1 R ECYCLING DIRECTORY FOR MCHENRY COUNTY This directory is dedicated to the memory of Lou Marchi, educator and environmentalist, who was an avid recycler himself and believed that we should strive toward 100% recycling. Shortly before his death, he and his wife Margaret left an endowment to McHenry County Col- lege to establish an institute that would promote recycling as an alternative waste disposal so- lution. The Lou Marchi Total Recycling Institute was established at McHenry County College in August of 1994.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:

We wish to acknowledge the generous help we received from: McHenry County College Con- tinuing Education Department; McHenry County Department of Planning & Development; McHenry County Defenders; McHenry County Schools Environmental Education Program of the McHenry County Regional Office of Education; Kane County Department of Environ- mental Management; and Will County Land Use Department, Waste Services Division.

This directory is a publication of the Institute. We welcome your comments or suggestions.

HOW TO USE THIS DIRECTORY:

Materials to be recycled or reused are listed alphabetically in the RECYCLE WHAT WHERE sec- tion. All listings presented in this handout are believed to be as accurate and up-to-date as possible. Since information in the listings is subject to change, the reader is advised to call to confirm infor- mation.

This directory also contains information regarding drop-off sites and curbside collections through- out the county. Most commonly recycled materials (e.g. aluminum cans, and , tin cans and newspaper) will be recycled at those locations. All McHenry County drop-off recycling locations are listed under drop-off sites.

The Lou Marchi Total Recycling Institute in no way endorses the businesses or organizations listed in this directory.

FREECYCLE Besides the recycling and reusing opportunities in this directory, FREECYCLE is available online to match people locally who have things to get rid of with people who can use them. It is available free to individuals and businesses in McHenry County and around the world. It helps keep “stuff” out of the landfill and helps lessen our impact on the earth. Check it out at www.freecycle.org.

Landscape Waste Burning Restrictions Open burning of landscape waste is allowed at any time of the year if the fire is at least 500 feet from a neighboring residential dwelling.

The open burning of landscape waste, which is less than 500 feet from a neighboring residential dwelling in unincorporated areas of McHenry County is allowed, but subject to the following conditions: ÒÉ only on Saturday and Sunday during the months of October, November, April and May; between dawn and dusk; and must be at least 30 feet from any structure and constantly attended until the fire is extinguished. Provisions must also be made to prevent the fire from spreading.

If you live in an incorporated area, check with your local officials regarding restrictions.

Landscape waste is defined as all accumulation of grass or shrubbery cuttings, leaves, tree limbs, and other materials accumulated as a result of the care of lawns. Christmas trees are excluded from this definition; they are considered rubbish.

The Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) of the McHenry County Planning and Develop- ment Department is responsible for the enforcement of all open burning of landscape waste regulations under the BOCA National Fire Prevention Code. Enforcement action, for alleged violations of the open burning of landscape waste regulations, will be initiated by the CEO upon receipt of a complaint from the general public.

Call (815) 334-4560 with any questions regarding these regulations or to report illegal burning.
