1. INTRODUCTION This report describes about the results of material sources investigation for the NR 13 North Road Improvement and Maintenance Project . Along the National Road Number 13 North from Sikeuth junction ( capital) to Phonhong district, Vientian Provinces. (See location map of material sources in Figure 1, 1.1 and 1.2). The objective of this investigation is finding sources of feasible material for project of National Road Number 13 North improvement and maintenance Project (Sikeuth Junction to Phonhong District).

The Material Sources Investigation was conducted by geological investigation team of Lao Transport Engineering Consultant (LTEC).

2. WORKS PROCEDURES

1) To find discover of material sources in the project area or nearest location.

2) Collect sample of material to laboratory and do the test analysis of material properties.

3) Collect in formation about material sources.

4) Report preparation about field investigation and test results.

The following location of material sources have been investigated:  Borrow pit (BP01) material sample have been taken from the km 1+500 Left hand side 4,000 meters (Sikeuth village) on Road Number 13 north section from Sikeuth junction to Phonhong district. (See location map of material sources in Figure 1.1).  Borrow pit (BP02) material sample have been taken from the km 10+300 Left hand side 4,000 meters( Nayan village) on Road Number 13 north section from Sikeuth junction to Phonhong District. (See location map of material sources in Figure 1.1).  Borrow pit (BP03) material sample have been taken from the km 10+300 Left hand side 3,280 meters ( Nayan village) on Road Number 13 north section from Sikeuth junction to Phonhong District. (See location map of material sources in Figure 1.1).  Borrow pit (BP04) material sample have been taken from the km 14+050 Left hand side 4,000 meters( Ilai tai village) on Road Number 13 north section from Sikeuth junction to Phonhong District. (See location map of material sources in Figure 1.2).  Quarry (Q01), Q02, Q03 materials samples have been taken in Sakai Quarry from crushing plant (km 41+000 (Q1),km42+500 (Q2), 42+00(Q3) Sakai village on Road Number 11 from Sikait to Sangthong District. (See location map of material sources in Figure 1.1).

3. FIELD EXPLORATION AND CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

3.1 Field Exploration

The field investigation commenced on 1st August 2017 and completed on 08th August 2017. The field exploration performed under the supervision of LTEC’s material engineer.

3.2 Construction materials

After a reconnaissance in the project area the suitability samples of construction material in those areas had collected for testing and analysis. Borrow pits have found 12 locations, river sands have found 9 locations, river gravels have found 8 locations and quarry has found 3 location (See location map of material sources in Figure 1.1 to 1.2). The appropriate sources of construction material had found in the project area and close to the construction site as summarized in the following table:

3.3 Data of material sources. Information about the sources of material are as described in the following (i) Borrow pit No BP 01 Borrow pit No BP 01 is located at km 1+500 Left hand side 4,000 meters from the Road Number 13 north Section from Sikeuth junction to Phohong district at Ban Sikeuth, Vientiane capital. (See Figure A-01). Size of the borrow pit area are approximately 100 m x 100 m x 6.00 m Three pits were dugs in the borrow pit area by average depth of 6.00 m. The sample of materials in the pits were logged in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) see Figure 2 and the pit log is shown on (Figure A-1). One bulk sample with its weight exceeded 40 kg was collected from each pit and placed in to labeled sampling bags. Estimate of quantity is more than 55,000 m3. (ii) Borrow pit No BP 02 Borrow pit No BP 02 is located at km 10+300 left hand side 4,000 meters from the Road Number 13 north Section from Sikeuth junction to Phonhong at Ban Nayang, Naxaithong District ,Vientiane Capital . (See Figure 01). Size of the borrow pit area are approximately 100 m x 50 m x 5.50 m. Three pit was dug in the borrow pit area by depth of 6.00 m. 4. LABORATORY TESTING

Samples collected from the borrow pits, river gravels, river sands and quarry had delivered to laboratory of LTEC in Vientiane Capital and performed testing in order to determine the engineering properties. The laboratory tests had operated at the following items:

4.1 Test method for samples from borrow pits:

(1) Sieve Analysis test is in accordance with AASHTO T-88 to determine the grain size distribution of the soils. (2) Atterberg Limit test is in accordance with AASHTO T-89 and T-90 to determine: Liquid Limit (LL), Plastic Limit (PL) and Plasticity Index (PI) of the soils. (3) Compaction test is in accordance with AASHTO T180 method D, to determine the moisture density relationship (OMC-MDD) of the soils. (4) California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test is in accordance with AASHTO T-193 (4 days soaked) to determine the bearing capacity of the soils. (5) Natural water content is in accordance with AASHTO T-265 (6) Soil classification is in accordance with AASHTO M-145 The test results are summarized in Appendix A Table A-1 to A-3 The sketchy plan of borrow pits can be seen in Figure A1 - A12

4.2 Test method for samples from river gravels, river sands and quarry (1) Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregate is in accordance with AASHTO T-27. 5. RECOMMENDATION: These test results of the material have provided as basic information for the design Engineer and the contractor only. In the construction phase, the contractor is required to take more investigation or seeking more the sources of material and do the analysis of its property. Before opening the sources, the contractor is required to discuss and agreed with the land property owner and get permission from the local government authority. 6.
