has exceptionally good steam bending properties. In Europe it is the most widely used timber for producing bent parts, e.g. for furniture. No problems are reported with surface coating. However, the very dense surface requires adequate fusibility (low viscosity) of the applied coating materials. The wood takes stains very well and can be adapted to almost any desired tone. Durability The wood is not durable (perishable) but is very permeable for preservation. Seasoning The wood dries well but is classified as moderately refractory, as the tendency to check, split and distort is considerable. Stacking and drying must be done with utmost care. To relax tensions and Beech boule to change the colour to a saturated light reddish brown, the timber is frequently steamed before seasoning. French manufacturers are therefore now producing square-edged timbers in long length from selected boards that have been kiln dried before edging”. This beech expert adds that drying before edging provides a much higher yield for manufacturers, as the whole of the raw material they are buying is usable without risk of twist or dimension shrink. With the 8th edition of INDIAWOOD drawing closer (21-25 February, 2014), the mattress industry and furniture upholstery segment are watching the build-up closely. Since INDIAWOOD-2014 will also showcase the latest in mattress and upholstery manufacturing, those seeking more information can contact the show organizers, PDA Trade Fairs, Bangalore. By way of introduction, WoodNews initiated a series of exploratory articles in its July-August issue, where we featured two prominent inner-spring mattress manufacturers in India. In this issue, our industry-veteran guest writer dwells on the process of mattress manufacturing, as well as the machinery involved in this ever-expanding business. And this comes from the horse’s mouth: “increasingly, many (upholstery manufacturers) are expressing an interest in diversifying into the mattress industry”! Already major woodworking machinery manufacturers from Germany, Italy, China, Turkey and Taiwan have booked space for India’s largest woodworking trade show. Important timber trade missions from the United States, Canada, France and Malaysia will also be at hand for information, guidance and business. Indian industry touches US$708 million, expanding by 6% annually, double the global growth rate STITCHING

By Danny (Dinesh Kumar) The international market for popular mattress styles, such as up inner-spring and foam core beds, is experiencing a resurging growth. Though North America consumes the greatest percentage of the US$3+ billion international mattress market, emerging economies, such as India, are prime opportunities for mattress producers. The growth of personal wealth in such locations is creating dreams! a strong demand for more personal comfort products like mattresses. Though retail values of mattresses are much higher, a recent international mattress industry report estimated the international trade value to be approximately US$3.2 billion with export-to-consumption rate only being 14%. India has been among the top growth countries for the past decade and as personal incomes continue to rise, this market is expected to expand well beyond the current US$708 million. These expectations are reflected in the predicted mattress growth rate in India to expand to 6% annual growth by 2014. That is nearly double the global growth rate. The imports and exports are nearly equal at only 1%, so nearly all the current mattress market in India is relatively local. That is good for India-based mattress entrepreneurs because they have opportunities both locally and abroad since there are great export opportunities, and new mattress compression packaging machines make this easier than in the past. Another appealing point: mattress producers also typically enjoy higher profit margins compared to other furniture products. Material costs are reasonable, the assembly process

is relatively simple and available machinery makes mass production very easy. Range of machines Mattress manufacturers can be as vertically integrated as they like, depending on how much of the supply chain they wish to control, and machinery is available to assist every aspect of production. Like most industries, manufacturers with great volumes tend to be more vertically integrated, absorbing more infrastructure costs in exchange for greater long-term profit margins and better control of cost of goods. Smaller mattress producers typically buy core materials from suppliers and assemble the products with industrial sewing equipment, fastening tools and packaging machines. Some mattress manufacturers are little more than foam producers, making beds as an avenue to sell their foam product. They formulate the foam, pour the foam, wrap Quilting it in fabric ticking and ship it to the mattress stores. Though the spring units are crucial for body support, For the purposes of this article we’ll cover the most most mattresses also include a layer of foam for comfort, common mattress production equipment for inner- fiber or a combination of similar materials between the spring style beds. There are four major areas of mattress springs and a person’s body. The most common mattress support system is inner- These quilt machines are highly specialized to handle springs. Mattress borders, the sides of the mattress, are commonly thinner quilted materials and cut into narrow strips of material with a border slitter behind another quilt machine. Sewing machines Depending on consumer style demands, mattress construction can be very simple or much more complex, and there are many specialized sewing machines to satisfy each desired feature. A typical, low-cost basic bed will consist of a quilted top and bottom and a quilted border surrounding the mattress core. Mattress product value may increase with the addition of attached handles, decorative ribbons, sewn mattress and pillow-top gussets. But nearly every mattress sewing department consists of the following minimum equipment: • Serger or flanger • Quilt repair and machine • Border closer • Binder machine • Tape edging machine

Remember, the border material is also a quilted product, so ideally, it should also be serged on a border serge machine, but some choose not to, since those edges will have less material at risk. Nevertheless, border sections must be cut to size from the roll of material they currently consist of.
