Yet the man is capable of some extraordinary work — brilliant, funny with plenty of love and respect for the history of comics. With New X-Men, one of a handful of Marvel titles he wrote, Morrison, in his manifesto included in this book, wanted the X-books to return to the halcyon days of Byrne and Claremont, exciting times before the New X-Men: Ultimate Collection Book 3 became inert and mind-numbing. For the most part he succeeded. Back in the day, New X-Men: Ultimate Collection Book 3 remember looking forward to picking up this title in single issues. This is the culmination of the run that Morrison had planned out from the beginning with the only head scratcher being the final story line from the future. Wolverine recruits a drunken Cyclops at the Hellfire Club. Along with Fantomax Vive le Fanotmax! Logan learns Weapon X history stuff. After hiding behind his Xorn disguise, Magneto, hopped on Kick the song lyrics at the beginning of the review finally make sensea humdinger mutant-power enhancing crack, does the full reveal and finally punks the X-Men. But Magneto goes balls to the wall to create a new mutant paradise in Manhattan. Future times are a mixed bag. Frank Quietly helped set the tone with Morrison in the beginning of the run. In this volume, a different artist takes a turn for each story arc. Thanks, Grant!! No worries for Wolverine, being pee-shy is not a secondary mutant ability. Jul 12, Dan Schwent rated it really liked it Shelves: comics. Assault on Weapon Plus was an action-fest. The who shot Emma Frost subplot didn't really move forward at all, though. I liked that Marvel finally had the guts to reveal something about Wolverine's past after more than 30 years. Planet X: Xorn leads a revolt inside Xavier's school and his true identity is revealed. Meanwhile, Wolverine and Jean Grey are on an asteroid that's headed into the sun, Beast and Emma Frost go down in a plane crash, and Cyclops and Fantomex New X-Men: Ultimate Collection Book 3 crashed a space shuttle into the ocean. All the seeds Morrison planted earlier in his run have bore fruit. The Phoenix is unleashed, Cyclops steps up, and lots of mutants die. That's about all I can say without spoiling too much. Instead of a glimpse of Damian as Batman, we get a dark future where The Beast is a maniacal super villain. It was okay but ultimately pointless. It was no Days of the Future Past. Thus concludes Grant Morrison's run on the X-Men. It wasn't perfect but it was damn good. Too bad a pretty big plot twist was revealed on the cover. View all 9 comments. Finished New X-Men: Ultimate Collection Book 3 run that is considered one of the best of all time for X-men and I'm inclined to agree now that it is finished. The story starts with Summers not having a good day. So Logan goes to check up on him at a bar and ask him for a favor. This leads to going after X Wolverine, Weapon 13, and Cyclops go together to track him down. On top of that Xorn makes his move, and we finally see his true intentions. Last but not least is a story of the possible future and what could be. I loved th Finished the run that is considered one of the best of all time for X-men and I'm inclined to agree now that it is finished. I loved the hell out of the Xorn storyline. It has everything you hope. Political message, great fights, epic scale, and wonderful character moments. I also enjoyed the heck out of weapon 15, he was scary, but also kind of sad. The last storyline was the weakest by far in the whole run and could have been better. Overall though Grant's run ends strong and I have to agree, as a X-Men fan, it's one of the best. As for those who purchased this volume will be very aware of the front cover as it gives away a major spoiler: Xorn — the Chinese mutant with a "star for a brain" — is the Master of Magnetism himself. No doubt the grim nature will be unpleasant for some readers, but certainly the most touching moment is a quiet scene between Jean Grey and Wolverine who are left stranded in space. As much as a romance was never blossomed between the two as Wolverine previously stated that it could never work, they have always respected each other and how they share feelings telepathically in front on certain death, is truly heart-breaking and special praise to artist Phil Jimenez and inker Andy Lanning who nailed this emotional scene. No doubt the ideas here are so out-there that how it all adds up is ultimately nonsensical, especially how it alters a broken timeline. This final arc was in the hands of artist Marc Silvestri who has previously drawn X-Men as his Jim Lee-ish illustrations are a nice fit to the bleak future. View all 3 comments. I didn't find this as interesting as the previous 2 books. A solid read though. Definitely would recommend this New X-Men: Ultimate Collection Book 3 run though. Then of course Magneto tries to destroy humanity and make mutants the superior race on New X-Men: Ultimate Collection Book 3 yet again but this time when the X-Men are scattered and vulnerable he just sits around brooding, biding his time for no real reason to set his plan in motion. Things get very topsy-turvy as all of the X-Men characters get flipped around and re-configured: Beast turns out to be this evil overlord-geneticist who harnesses the power of the Phoenix. It is probably not much of a stretch that when looking at the history of Marvel Comics, Spider-Man and the X-Men are likely the two most popular properties that Marvel has at their disposal or at least were before the advent of the MCU and the Avengers based films. Spider-Man was a success from day one because Lee and Ditko presented readers with a hero who was so human, unlike the likes of Superman or Batman in my estimation, the closest DC ever got to what was so charming about the early Sp It is probably not much of a stretch that when looking at the history of Marvel Comics, Spider-Man and the X-Men are likely the two most popular properties that Marvel has at their disposal or at least were before the advent of the MCU and the Avengers based films. Spider-Man was a success from day one because Lee and Ditko presented readers with a hero who was so human, unlike the likes of Superman or Batman in my estimation, the closest DC ever got to what was so charming about the early Spider-Man was the Flash. When Marvel decided to create a new comics universe based on their properties the "Ultimate" universe it makes sense that they would start with Spider-Man and the X- Men when kickstarting this universe. Unfortunately, in true Millar style, his attempts at cleaning up the mess end up much like a Roomba attempting to clean a pile of dog shit on a hard wood floor--the shit ends up everywhere and things are worse off than when the robot vacuum showed up. My primary issue here and to be honest, from the beginning of Millar's run on the book is his treatment of Wolverine. I think there is an incorrect notion that even though Wolverine is quick to resort to violence when he finds himself in confrontations, that somehow this means he lacks a moral compass by which he operates. The Marvel Wolverine to this point didn't have a problem maiming people, but at the same time, he operated with a kind of honor and righteousness that made him a "hero. Millar, throughout this run, wants us to find Wolverine morally ambiguous, but in attempting to do that, Wolverine comes off as inconsistent, which is odd since I have commented in past reviews that he seems to be relying on readers being familiar with the earlier take on the X-Men. In the first volume, he insinuates that the real reason Wolverine decides not to betray the X-Men as part of Magneto's plan is because he wants to bed Jean Grey which he does. There is an event at the end of the previous collection concerning Wolverine that is a driving force in the end of Millar's last arc. But if Wolverine is capable of the thing that drives this subplot, I don't understand why Wolverine just didn't go through with Magneto's plan and take what he wanted. Millar wants us to see Wolverine as having complicated motives for what he does, but all it does is confuse things and leaves quite the mess for Brian Michael Bendis to clean up as he took over the book after the completion of the issues in this collection. To be honest, I don't have high hopes for Bendis' Ultimate X-Men as he only stewarded the book for a year before handing it over to someone else. Of course, Ultimate Spider-Man contemporaneously published at this time is some of Bendis' best work as a writer. I hope that taking the reins on the other flagship "Ultimate" title didn't lead to a reduction of quality on Ultimate Spider-Man as well. I guess I will soon find out. Stop doing it! Marvel struck gold when they launched the Ultimate X-Men series. By unshackling the popular characters from four decades of convoluted continuity and starting fresh, they were able to let new fans and old in on the X-Men from ground zero. I've been following this series through these deluxe hardcover collections, which contain roughly a year's worth of individual issues and at least two full story arcs. The third Ultimate X-Men hardcover collection includes the following issues: Ultimate War issues and Ultimate War - Magneto is alive, contrary to what everyone thought thanks to Professor X. The clash between the New X-Men: Ultimate Collection Book 3 and the Ultimates is epic, and reminds us why we love comics in the first place. Mark Millar's writing is sharp as always, and Chris Bachalo's artwork is incredibly dynamic and stylized. Return of the King issues - Magneto is back, doing what he does best - killing civilians on a biblical New X-Men: Ultimate Collection Book 3. He's got a willing army and nearly unstoppable powers, and the only thing standing in his way are some very battered X-Men Millar has really set the standard for all future Magneto stories, and has personified evil in a way that is truly frightening. Artwork on this run is by David Finch who keeps getting better and Adam Kubert not his best work, unfortunately. I highly recommend Ultimate X-Men, not only to new X-fans who might be bewildered by the continuity of the older series, but to old school X-Men fans like me. A pretty solid volume. Nothing bad, although nothing that blew me out of the water. I really enjoyed the seamless inclusion of the Ultimates in here, really made the X-men feel like they were part of the Ultimate world, as well as tying the wasp's mutant status all in. Not sure how I feel about the phoenix force being dragged along. I was really disappointed in how quick and shitty that story arc went in Ultimate X-men so I'm hoping it's New X-Men: Ultimate Collection Book 3 kept alive to do it proper credit.
