Spring has finally arrived with its usual sunshine and showers but the gardeners will hope the last of the very cold weather has left us. The May blossom is here and Lilac is showing its elegant purple and white spikes.

April brought some notable celebrations with the Queen's 90th birthday and the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. These events continue over the coming weeks and Prescot on Merseyside is particularly celebrating its connection with William Shakespeare. Shakespeare .... Prescot ??? Not the usual combination. Read more on page 15.

Are you celebrating something special in 2016? We'd love to feature it in the Highways and Byways. Contact details below.

The Tale of the Reclaimed Fireplace Mantel Shelf.

This week saw the installation of bench seating in the three bus stops at the Cross, , and . The Parish Council having had quotes of £300 and above for each shelter took up the offer from a local Councillor to make and install them.

Two of the bench type seats were made from reclaimed mahogany hardwood which served as a fireplace top mantel shelf in his home many years ago. Reclaiming is good! The cost of the three installations was just over £100.

Page 4 & DISTRICT PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Based on the Parish Council Meetings held on 11th April and 9th May

The Chairman asked for all present to observe a two minute silence to mark the passing of Cllr Brian Ancliff.

Open Forum (April Meeting) Steve Yandell / Ceris Timms – Trafford Mill It is hoped that very soon there will be a major announcement about actions that have been taken by the Trustees in relation to Trafford Mill. The Mill is a facility that can be visited when there is staff on site e.g. on a Thursday. The Mill will be open on the 5th June as part of Open Farm Sunday.

Mr Martin Preston / Mr Steve Allman Active members of Frack Free Mickle Trafford Frack Free Mickle Trafford (FFMT) intend to carry out a Parish wide survey relating to local issues regarding Fracking and Unconventional Gas Extraction (UGE) in the near future. The Chairman of the Parish Council advised that the results would be of interest to the Parish Council but the Council would not partake in the preparation of the questionnaire. He was not willing to ask prepared questions at a forthcoming Ineos presentation.

Cllr Nicholas re-iterated the comments made by the Chairman that the Parish Council wish to remain totally neutral on this matter in order that when presented with any Planning Application on this matter they can all state that they have not pre-determined anything on this matter.

Mr Roger Brace Mr Brace asked about Parish Council publicity and the website in particular. Cllr Taylor advised that the website domain name had now been purchased and he was in the process of sourcing a host so that the website could become operational again following discussion with a local website developer. The website will be updated as soon as possible. All basic information such as meeting minutes and dates will then be bought up to date. Initially the webmaster (Cllr Taylor) will have responsibility for the site but in the longer term the publicity for the parish Council may become the responsibility of a particular councillor.

Open Forum (May Meeting) A Bridge Trafford Resident The meeting was made aware that there was a problem with Japanese Knotweed at a property in the village. Action has been sought through the Clerk to the Parish Council and the Ward Councillor. As the infested area is private land, CWaC have advised that they are unable to take action. Attempts are being made to contact the landowner.

Page 5 POLICE UPDATE (April Meeting) PC Boulton described recent incidents: Attempted entry at a property in Littleton.

Break in at a rural dwelling on Wicker lane A locker was broken into and a wallet stolen from the Spa area of the Double Tree hotel Bogus window cleaners? Residents are advised to check previous clients of these types of trades to confirm their validity and ensure their work is of a quality A Police Surgery was held outside the Post Offices of and Mickle Trafford. on Tuesday 19th April at Guilden Sutton 1200hrs & M Trafford 1300hrs. A Member of the Public advised PC Boulton of excessive mobile phone usage whilst driving on the A56 The Chairman then closed the Open Forum and the Council Meeting began.

This summary In Highways and Byways is largely based on the May Meeting minutes but incorporates some items discussed in April and not updated in May.

Election of Chairman (Parish Council) and of Vice-Chairman (Parish Council)

Glen Nicholas was the only nominee for Chairman and was duly elected. Phil Blackman, Margaret Parker, and Roger Parkin were proposed and jointly elected as Vice Chairmen. See Photos on Page 22.

Council Business. The meeting continued with the agenda items which required Councillors to approve or note the minutes of the various meetings that comprised Council business in the last two months. Items involved are simply listed here as in most instances their approval did not stimulate or warrant further discussion: Parish Council Minutes. Planning Committee Gowy Liaison Annual Parish Meeting Income & Expenditure Accounts

It is noted in the Gowy Liaison Minutes that the current landfill licence expires in November 2016 and that a new Planning application is being prepared.

Councillors Special Duties List 2016/17 This matter was deferred to the next meeting when Councillors will be assigned to the various tasks carried out by the Council. Community Opportunity - a presentation Cllr Sharpe Cllr Sharpe described an informal discussion which she, together with Cllrs Parkin and Blackman, had held with a Lawn Tennis Club representative about the opportunity to develop parts of the site on School Lane that are surplus to HLTC

Page 6 requirements and potentially available for purchase or to share.

Such “Green Spaces” could provide valuable facilities for the community. The presentation prompted a lively debate and deliberations suggested the Queen’s Jubilee Field as another site that might be developed. A motion was approved that a group be formed to open discussions with HLTC and also consider other areas that may be available and the scope or type of development envisaged. Members comprising that group would be decided at the June Parish meeting. Pavements in the Parish It was agreed that councillors would report areas of concern to the Clerk who would alert CWAC to the problem. Formation of Finance Committee The case was made to reinstate a Finance committee to meet on a monthly basis at 6.30pm on the first Monday of each month. Composition of this committee wil be resolved at the June Parish Council meeting. Village Hall Trustee report Cllr Nicholas reported that the new front door had now been installed. Cllr Spence stated that there were still noise issues for local residents but this had improved. Cllr Nicholas advised that all users were made aware of the problem.

Highways Issues The Clerk continues to progress a list of complaints around our roads and pavements. Some of these issues can be reported directly to CWAC through their website but, in the case of no response, the Clerk will assist. Matters raised at the discretion of the Chairman An E-mail from a resident asked what the Parish Council could do about the amount of dog poo that was present at the Gowy Woodland Park. The meeting noted that it was FCC Environmental who were responsible for the maintenance of this site but ultimately it was up to individual dog owners to collect the poo and place it in the receptacles provided. This matter is regularly discussed at meetings of the Gowy Liaison committee. The same resident asked that the Parish Council look into the replacement of some of the equipment in the Queens Diamond Jubilee Park. Cllr Parker advised that there was some money available to be used for recreational facilities.

Date and time of Next Parish Council Meeting Monday 13th June 2016 at the Village Hall @ 6.30pm

Page 11 Mickle Trafford Mill Trust

Hello from all at Mickle Trafford Mill Trust! We have been enjoying the sunshine and the garden has been enjoying the rain but we have had some random bursts of sleet and hail….enough to make a rainbow over Trafford Mill.

We have been working hard as Directors of the Board to obtain Charitable Status which is a very important step of progress for us. We trust that the Charities Commission will see the good work we do within our community and support us in this move forward; despite it being a lengthy process. We are grateful to Kevin Janes of CWAC Social Enterprise for his help and support in our aim to complete a successful application. Once this has been achieved we will be looking for funding for the next stage of the restoration process. We have the support of the Architectural Heritage Fund who are guiding us through these stages and helping us to bring the mill to life.

On 14th & 15th May we are open for the National Mills Weekend and again on the 5th June for Open Farm Sunday . If you are visiting the mill, please book tours using the details provided and please be aware that, because the mill is currently in the restoration process, tour access may be restricted. We are sorry to say that we do not have access to the building for those with limited mobility or wheelchair users.

We have had lots of social media interest recently so thank you to all our Facebook and Twitter followers. This is a true reward for having to spend six hours on Facebook and constantly remembering to Tweet about the cute springer Flash every two seconds. Please keep following us on social media for updated information about Mickle Trafford Mill Trust and what is happening at the mill. I do believe the Facebook album of mill dog Flash’s Diets has been a local favourite topic!

The community projects have been so much fun recently working with young people carrying out horticultural and green woodworking tasks to making charcoal and creating habitats for nature. All these fulfil educational aims for school and volunteer awards like Duke of Edinburgh. The Thursday Community Day felt the sun recently after much toil in the kitchen garden preparing land for planting out seedlings of beans, squashes, pumpkins, onions, brassicas, herbs and border flowers and sowing carrots, parsnips with spinach and lettuce. Our poly tunnel is rich with locally donated chicken manure which has been maturing even further into the soil, and is now just perfect for tomatoes.

Please do not forget that mill produce is available for purchase on a donation only basis and we have a range of items on offer: cider, charcoal, trays of vegetable seedlings and plants – all donations welcome and all proceeds go towards the community project. Please contact us to place an order, you can collect from us at the mill or The Grange Farm and in some circumstances we can deliver locally for free.

On a closing note, Mickle Trafford Mill Trust would like to give a heartfelt thanks to our warm reception from the Parish Council at their last meeting. We value their support and are proud to be represented by Cllr Les Bartley and Cllr Margaret Parker who have demonstrated great commitment to the preservation of Trafford Mill over the years.

Page 14 Shakespeare on Merseyside

In Elizabethan times, the Prescot Playhouse built in Prescot near Liverpool was the only purpose-built indoor theatre outside of London. Built in the 1590s, but destroyed in the early 17th century, the exact appearance of this original Shakespearean theatre remains unknown because no plans have survived. It is believed that William Shakespeare may have used the theatre in Prescot to debut several of his most famous plays.

Now on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, plans are afoot to recreate a period theatre in Merseyside to celebrate its often neglected place in the history of the Bard. The Shakespeare North Trust has said it would be the first British theatre purpose-built with education at its core, with up to 100 students a year potentially studying and practising Shakespeare’s work. Visiting companies and exhibitions will also be welcomed. A site is available and significant funding has now been secured.

A welcome boost for the Arts outside of London.

Open Farm Sunday Open Farm Sunday in association with LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) takes place on 5th June and our event runs from 10:00 until 16:00. All are welcome at the farm and at Mickle Trafford Mill where there will be lots going on and something for everyone.

There will be guided farm tours with David Rowlands and Pat O’ Brien, when you can see what goes on behind the hedgerows and view the Red Poll cattle and this year’s new calves. Tours of Mickle Trafford Water Mill will take place at regular intervals throughout the day, together with activities for all the family in the kitchen garden. Guilden Sutton Scouts are providing a barbecue complete with Red Poll Steak Burgers, and there will be a local produce fair offering our own beef and other locally produced food and goods in the meeting room at the farm. Sean O’ Brien is on hand to explain the intricacies of bee keeping, and there will be the opportunity to find out more about fracking in our area from people who know. You can wander the footpath network and follow our farm trail around the mill. There is limited parking in the farm yard; if you park on the main road outside the gates please ensure that your vehicle is entirely clear of the carriageway. There is no need to book. Simply come and enjoy the day. Full details can be found at www.farmsunday.org Farm Shop Coming Soon Work has begun on our new farm shop which is due to open later this year. It will be fully accessible, and will be stocked chiefly with produce from the farm and from Mickle Trafford Mill and kitchen garden, with other local produce also on offer. It will be situated in the old dairy, which is the section of the main farm building nearest the main road, and includes some of the original fixtures and fittings remaining from when this building was used as a

dairy in the 1920’s.

Page 16 Jones’s Bridge Replacement Murphys successfully replaced the railway bridge off St. Peter’s Way over the Easter weekend, and have left the site and reinstated the land used for access and a compound as grassland. Because the work took place in the Spring, it was not possible to replant the hedge on the corner of Plemstall Lane, and this is scheduled for November once the growing season has ended. Red Poll Cattle The Red Polls are now all out enjoying fresh grass and sunshine, and the cows are giving birth to their new calves. Cows and calves are on the fields around the mill and alongside the . Younger animals are on the fields behind the Shrewsbury Arms, and Pint Pot and the bullocks are between the farm and Plemstall Lane. Six heifers are grazing land at Platts next to the Roman Bridges for Cheshire Wildlife Trust, and a further twenty five are in Lancashire with Lancashire Wildlife Trust on nature reserves at Lunt (near Maghull), Lightshaw (near ) and Bryn (near Wigan). Those at Lunt have been joined by four Red Poll heifers from Rice Lane City Farm in Liverpool. All these reserves are open to the public and well worth a visit.

Brian Ancliff Brian was born in Nottinghamshire, the eldest of 4 children. His father was a steam engine driver and he boasts of being on the "Mallard " with his dad. He started work as a GPO telephone engineer and met Lilian, who was a telephonist and they quickly made a connection! They were married at age 21, moving several times in connection with his work as an Electrical Engineer with the power stations, having gained his degree at Aston University. Moving to Chester 41 years ago he took up the position of estate manager with the NHS. Retired, he went on to work for himself until aged 78. He was a man of many talents including painting and converting a coach house into a home. He loved his dogs, was a member of the village bowling club and an active member of the parish council. He was always happy to help and could turn his hand to anything. In 2000, along with his wife Lilian, Brian introduced well dressing to the village, designing the pictures, collecting the clay, building the frames and soaking them in paddling pools. The frames were filled with flowers and natural things to create beautiful floral pictures. Brian and Dave Sanders made the metal arch above St Plegmund's well which can be seen on your way to St Peters church and it is still there today. The annual well dressing contin- ued in the village until 2013, a tradition that helped to create camaraderie and fun in the village . A special man who's talents will be greatly missed

Brian and Lilian have 2 daughters, 6 grandchildren, and almost 4 great grandchildren all of whom loved him dearly.

Mickle Trafford & District W. I.

In April David Cummings talked to us about his visits to the Land of the Midnight Sun and showed some truly spectacular photographs of the area. For me and for other members he evoked memories of our own delightful trips to the area.

In May after indulging in fish, chips and peas we got down to the business of the evening: the resolutions to be put to the National W. I. Conference in June. This year there were two resolutions to be considered.

The first was “To call upon HM government and the NHS to provide facilities to enable carers to stay with people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia that have been admitted to hospital”. We have all heard stories of people not having access to help and it was an evocative subject which lead to a lively debate.

The second was “The W.I. calls on all supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to avoid food waste by passing surplus food on to charities, thus helping to address the issue of increasing food poverty in the UK”. A subject we have all heard a lot about this year. In France this is the law. We are more than just Jam and Jerusalem, so give us a try. On our 1st June meeting we are going to be Tiptoeing through the Tombstones with Tiny Tillinger so you would be very welcomed to come and join in this experience with us.

The W.I. meets on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7.30 p.m. in the Village Hall. Visitors are welcomed at all of our meetings whether you come for a specific meeting or decide to join us.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me Barbara Harrison on 01244 300822 for further information .
