Moral realism gains plausibility from its truth-conditional semantics because it can explain the meaning of moral judgments on the same basis as ordinary propositions. -
The Concept of Moral Blindness
Jacob Dahl RENDTORFF Roskilde University, Denmark EVIL IN ORGANIZATIONS AND CORPORATIONS: THE CONCEPT OF MORAL BLINDNESS Summary. This paper provides an analysis of evil in corporations and organizations by presenting the concept of moral blindness in relation to business organizations and public administration on the basis of the concept of administrative evil as it has been developed by Hannah Arendt and her followers. After a discussion of the definition of the concept from Hannah Arendt’s to Philip Zimbardo’s social psychology, the paper gives a general definition of the concept as the basis for application and case studies in public administration and private business corporations. Introduction Evil or harm is arguably something that is often caused by the structure of organizations and institutions. We can refer to military institutions, public administrations and private corporations. International Journal of Philosophy N.o 11, Junio 2020, pp. 313-335 ISSN: 2386-7655 Doi: 10.5281/zenodo.3864972 Kantian Transcendental Pessimism and Jamesian Empirical Meliorism SAMI PIHLSTRÖM• University of Helsinki, Finland Abstract Kant’s philosophy was an important background for the pragmatist tradition, even though some of the major classical pragmatists, especially William James, were unwilling to acknowledge their debt to Kant. This essay considers the relation between Kant and James from the perspective of their conceptions of the human condition. In particular, I examine their shared pessimism, employing Vanden Auweele’s (2019) recent analysis of Kant’s pessimism and arguing that this is required by James’s meliorism (which is put forward as a middle-ground option between optimism and pessimism). A comparative inquiry into Kant’s and James’s views on the relation between ethics and religion is provided against this background of their shared philosophical anthropology. They do not merely exemplify virtues or demonstrate a life according to duty, nor are they simply the embodiment of a bunch of moral principles. Rather, they are a unique variety of norm altogether, and, as Aristotle and Confucius illustrate, can be a moral system's most basic norm-that is, the source ofjustification for all other norms, and the source of their own normative justification. To defend these claims I begin, in the first chapter, by discussing the meaning of the word "norm," and then turn to a consideration of the requirements for justifying moral norms. -

Rather, evil is incomprehensible and as radical and banal evil it challenges human rationality. This is indeed the case when we are faced with instrumental and rationalized administrative and political evil. Therefore, we must analyse the banality of evil in politics and in administration in order to understand the concept of evil. -

DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/8QBY6 Introduction: Principled and authentic leadership in all sectors of society, including health, education, business, and finance, requires fundamental shifts in understanding how moral discernment operates. Cultivating leaders who exemplify integrity necessitates grounding in pro-social values, character formation, ethical principles, and contemplative practices that enhance moral decision-making and engaged moral action. The present paper is the product of collaboration between a neuroscientist, an ethicist, and a contemplative exploring issues around leadership, morality, and ethics. It is an exploration on how people in roles of responsibility can better understand how to engage in discernment processes with more awareness and a deeper sense of responsibility for others and themselves. It has been written in a global climate where a practical understanding of how moral decision-making works is essential in this time when there can seem to be an increasing moral vacuum in leadership. The meanings of the words morals and ethics overlap in common usage, though sometimes conflicting distinctions are drawn by philosophers and other scholars. In contrast, in Bauman’s work ethical and moral problems have been recurrent concerns, and can be found in every aspect of his writing from his understanding of the Holocaust to later concerns about the transition of a solid to a liquid form of modernity, consumption, the Other and ambivalence. In his conversations with Michael Hviid Jacobsen and Keith Tester, Bauman explains that the ‘moral law inside me’ as identified by Immanuel Kant ‘is to me an axis around which all other secrets of the human condition rotate’ (Bauman, Jacobsen and Tester 2014:68). Bauman’s ethical concerns are Other directed in that whatever constitutes ethics should be beyond ourselves and our own desires and self-interest. Bauman’s ethical stance was most clearly outlined initially in Postmodern Ethics (1993) and Life in Fragments (1995) in which he identifies the place of contemporary of morality within what appears to be the post ethical, post-legislative postmodern/liquid modern condition. The chapter explores how, what Bauman identifies as the ‘moral law inside me’ and how this shapes our relationship with the Other. -

How Woman Survived 41 Days Adrift in Pacific Ocean Angela Johnson At 34, Richard was more than a decade older than his young American lover, but with his lapis lazuli eyes, golden hair and "exotic" English accent, he meant everything to her. They had already spent a year and a half together on the Pacific, delivering and mending boats. True, the distance involved in the new mission was vast, yet the pair had few concerns, as Oldham Ashcraft later recalled in a series of moving interviews: "I'd been sailing blue water for four years. Together we had 50,000 miles of ocean-sailing under our belts. We hugged, laughed, made love and relaxed into 20 days of paradise." But disastrous reality was less than two weeks away, in the shape of tropical storm Raymond, which "tore out of the blue", hit hurricane force then held its peak intensity for two catastrophic days. Sharp spotted a monster wave approaching the Hazana and ordered Oldham Ashcraft below deck while he secured himself with a safety harness and tried to keep the vessel afloat. Moments later she heard him scream, "Oh my God!" and her world was thrust into darkness. Tossed like a cork on the raging ocean, the yacht had flipped end over end. It was 27 hours before she regained consciousness to an eerie silence and utter devastation. The cabin was half-filled with water, everything inside it smashed or scattered on the floor. Scrambling onto the deck she looked desperately for Sharp but found only wreckage. The boat was all-but destroyed: masts were broken off and the waterlogged sails floated uselessly in the water.
