F F I t’ s e! a s rat eason to celeb ROCHESTER PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA 2013–2014 ANNUAL REPORT From the Board Chair and President & CEO

Dear Friends of the RPO:

“Moving Forward” was the inspiration behind the Rochester Philharmonic’s pivotal and productive 2013- 2014 fiscal year. The challenges and opportunities before us gave everyone in the organization a chance to take a hard look not only at where we are and where we’ve been, but also at what is possible.

The Orchestra’s 91st season was brimful of concerts and special occasions described in detail in the following pages of this report, but two major events stand out as proof of the RPO’s forward momentum: the naming of Rochester native Ward Stare as our twelfth Music Director in July; and the Orchestra’s triumphant return to Carnegie Hall in May.

Ward’s appointment is symbolic on many levels. An alumnus of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra whose career advanced rapidly from The Juilliard School to the Lyric of Chicago, and then on to the Aspen Music Festival, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Saint Louis Symphony, Ward now returns to Rochester to lead his hometown orchestra into a new era of artistic excellence and community engagement. As we release this report to coincide with the Annual Meeting, we are less than two weeks away from the official announcement of Ward Stare’s Inaugural Season in 2015-2016. We are thrilled to welcome Ward to the RPO family and can think of no more powerful symbol of an organization that is moving forward.

May 7, 2014, was a proud day for the Rochester Philharmonic and for all of Rochester, as the RPO returned to the world’s most famous concert stage—Carnegie Hall—for the first time in nearly 30 years. Every corner of the organization and the Rochester community rallied to make this enormous undertaking possible: 250 performers on stage and more than 800 Rochesterians in attendance; more than two dozen sponsors; VIP travel packages and special events—all culminating in a dramatic concert performance of Howard Hanson’s rarely performed opera Merry Mount, earning an enthusiastic ovation from the audience and the enthusiastic praise of the local and national press.

Equally important to the organization’s future was the work of the Sustainability Task Force. Following three intensive months of study, their report was presented to the Board in November 2013 and discussed in depth at a Board retreat the following month. The Task Force report offered a detailed analysis of the RPO’s financial condition and laid out specific strategies to move the organization into a position of financial stability. In the spring of 2014, the Board approved a Moving Forward Plan—a detailed action plan focused on improving the organization’s fiscal health.

2 It is clear that this organization needs to change; continuing along the same path will not lead to fiscal stability. The Board and management are aligned in the strategies required, and we are proud of the progress we have made since the Board’s deliberations more than a year ago. Many of these new initiatives involve building internal infrastructure to drive revenue in our marketing and development operations. This year’s independent, non-subscription concerts—from Audra McDonald and Kaddish to La Traviata and Video Games Live™—are other signs of the changes under way at the RPO.

We recognize above all that the RPO is YOUR orchestra. Our audience and our community are central to who we are, where we’ve been in the past 92 years, and where we are heading. As we map out our course for the future, we want to do so with you and the broader community in mind—which is why we value so highly the feedback we receive along the way. In the fall of 2013, we invited our patrons to give us their thoughts on their concert experience. You did—thousands of surveys were returned—and we listened! We are grateful for the direct feedback we’ve received on so many aspects of the RPO, from our programming mix to our box office and front of house operations to the RPO website.

True progress is only possible if we are all working together. In that spirit, we must express our gratitude to the musicians and staff of the RPO, not only for the superb performances they play and produce night after night, but also for the faith they continue to demonstrate in the future of this organization. Once again this season, our players and staff have accepted concessions in wages and benefits to give the Moving Forward Plan time to take root and begin to yield measurable results.

Whether you’re a subscriber or a single-ticket buyer, a donor or a volunteer, a staff member or a musician—or perhaps someone who belongs in several of these categories—we thank you for the role you played in the life of the RPO in the past year. We look forward to moving forward into the RPO’s future with you.

7 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Jeff Tyzik celebrates 20 years Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik celebrated 20 years with the RPO with a weekend of celebratory concerts in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on March 20 and 21. The concerts also featured the talents of legendary trumpeter and bandleader Doc Severinsen of The Tonight Show Band, as well as trumpeter Allen Vizzutti and trombonist Jim Pugh, Tyzik’s fellow Eastman grads and long-time collaborators. Tyzik worked closely with Doc Severinsen on a multitude of projects, including orchestrating many of the great bandleader’s symphony orchestra programs, and producing a GRAMMY Award-winning album, The Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinsen, Vol. 1.

Calling the celebration a “once-in-a-lifetime concert,” the program featured many of Tyzik’s original arrangements, as well as other Pops favorites. Tyzik was appointed Principal Pops Conductor of the RPO in 1994. In addition to his work in Rochester, he is also the Principal Pops Conductor for five other symphony orchestras: Detroit, Dallas, Seattle, Oregon (Portland), and Florida (Tampa/St. Petersburg).

“I never thought it would get to this point,” said Tyzik, of his career success. “Life has exceeded my expectations.”

In his 20 years with the RPO, Tyzik has written more than 200 arrangements, orchestrations, and compositions for orchestra. A consummate musician, Tyzik regularly appears as a guest conductor in the RPO’s classical subscription series. He also has been commissioned to compose original works for orchestra, such as his latest orchestral suite: Images: Musical Impressions of an Art Gallery, which the RPO debuted in 2012 and will perform again in May 2015 with the added talents of Rochester City Ballet and its artistic director and choreographer, On March 23, longtime Jamey Leverett. 9 2 4 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS A “Merry” May at Carnegie After an absence of nearly 30 years, the RPO made a triumphant return to the world’s most famous concert stage on May 7, 2014. The RPO presented a concert performance of Howard Hanson’s opera Merry Mount to an enthusiastic audience of 1,700 (including more than 800 Rochesterians waving souvenir lilac hankies!) at the Spring For Music Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This grand performance featured some 250 performers, combining the talents of guest conductor Michael Christie; a cast of 17 acclaimed soloists and talented area singers; the Eastman-Rochester Chorus, directed by Dr. William Weinert; and Bach Children’s Chorus of Nazareth College, directed by Karla Krogstad.

The Democrat and Chronicle hailed the RPO’s performance of this rarely performed opera with a local connection as “impressive” and “executed brilliantly, with a full and evocative tone that brought Hanson’s profound gifts as orchestrator to the fore.” The New York Times praised Christie for presenting a “well-prepared and meticulously executed performance,” and the New York Classic Review lauded the orchestra and vocalists for a “thrilling” performance that “sent out enormous waves of sounds that shook the rafters yet never seemed like empty bombast.” 1

Hanson’s Merry Mount was chosen in part because 2014 marked the 80th anniversary of the opera’s 1934 stage premiere at the Metropolitan Opera. Additionally, it had been 90 years since Hanson began his tenure as director of the Eastman School of Music in 1924 (and 50 years since his retirement in 1964).

Spring For Music was a four-year festival at Carnegie Hall which Celebratory events surrounding the began in 2011, celebrating and exhibiting the quality and creativity Carnegie Hall concert included a of North American orchestras. 11 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS RPO announces Ward Stare as new music director On July 29, 2014, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Board Chair Dawn Lipson and President & CEO Charles Owens announced Ward Stare as the orchestra’s 12th Music Director in 91 years, effective September 1, 2014. His appointment was formally announced at City Hall in front of orchestra, staff, and board members; local media; arts leaders and RPO donors, sponsors and patrons; and Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren. Additionally, for the first time in RPO history, the event was streamed live online at rpo.org.

“I feel so fortunate to have grown up in Rochester, where I was exposed to the RPO and all the wonderful things that this vibrant community has to offer,” said Stare. “I look forward to giving back by finding new and exciting ways for this world-class orchestra to connect with diverse Rochester audiences.”

A Rochester native and alumnus of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Stare has been described as “one of the hottest young conductors in America” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and “a rising star in the conducting firmament” by theChicago Tribune. He recently completed his tenure as Resident Conductor of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (2008-2012), made his conducting debuts with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and Washington National Opera, and conducted his third major production at Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Stare was the recipient of both the Robert J. Harth Conductor Prize (2006) and the Aspen Conducting Prize (2007) before spending the 2007-08 season as a League of American Orchestras Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has studied conducting with former RPO Music Director David Zinman, János Fürst and Jorma Panula as well as working with Michel Merlet in composition and musical analysis.

“Ward’s astonishing successes early in his career demonstrate his readiness to assume his place in the long line of distinguished conductors who have led the RPO over the past 90 years,” said Owens. “It is clear to me that he will be an inspiring leader, a model collaborator, and a game-changing ambassador for the RPO and for symphonic music, embracing the use of technology to deliver our musical product in ways that will be compelling to a new generation of listeners.”

George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak Company and the world-renowned Eastman School of Music, believed that all Rochester residents could enrich their lives through musical learning, from pre-school through college and beyond.

This dedication to lifelong learning continues today. In 2000, the orchestra named Michael Butterman as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach—the first endowed position of its kind in the country. In the 2013–14 season, Michael Butterman’s title was changed to Principal Conductor for Education and Community Engagement to reflect the Orchestra’s renewed commitment to more deeply engage people from all backgrounds and all walks of life in our community. Also last season, RPO musicians performed four orKIDStra family concerts as well as educational concerts for more than 12,000 Rochester-area schoolchildren.
