Associate Artists working with Will Cotton Taissia Basaria Taissia Basaria was born in 1987 in Mytishchi, Russia. Her work combines the aesthetics of 19th century Romanticism with Russian regionalist painting traditions and using HD technologies of today to illustrate that all is not lost in the fight for the conservation of nature and the people who inhabit it. A big part of the inspiration behind the work was Basaria’s childhood spent next to the Elk Island National Reserve and witnessing firsthand the connection between humankind and the wilderness. Basaria received her BFA from Pratt Institute in 2010. In 2016 she was awarded the Trelex residency in the Amazon region of Peru. In 2017 Basaria returned to the Amazon in collaboration with Tambopata Macaw project to document bird conservation in the region. In 2019 Basaria received her MFA from New York Academy of Art and was awarded the Altos de Chavon teaching residency in the Dominican Republic. Basaria currently lives and works in New York City. Gabe Cortese Born in Key West, Florida, Gabe Cortese is a Florida- based figurative painter. Cortese graduated in 2017 from the University of Central Florida with a BFA and is currently pursuing his MFA at UCF in Studio Art. Interested in intersectional identities and the male body, Cortese’s work is centered around his identity as a queer Latino male. In his work he explores topics of otherness, gender performance and sexual identity. Growing up in “American” culture but becoming intricately immersed in his Puerto Rican and Argentinian roots, he is conscious of the standards of masculinity as each culture defines it.

St. Vincent Leads Off New Season of Austin City Limits Season 44 Premieres October 6 on PBS Austin, TX—October 4, 2018—Austin City Limits (ACL) launches a new season of must-see performances with an epic hour showcasing one of the most compelling figures in contemporary music: innovative art-rock performer St. Vincent. The season premiere airs Saturday, October 6 at 8pm CT/9pm ET opening ACL’s Season 44. The program airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings for times) and full episodes are made available online for a limited time at pbs.org/austincitylimits immediately following the initial broadcast. Viewers can visit acltv.com for news regarding future tapings, episode schedules and select live stream updates. The show's official hashtag is #acltv. First appearing on ACL in 2009, the groundbreaking Texas native—born Annie Clark—delivers a thrilling, 13-song career-spanning set in a visually and sonically stunning hour. Dressed in a red vinyl bodysuit and matching thigh-high stiletto boots and set amidst the backdrop of a futuristic production, the singer-songwriter-guitarist is backed by a three-piece ensemble including two male musicians rendered as faceless mannequins on electronics and drums. St. Vincent’s mesmerizing set draws heavily from her critically-acclaimed fifth album MASSEDUCTION, with highlights including a segue from the guitar-shredding coda of “Pills,” into the vulnerable musical eulogy of “New York”. The album’s hypnotic title track opens with bassist/keyboardist Toko Yasuda chanting “power corrupts” in Japanese, while Clark unleashes furious guitar licks amidst a flurry of strobes.

Its original icons were overwhelmingly male—a pattern being subverted in both contemporary iterations of glam and the music industry as a whole. Fluid portrayals of gender, performative sexuality, camp, and vibrant, eye-catching visuals are among the most identifiable traits which signify the glam style, though science fiction also serves as a common thread between many glam stars, both past and present. The superficial linkages between artists like David Bowie, Prince, Janelle Monáe, and St. Vincent provide

  • St Vincent Biog
ST. VINCENT ! Official Site | Facebook! | Twitter It starts with the creation myth: St. Vincent, naked and alone in the wilderness, startled as the omi- nous rattle of a snake breaks the silence of her Eden. She realizes she's not alone in the world and breaks into a run, headed towards the uncertainty of the future. It's a lovely and appropriate metaphor to open St. Vincent's self-titled fourth album, except that it literally happened. "It's not a metaphor at all," St. Vincent, aka Annie Clark, says of the album's lead track, "Rattlesnake." While visiting a friend's west Texas ranch, she decided to strip away her clothes and fully enjoy the soli- tude that city life so rarely affords. "I went walking around this great expanse of land. There was no one around so I decided to take my clothes off and immerse myself in nature. I saw holes in the path, but did not put two-and-two together until I heard the rattle and caught a glimpse of the snake." Clark's been moving at a breakneck speed for the past two years, barely stopping to catch her breath amidst a whirlwind of recording and touring. In 2011 she released her third album, 'Strange Mercy,' called "one of the year's best" by the New York Times and "something to behold" by Pitchfork. The record cemented her status as one of her generation's most fearsome and inventive guitarists, earned her the covers of SPIN, Paper, and Under the Radar, performances everywhere from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Fallon to Letterman and Conan, and a year-long sold-out tour of her biggest venues to date around the world.

The Mood Room Big Dance Theater 30th Anniversary Season CONTACT ArKtype/Thomas O. Kriegsmann E [email protected] T 917.386.5468 www.bigdancetheater.org Notes from the Director Sometimes you find an artistic soul mate in the simple act of opening a book. This is what th happened to me when I read the late 20 C “plays” of visual artist Guy de Cointet. But, they are not really plays-- they are visual events with texts that bask in the hot mess of the non-narrative posing as narrative-- a state I would call living! Here is where de Cointet and I intersect: he is devoted to detours, departures, tonal shifts, and the unconfirmed. An atmosphere of codes, exits, and non-results permeate the writing. He quotes without substantiation or reason, he is a-historic, is liberated from achieving even a glimmer of resolution, and his authorial voice is intentionally cracking. His theater is both textual and visually based, without any hierarchy for language, truth, or the answer-- and the physical objects in the texts have no stable meaning throughout the play. No one changes; no one learns anything. The Mood Room will work specifically from the text of de Cointet’s (1982) text The Five Sisters. The Five Sisters very lightly references Chekhov’s Three Sisters with both a hilarious disrespect – and with a recognition of the internal intention of the regret, despair and relational complexity in the Chekhov text. The departure from the original Cointet production will be the staging, choreography and visual design, as The Mood Room will utilize Cointet’s words without any reference to his original staging or visual design.

One of the most prevalent areas of the internet’s cultural dominance is in popular music, and this thesis addresses how the internet is being understood and discussed by popular music artists. I study the works of Grimes and Childish Gambino, two popular music artists who grew up alongside the internet’s rise to cultural dominance and explicitly address this experience as an integral component of their lives and works.
