GLANCE

In the 1960s, a small extension center of the University of Alabama embarked on a mission to become a center of quality education. During the next four decades, tremendous strides in education and medicine transformed this hub of learning into an independent campus known as the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Today UAB is one of the country’s premier public universities, with approxi- mately 17,000 students. UAB’s influence reaches into every facet of the Birmingham community, improving the lives of residents through innovative health care, education, and active community involvement. As an educator, a campus encompassing 82 city blocks thrives with opportunities to gain a real- world education in the arts and humanities, business, dentistry, education, engineering, health professions, medicine, natural sciences and mathematics, nursing, optometry, public health, and social and behavioral sciences.

Bharat Soni, one of America’s top computing experts and a UAB engineering professor, has cre- ated a high-performance virtual reality lab on campus.

In health care, UAB is a world leader in research, patient care and innovative biomedical educational programs. In cutting-edge research centers, UAB scientists are seeking cures for conditions such as cancer and heart disease. In addition, many UAB physicians are consistently ranked among the nation’s best by national publications. UAB’s impact on the community is quite obvious. As Alabama’s largest single employer, more than 52,900 jobs in Birmingham are UAB-related, including approx- imately 18,000 UAB employees. Plus, UAB energizes the local, state, and regional economies with more than $2.9 billion of UAB-related business volume.

A University Challenging the Future • An impressive 91.3 percent of UAB’s 1,776 faculty members hold an academic or professional doctorate in their fields.

• With a student-faculty ratio of 18 to 1, UAB’s world-renowned visionar- ies and problem-solvers share their expertise and experience in the class- room and lead others to the brink of discovery. UAB enriches Birmingham’s cultural • A young, dynamic, exciting place, UAB tackles the problems of today landscape through a diversity of people and offers a preview of the world of tomorrow. • The most recent edition of The Best Doctors in America includes 234 UAB physicians; this includes only one percent of all physicians in the country. • Seven UAB Hospital specialty programs (rheumatology, heart and heart surgery, gynecolo- gy, kidney disease, cancer, orthopedics, and respiratory disorders) are among the nation’s top 50 — five are in the top 25 — of the 16 categories evaluated at America‘s 5,189 hospi- tals in 2006 by U.S. News & World Report. With its seven ranked programs, UAB Hospital was one of only 176 hospitals, or about 3 percent of U.S. institutions studied — and the only hospital in Alabama — to make the magazine‘s “Best Hospital’s” List. • In recognition accorded to fewer than 200 of the nation’s health care provider organiza- tions, UAB Hospital in 2006 was recertified as a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). UAB Hospital is one of only 17 in the Southeast, and the only one in Alabama to attain the prestigious Magnet designation for its nursing excellence.. • UAB is a national leader in organ transplantation. Its organ survival rates are among the best in the nation, patient survival rates exceed the national average, and waiting time for transplant is among the shortest nationally.

• The UAB School of Health Professionas provides advanced opportunities and is one of the largest schools of its types in the nation, with 21 innovative programs at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degree levels within six departments: Critical Care, Diagnostic and Therapeautic Sciences; Health Services Administration; Nutrition Sciences; Occupational Therapy; and Physical Therapy. U.S. News & World Report ranks several SHP programs among the nation‘s top 25.

• UAB Kirklin Clinic is a state-of-the-art, full-service clinic that furnishes a full range of adult outpatient care. Housing more than 25 specialties and more than 700 specialists under one roof, UAB Kirklin Clinic conveniently provides in-house diagnostic testing, surgery services, a pharmacy and educational seminars.

UAB Associate Athletics Director for Academic Support Services Danez Marrable and her staff are responsible for oversee- ing the educational development and progress towards graduation for all student-athletes.

The academic support staff acts as the liasion between the stu- dent-athlete and the academic communities and insures that stu- dent-athletes comply with academic rules established by the uni- versity, the NCAAand Conference USA. The Academic Center for Athletes (AC4A) program wants to ensure that student-athletes succeed to their highest academic abil- ity and that any possible educational disadvantages resulting from their participation in intercollegiate athletics are offset. Inherent in the program is the philosophy that student-athletes take responsi- bility for their own growth and development while receiving max- imum support. The academic unit’s goals are to prepare student- athletes for viable careers, to assist them in securing degrees and to produce responsible citizens.

The AC4A is located in the Bell Building across from Bartow Arena and is within walking distance from all campus dormitories. Renovations to the center are currently underway and are slated to be completed in June of 2008. The project was made possible by a generous donation from Don and Marsha Hire.

The AC4A has a computer lab, which has the latest technolo- gy to meet all the student-athletes’ needs, private and group study rooms, study halls, meeting rooms, a writing lab and math lab.

The computer lab is available to all student-athletes and is staffed by a qualified computer support assistant. The computer lab offers wireless, high-speed connection to the Internet as well as access to all programs available from other academic units on cam- pus.

The AC4A advisors, in conjunction with specific major advi- sors, work with student-athletes on necessary requirements for their chosen degree. The AC4A advisors also help plan class schedules, keeping in mind academic standing, practice, travel and competition schedules.

In cooperation with faculty members, the AC4A advisors peri- odically review the academic performance and class attendance of all student-athletes. The staff monitors the progress of each stu- dent-athlete toward graduation. All academic progress informa- tion is shared with the athletes, coach, and Athletics Director.

A special orientation program helps student-athletes in their transition from high school to college. They learn what is expect- ed of them, what the university’s responsibility to them is and what adjustments they will need to make in order to succeed. The orientation provides an introduction to UAB during which stu- dent-athletes’ questions are answered by coaches, faculty, admin- istrators and other students.

UAB Chip-In Club/Shoal Creek Intercollegiate

Shoal Creek Intercollegiate Shoal Creek made a triumphant return to top-level college golf during the 2005-06 season when it and UAB combine to host the 2005 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate. The 2007-08 cam- paign marks the third consecutive year of the prestigious event, which typically features some of the top teams and several of the top individual men's college golfers in the nation.

"We can't be more excited to welcome some of the best teams and golfers to Birmingham and to Shoal Creek year-in and year-out," UAB head men's golf coach Alan Kaufman said. "It was important for me and for us at UAB to make this first Shoal Creek event a memorable one so the momentum would carry us forward and allow this to become one of the annual fall tournaments people are clamoring to play."

Shoal Creek, host to the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championship and 1986 U.S. Amateur, has been without a high-level men's college golf event since the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate moved 11 years ago. Kaufman, a Shoal Creek member, wanted to bring a top-tier collegiate tournament back to the course, long respected as one of golf's finest jewels in the South.
