It was a fun night for everyone. The Chapter made campaign contributions, along with matching contributions from PIPAC, to the following candidates: Rep. Larry Ahern, Mr. Chris Latvala, Rep. Kathleen Peters, Mr. Chris Sprowls, and Mr. Bill Young. Four of these five candidates attended our tabletop event, addressed the crowd and received their contribution checks. Congratulations to those who were elected on November 4. The Chapter Board met Tuesday, November 11 at Belleair Pool Service and Supply in Largo. Thank you to David Oxley, Belleair Pool Service and Supply, for hosting this month’s meeting and to Jim Guszkiewicz, SCP Distributors, for sponsoring this month’s lunch. The Board will not be meeting in December. The next Board of Directors meeting will be held at noon on Tuesday, January 6 at AquaCal, 2629 24th Street North, St. Petersburg. Our Board of Directors meetings are usually scheduled for the first Tuesday of the month. We are always interested in hearing your ideas for Chapter meetings and programs. VERIZON POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS JANUARY – DECEMBER 2012 1 Verizon Political Contributions January – December 2012 A Message from Craig Silliman Verizon is affected by a wide variety of government policies ‐‐ from telecommunications regulation to taxation to health care and more ‐‐ that have an enormous impact on the business climate in which we operate. We owe it to our shareowners, employees and customers to advocate public policies that will enable us to compete fairly and freely in the marketplace. Political contributions are one way we support the democratic electoral process and participate in the policy dialogue. Our employees have established political action committees at the federal level and in 20 states. These political action committees (PACs) allow employees to pool their resources to support candidates for office who generally support the public policies our employees advocate. This report lists all PAC contributions, corporate political contributions, support for ballot initiatives and independent expenditures made by Verizon in 2012. The contribution process is overseen by the Corporate Governance and Policy Committee of our Board of Directors, which receives a comprehensive report and briefing on these activities at least annually. We intend to update this voluntary disclosure twice a year and publish it on our corporate website. We believe this transparency with respect to our political spending is in keeping with our commitment to good corporate governance and a further sign of our responsiveness to the interests of our shareowners. April 14, 2017 Short-Term Vacation Rentals – Oppose CS/SB 188 and HB 425 CS/SB 188 (Steube) will be considered by the Senate Community Affairs Committee on Monday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m. Please contact Senators on this committee and urge them to OPPOSE CS/SB 188. HB 425 (La Rosa) is expected to be considered by the House Commerce Committee on Wednesday, April 19 at 8:00 a.m. Please contact Representatives on this committee and urge them to OPPOSE HB 425. CS/SB 188 and HB 425 would preempt cities from adopting ordinances specific to vacation rentals. The Florida League of Cities opposes CS/SB 188 and HB 425 because it would take away local government authority to regulate short term rental properties to protect the health and welfare of residents, visitors and businesses. If your city has adopted a vacation rental ordinance since the law changed in 2014, that ordinance will be nullified. Cities were preempted from regulating vacation rentals in 2011. Due to an increasing number of problems with vacation rentals post-2011 (and after considerable complaints from city officials), the legislature passed a bill that gave cities back some regulatory authority over vacation rentals. As long as the ordinance does not affect the duration or frequency of the rental, or outright prohibit rentals in an area (zoning), cities can adopt regulations that only apply to these properties. One example is requiring all vacation rentals to register with the city, provide proof of licensure from the state, and be inspected to ensure that the properties are compliant with building, fire, and life safety codes.
