After breakfast at your hotel, we will proceed for Spectacular Golden Pass Train Experience. The brand-new panoramic train Luzern-Interlaken Express now takes you to discover Lake Brienz and the Giessbach falls. But let’s not take it too fast, as before then it reaches Interlaken which means “between two lakes”, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. You might be lucky enough to get a glimpse of the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau, known as the proud 4000s, which have made this tourist gateway to the Bernese Oberland so famous. The train will then change from one bank to the other which gives you a better view of the snow covered summits. It is said that Lake Brienz has a very distinctive colour. Could this be due to its glacial waters? Take a look for yourself and when in Brienz, look towards the other bank to see the white foam of the Giessbach falls tumbling from the rocks above. You will then climb back up to the high pastures towards the Brünig pass. A medium altitude pass, it is located at an altitude of just over 1,000 m. The countryside rolls past on both sides. On the other hillside, there are three small lakes; Lungern, Sarnen and Alpnach and just after these, Lake Lucerne. You are now in the historical heart of Switzerland. Lucerne which is the goal of your trip, is close by. Facing the station is the lake and the bridge over the Reuss, leading towards the charming old city, the promenade along its quays and its elegant hotels. Lunch at Indian Restaurant. Post lunch, your day is free for leisure. Explore the beauty of Switzerland on your own or just sit back and relax in your hotel in the midst of Swiss Mountains. Dinner at Indian Restaurant. Overnight in Interlaken / Lucerne. Day 8:- Depart Swiss / Arrive Home. (Breakfast) . Today after breakfast, whole group will get single transfer to Airport for our flight back home, collecting all of those wonderful memories and souvenirs gathered from Swiss Holidays. Economic Significance of Cableways Illustrated by the Example of Titlis Rotair in Engelberg, near to Lucerne, Switzerland by Eugenio Rüegger1 Structure of Lecture: 1. Geography / Transportation 2. History 3. Important Background Information on Engelberg 4. Tourism in Switzerland 5. Facts & Figures 6. Business Management 7. Economic Significance for Engelberg Tourist Resort 8. Connection of Tourism with Alpine Agriculture 9. Cableway Companies and Ecology 10. Cableway Companies and their Social Environment 11. Conclusions 1. Geography / Transportation Engelberg is situated in an alpine valley at the base of Mount Titlis at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level (3,280 ft.). In the commuter belt of Northern- and Central Switzerland, Mount Titlis is the nearest beauty spot, which, thanks to the glacier on top, guarantees for ice and snow all year round. Getting to Engelberg is easy. The LSE (train between Lucerne and Engelberg) has been in service for 100 years now, and the road that connects Lucerne with the resort is in perfect condition as well. A car ride from Lucerne to Engelberg takes about half an hour. Therefore Engelberg does not profit from vacation tourism only, but also from day trip business. It is no use to mention that day trip business, of course, involves disadvantages as well. On the other hand, Titlis Rotair is particularly interested in achieving a better base in use of capacity during the week. This again is related with the supply of hotels in the tourist resort. Titlis Rotair operates 20 different transportation facilities, thereby offering ski runs of all levels of difficulty.

  • 'Failed A.C.' 269
'FAILED A.C.' 269 • 'FAILED A.C.' BY T. S. BLAKENEY N the Alpine Journal for November, 196o, an attempt was made to rescue from oblivion an early mountaineer (in the 186o's), John Thorn of Liverpool, and it was then seen that this more than usually enterprising climber had failed on three occasions to be elected to the Alpine Club. It has seemed worth while to try and compile a list of other candidates who, for one reason or another, did not obtain membership of the Club. The list is printed below, based on entries in the old Candidates' Books, supplemented by the register of appli cations kept by Sir Edward Davidson in two massive volumes, and with the aid of the Minute Books of the Committee and General Meetings of the Alpine Club. The great scrap-books, containing the Club's printed notices, etc. since the beginning, have also been of use, and in some cases the original application forms still exist, but this is not invariable. For obvious reasons, the list is not brought down to recent times, but ends with the close of the First World War. The list is cert~inly not complete; an application might come before the Committee, and yet no papers now exist, and only an entry in the Minute Book records the matter (two examples are given under 1898)~ Again, a candidate's application might be held up by his proposer, and never reach the Committee if it was decided that the case should not be pursued; others papers might find a home in the personal files of the President or Honorary Secretary of the Club for the time being.
