LeftLion Magazine Issue 30 contents August - September 2009 editorial Hello and welcome to another issue of Nottingham’s favourite culture and events magazine! This is a special edition for us, as it marks five years of putting mags out onto the streets of Nottingham. It’s been quite a journey for us; we started out as a group of twentysomethings hacking away in a flat above a cob shop on Mansfield Road. Since then we’ve moved a few times, as well as getting a bit older and becoming a key focal point for creativity in this beautiful city. We celebrate the birthday of this magazine by guiding you through the art you will have seen on our covers over the last half decade, created by some of the very best artists in the city. Hopefully you will see some of the progression we have made in that time on this issue’s centrespread. By the time you read this, the football season will be about to kick off. Fortunes have been steadily rising 07 11 15 at Forest since they finally got promoted back into the Championship the season before last. WARDS: WOLLATON EAST AND LENTON ABBEY, ITEM NO: WOLLATON WEST WOLLATON AND LENTON ABBEY AREA COMMITTEE 9 MARCH 2006 REPORT OF CHIEF RISK OFFICER NOTTINGHAM CITY COUNCIL RESIDENTS SURVEY 2005 - IMPLICATIONS FOR WOLLATON AND LENTON ABBEY AREA COMMITTEE 1.0 SUMMARY 1.1 The report highlights the key Area 7 results of the 2 nd Market and Opinion Research International (MORI) Nottingham Resident Survey undertaken in October/November 2005. It provides robust data that reflects the perceptions of Area 7 residents on key quality of life, anti social behaviour and corporate satisfaction indicators/figures 2.0 RECOMMENDATIONS IT IS RECOMMENDED that the Committee: − Note the Area 7 findings − Note that Council Departments will analyse the data presented by Mori and integrate them into their service planning processes for 2006/2007 − Note that information from the survey is to be used to develop the Community Plan. 3 BACKGROUND INFORMATION 3.1 In October/November 2005 MORI undertook Nottingham’s 2 nd Residents survey. The Council worked in partnership with One Nottingham who wished to engage city residents as part of the safer and stronger communities’ strand of Neighbourhood Renewal, focussing on local communities’ quality of life. In total 2,033 City residents took part of these 207 are Area 7 residents. 3.2 It is worth noting that the survey dealt with residents’ perceptions at the time the survey was conducted rather than facts . Residents’ perceptions, therefore, may not accurately represent the level and quality of services that are currently provided in Area 7 and Nottingham as a whole. One of the challenges will be to link these perceptions with other data that is available, for example, performance indicators or other measurements of service quality.

  • The Media, Poverty and Public Opinion in the UK
The media, poverty and public opinion in the UK John H. McKendrick, Stephen Sinclair, September 2008 Anthea Irwin, Hugh O’Donnell, Gill Scott and Louise Dobbie How the media in the UK represents poverty and its effect on wider public understanding. The media fulfi ls an important role in shaping, amplifying and responding to public attitudes toward poverty. This study, part of the ‘Public Interest in Poverty Issues’ research programme, explores the role of national, local and community media in refl ecting and infl uencing public ideas of poverty and welfare. The research aimed to: • compare representations of poverty across different contemporary UK media; • identify the principal factors and considerations infl uencing those involved in producing media coverage of poverty; • understand how UK media representations of poverty relate to the public’s understanding of poverty, and any differences between the responses of different groups; • identify examples of effective practice in communicating poverty issues to the public and derive transferable lessons from these. The researchers analysed coverage of poverty in news reporting; looked at how the same poverty news story was reported across different news outlets; reviewed how poverty was presented across different genres of television programme; interviewed key informants involved in the production, placement and presentation of poverty coverage in the mass media and explored public interpretations and responses to media coverage of poverty through focus groups/ workshops. www.jrf.org.uk Contents
