THE HISTORY of the COMMUNITY and FAMILES of FREEDOM WYOMING & IDAHO THE HISTORY OF THE COMMUNITY And FAMILES of FREEDOM WYOMING & IDAHO CONTAINING FAMILY HISTORIES STORIES AND OTHER HISTORICAL AND TRIVIAL INFORMATION 1ST EDITION Compiled in 1994-2008 Copyright ©1994-2008 Update date: 5/1/2008 PREFACE This book could not have been published without the perseverance, patience, time, and love provided by Lorna Haderlie. Assistants that contributed time to help type, compile and proof read, were: Judy Clinger, Melvin Clinger, Carole Hokanson, Elaine Jenkins, Annette Luthi, Bonnie Pantuso, Corey Pantuso, Julie Pantuso, Marie Pantuso, Stefanie Pantuso and those that submitted the information contained here within. The Freedom History was assembled from family History's and records submitted by the families, friends, and individuals contained, and not contained in this book. Any misrepresentations by editing were not intentional. The enormous job of compiling this amount of material from so many sources is bound to have created some errors. The many hundreds of donated hours were hard to coordinate. Any omission of material is probably because it was not submitted or missed but not intentional. Any conflicts that may exist between the histories contained in this book may be because they are personal memories and perspectives of each individual submitter. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS History Of Freedom Wyoming 07/21/95 E71 10 Freedom Amusement Hall 09/01/96 E110 21 Freedom Cemetery 10/03/94 E44 22 Freedom Cemetery’s 6/14/00 23 Ruth Haderlie’s Dance 04/25/94 E26 26 Ode To The "Valley" 10/03/94 E46 27 A Story About Polygamists 03/23/94 E05 28 Silver Star Telephone 04/18/94 E25 29 Star Valley Stake of Zion 10/03/94 E41 32 Thrashing In Early Freedom 10/03/94 E43 34 The Vail Coal Mine 06/14/00 35 Song About Freedom (tune): Open Up Your Heart And Let The Sunshine In 37 Food Preserving - By Verba Erickson 06/16/00 E86 38 Freedom’s First Pioneer 40 Twins Born In Freedom 08/13/00 E95 51 Missionary List Compiled By Ina Erickson 08/13/00 E93 52 Allred, Paul & Vera Haderlie 01/16/95 E53 55 Ashment, Floyd 06/14/00 56 Ashment, James George & Catherine Ann Bratton 06/14/00 58 Baker, Wayne & Mariam 03/20/99 CP112 60 Bateman, Charles Thomas 03/19/00 62 Barber, Walter Riches & Lorraine 06/17/00 64 Baugh, John Robert & Tracey Clark 03/14/99 E92 65 Bright, Annie Elisabeth Bright 09/28/93 A1 66 Brog, Ernest & Martha 06/16/00 68 Brog, Fred & Annie 06/15/00 71 Brog, Tyler Fred & Suzanne 06/17/01 72 Brower, Alden, Carl & Audron Miles 07/18/99 JP 73 Brower, Harold & Reberta 04/04/99 MP9 75 Brower, James Mason & Mary Erickson 06/04/00 76 Call, Jessie Newswander 02/11/95 E55 79 Campbell, Norma Jenkins 05/11/94 E29 81 Chadwick, Clarence & Ressa 06/16/00 82 Child, D'orr & Elnora Hanson 03/14/99 E88 84 Child, Ralph & Marie Stoor 10/09/94 E42 87 Clark, Alma Porter & Marie Stoor 8/13/00 E96 89 Clark, Arthur & Loretta McWherter 03/14/99 MP2 91 Clark, Arthur Benjamin & Helen Margaret Ross 03/14/99 MP 4 93 Clark, Daniel John & Mary Amanda Hokanson 03/14/99 MP 3 95 Clark, Ida E. SPEAKERS Randall Luthi, President, National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) Randall Luthi became President of the National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) on March 1, 2010. An attorney and rancher from Freedom, Wyoming and a former Speaker of the Wyoming State House of Representatives, Luthi has an impressive background in government service and the private sector. He most recently served as the Director of the Minerals Management Service (MMS) at the Department of the Interior (DOI) from July 2007 through January 2009. Immediately prior to directing MMS, Luthi served as the Deputy Director of the Department’s Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). In 2000, he started the law firm of Luthi & Voyles, LLC, in Thayne, Wyoming, which helped pay for ranching expenses. Luthi’s ranch operation consists of a cow/calf operation and the growing of hay and barley. It is rumored that he actually has more pictures of cows on his phone than people. Ironically, in 1995 Luthi’s career in the Wyoming House of Representatives began with his name being drawn from a cowboy hat by Governor Mike Sullivan to declare him the victor in a tie vote. He served as speaker in 2005 and 2006. As a state legislator, he served on the Judiciary Committee, Management Audit Committee and Management Council. During his legislative career, he also developed an understanding of the importance of royalties paid to the federal government by companies producing energy on our public lands and waters. As Majority Leader and Speaker of the Wyoming House, Luthi was instrumental in formulation of state budgets which relied heavily upon royalties and severance taxes paid by energy companies developing federal leases.

Between March 18—the rough start date of the pandemic shutdown, when most federal and state economic restrictions were in place—and June 17, the total net worth of the state’s 3 billionaires rose from $13.5 billion to $15.8 billion, based on an analysis of Forbes data. Forbes’ annual billionaires report was published March 18, 2020, and the most recent real-time data was collected June 17 from the Forbes website. This $2.3 billion increase in wealth is 60% of the projected $3.7 billion state revenue shortfall in fiscal years 2020 and 2021 combined due to the pandemic. Two Indiana billionaires—Carl Cook and Herb Simon—saw their wealth grow by 26% and 11%, respectively, during the pandemic while 741,000 of the state’s residents lost their jobs, 41,000 fell ill with the virus and 2,500 died from it.

  • A History of the Rise of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Wyoming
A History of the Rise of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wyoming Sources: “Life of Archibald Gardner”, Delila Gardner Hughes, Alpine Publishing, 2nd Edition, 1970. Anyone with historical information about the rise of the Church is invited to share that information by sending it to this website and it will be added. Thanks. Hal Pierce Star Valley During 1877 Moses Thatcher and Bishop William B. Preston had explored this valley and were impressed by its beauty and potential. There was evidence that Shoshone Indians had previously been there but were not in the area at that time. On 29 August 1878 Elder Brigham Young, Jr. dedicated it as a gathering place for the Saints. In 1880 the city of Afton became the first settling place and the valley was then named Star Valley because it was a star among valleys. The location was then praised in an article in the Logan Utah newspaper during September 1880. Archibald Gardner visited the valley and asked Bishop C. D. Cazier for advice and explained he was looking for land and a good place to set up mill sites. Although he was happily settled in Jordan Utah he needed a place to avoid being arrested as a polygamist. The Church issued a Manifesto against polygamy in 1890 which eliminated the threat of his being arrested. For a time Archibald boarded with Catherine Carpenter in a room that was exposed to the outside elements (garret) and without sufficient bedding. He suffered from exposure to the weather and never fully recovered from it.

To be content with as they are, to be "neutral," is to take sides with the oppressor who also wants to keep the status quo.

  • 2016 Star Valley Economic and Demographic Review
2016 STAR VALLEY ECONOMIC AND DEMOGRAPHIC REVIEW 2016 Authors Summary Star Valley has recovered from the sharp market downturn in 2009 when the hard reality of the Great Recession swept though the local economy like a grim reaper. The local economy realized a very slow and marginal recovery until early 2014 when hints of improved economic growth began to emerge. The Star Valley economic recovery continues through today: area population is growing again, unemployment is reaching historic lows at 4.5%, liquidity appears to be increasing, local inflation is tolerable, jobs are available, and real estate prices are increasing. Overall, these indicate a fairly robust and bright local economy. However, there are significant headwinds developing. The clouds are generally macro issues originating outside the Star Valley economy. The State of Wyoming is now feeling the real impacts of the low energy prices and the “war on coal” causing reduced state income and reduced employment as mining activity and rig counts have fallen. The Wyoming state income from mineral activity is directly correlated to local and county governmental jobs and activity given that the state is a primary funding source. Government, which has been a growing sector, is now realizing a reduction as revenues decline. The Federal Reserve continues to communicate a desire to raise interest rates even though European and Asian central banks are now experimenting with negative interest rates. Today, the U.S. economy is showing very marginal growth, with what the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) recently called the “Weakest Recovery Since ’49.” U.S. gross domestic product grew at a seasonally and inflation-adjusted annual rate of only 1.2% in the second quarter, 2016.
