Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Florida claims top spot in men’s indoor track: At the end of the two-day gamut of ups and downs that is the Division I NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Champion- ships, Florida coach Mike Holloway had a hard time thinking of anything that went wrong for the Gators. “I don’t know,” Holloway said. “The worst thing that happened to me was that I had a stomachache for a couple of days.” There’s no doubt Holloway left the Randal Tyson Track Center feeling better on Saturday night. That’s because a near-fl awless performance by the top-ranked Gators re- sulted in the school’s fi rst indoor national championship. Florida had come close before, fi nishing second three times in Holloway’s seven previous years as head coach. “It’s been a long journey and I’m just so proud of my staff . I’m so proud of my athletes and everybody associated with the program,” Holloway said. “I’m almost at a loss for words; that’s how happy I am. “It’s just an amazing feeling, an absolutely amazing feeling.” Florida began the day with 20 points, four behind host Arkansas, but had loads of chances to score and didn’t waste time getting started. After No. 2 Oregon took the lead with 33 points behind a world-record performance in the heptathlon from Ashton Eaton and a solid showing in the mile, Florida picked up seven points in the 400-meter dash.

Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Oregon sets meet record with 88 points to win fi rst NCAA team title since 1984 -- Track Town is title town. Fueled by three individual national champions June 14, Oregon won its fi rst team title at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships since 1984. The Ducks needed 24 points entering the day to secure the title after winning the NCAA indoor title earlier in the year, and got all that and more with wins from Mac Fleet in the 1,500 meters, Sam Crouser in the javelin and Devon Allen in the 110 hurdles. Tanguy Pepiot (steeplechase) and Arthur Delaney (200) also scored for Oregon, which put up 88 points, a meet record under the current scoring format. Florida was second with 70, after collecting three event titles of its own June 14 at Hayward Field. Oregon’s margin of victory was the largest at the meet since 1994. “If you would have told me at the beginning of the year that 70 points would not have won the NCAA championship, I would have been like, you’re crazy,” Oregon head coach Robert Johnson said. The three individual champions followed Edward Cheserek’s win in the 10,000 meters June 11. In between, the Ducks augmented their score with points elsewhere, includ- ing a 2-3-4 fi nish in the 5,000 June 13 that embodied the team’s “strength in numbers” mantra. “It’s a really special group of guys, a really close team,” Fleet said.

  • Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S
Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Florida ties Texas A&M for title in first championship tie since 1978 -- It couldn’t have ended better for Florida. It couldn’t have ended worse for Texas A&M. Going into the final event Saturday at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Texas A&M men held a nine-point lead ahead of second-place Florida in the team standings. That meant the Aggies would have to finish last in the 4x400 relay and the Gators would have to finish first in order for Texas A&M to lose sole possession of first place. And that’s exactly what happened. Going into the first handoff, Texas A&M runners Ricky Babineaux and Aldrich Bailey Jr. let the baton fall to the track. Babineaux picked it up, and the final three runners ran valiantly to try to catch up, but in the most improbable hypothetical coming to life, Texas A&M indeed finished the race last while Florida’s team crossed the line first. The two Southeastern Conference rivals each scored 53 points for the first shared NCAA title since 1978. Arkansas was third with 46.5. “The goal was for us to win the relay,” Florida coach Mike Holloway said. “I just told the guys, let’s go win the relay. We don’t see it as Texas A&M dropping the baton; we see it as we didn’t drop it. Success is where preparation meets opportunity. We had an opportunity, and we were prepared.” The result keeps the NCAA title in familiar territory: Texas A&M won three consecutive outdoor titles from 2009–11 before Florida won in 2012.

  • Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S
Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Florida edges Arkansas to garner third consecutive national title: Florida’s men got its payback for losing the Southeastern Confer- ence title as they won their third consecutive team crown at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 10. Florida took the meet with 52 points. It was followed by Arkansas (47), Arizona (41), Arizona State (31) and LSU (27). The Gators’ loss to the Razorbacks in the Southeastern Conference championships was fresh in coach Mike Holloway’s mind; he didn’t allow himself to relax until Jeff Demps edged Illinois’ Andrew Riley 6.56 to 6.57 to win the 60-meter dash fi nal. “When Jeff popped up with a victory and Omar (Craddock) was leading in the triple jump, I knew we had 50 (total points),” Holloway said. “And we had (Sean Obinwa) in the 800. I knew Arkansas couldn’t get any better than 47, and I knew we were fi ne. “It was a battle all meet. Arkansas really had a great meet. My hat’s off to coach (Chris) Bucknam and his team and his staff . They nipped us at the SEC meet, and we knew going in it was going to be a battle with them. They do such a great job. We felt like coming into today if we did what we’re capable of doing, we could pull it off .” Folks got a glimpse of that with a dominant fi rst day where all but one of its entrants made it to the fi nals.
