NB: Bear in mind that competitors often play well within time limits. Withdrawals also affect class commencement times.

6. Time Limits a. Performers and teachers should ensure that works selected fit comfortably within the time limit, to allow for flexibility within the performance. Accompaniment may be abridged. Performances which exceed the time limit may be deemed ineligible for an award. b. Performances will be timed from the first to the last note of the contestant or accompanist, excluding tuning. NELLE ASHDOWN (1924-2002) Nelle lived in Hobart most of her life except for six years which were spent in Thailand. Her primary and secondary schooling was at Clemes College, where she excelled at music, drama and sport. She trained as an infant school teacher and had various teaching appointments in Hobart before marrying in 1946. Her love of music was evident very early and was encouraged at school. She was fortunate to have Madam Lucy Purchas (singing) and Miss Ann McGarry (piano) as her teachers, and under their guidance she reached Licentiate level in both disciplines. Nelle was a member of the original 7HT Children’s Show, compered by the late John Loughlin. She was engaged to perform on ABC radio and sang in several Music Room recitals in which Jessie Wakefield was often a soloist. She was one of the earliest performers on Tasmanian ABC TV. Her singing ability brought Nelle considerable success in competitions during the 1940s, winning the Mercury Aria and Aria Competitions in Hobart and Launceston. She was a finalist in the 1946 ABC Vocal and Concerto Competition. Nelle will be best remembered for her perfomances in many supporting operatic roles presented by the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust and the National Theatre and Fine Arts Society: Pitti Sing in Mikado (1956), Mercedes in Carmen (1957), Marcellina in Barber of Seville (1958), Suzuki in Madame Butterfly (1958 and 1965), Marcellina in Marriage of Figaro (1959), Maddalena in Rigoletto (1959), Flora Bervoix in La Traviata (1961) and Nesta in La Belle Helene (1964). She was guest soloist at many concerts for charity and at special anniversary performances such as the 70th anniversary of the Orpheus Club. Nelle shared her musical and organising abilities with the community and will be remembered for using her talents to assist many organisations.

Graeme Buchanan Graeme Buchanan came to Tasmania as the official accompanist for the Cecil Trowbridge Launceston Singing Studio. He moved to Hobart to the Tasmanian Conservatorium where he was a fine piano teacher, superb accompanist, often performing for ABC radio broadcasts, and eventually Dean of Music. He was a State President of the Tasmanian Music Teachers’ Association and, as an innovative President of the City of Hobart Eisteddfod Society, he was responsible for introducing the recital sections and removing the system of allocating marks, among other things. His sudden death at a relatively early age was widely mourned.

Helen Cole Helen Cole was born in Kempton and taught at the Kempton State School. In addition to her classroom teaching she trained choirs and choral groups at Princes Street and then Ogilvie High School, where she was head of the music department. Her choirs and choral groups won many awards in the City of Hobart Eisteddfod and she inspired many students with a love of music.

Joshua Cooper Joshua Cooper possessed a baritone voice of considerable beauty and one very mature in sound. He attended St Virgil’s College for some years, but after winning a music scholarship he transferred to Hutchins School and as a part of his scholarship sang in St David’s Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Canon Revd David O’Neill. He was in his early teens when he began serious music studies with Jody Heald, piano, and singing with Lyall Beven. He was a keen competitor at Eisteddfods and a successful candidate in his AMEB singing examinations. Despite his extreme youth he influenced so many people with his talent and personality.

Lady Cross Lady Cross was the wife of Sir Ronald Cross, who served as Governor of Tasmania from 1951 to 1958. Their talented daughters Susanna and Karina gained many awards in the City of Hobart Eisteddfod. The Lady Cross trophies were donated in memory of their happy association with the Society.

Gwyneth Dixon OAM Gwyneth (Gwen) Dixon was a Tasmanian soprano, much loved as a performer and teacher. Originally from Devonport, she was later based in Hobart. A protégée of Marianne Mathy, Gwen was awarded a 2- year scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London, which she decided to forego because she had a young family. During her 35-year singing career, Gwen was much in demand as a soloist with the Sydney Symphony and other orchestras, performed various opera and operetta roles at the Theatre Royal, and was a regular recitalist for the ABC in Tasmania and the Eastern states during the 1940s and 1950s. Her deep passion for choral music led her to establish the Devonport Choral Society in 1938. She conducted it for 20 years. In 1954 she conducted a 2000-voice children’s choir for the visit of Queen Elizabeth to Australia. Gwen was a prolific creative writer and regular contributor to the Devonport Times Magazine. A marvellous raconteur, she was an exceedingly generous hostess whose company was a delight.

After moving to Hobart in 1963, Gwen was Musical Director for the Theatre Royal Opera Chorus, then founded the Theatre Royal Light Opera Company (TRLOC) whose productions she conducted for over 15 years. In 1977 she was persuaded to return to the stage, as Mother Superior in The Sound of Music. Gwen was Public Relations Officer for the Tasmanian Theatre Trust in the 1970s and later set up the Tasmanian Casting Service, She continued teaching singing and conducted the U3A Choir until she was well into her 80s.

A dynamic leader, Gwen engaged in a wide range of community activities: founding president of the Devonport Soroptimist Club, Board member of the Theatre Royal and the Tasmanian Arts Advisory Board and an active member off the Australian-American Association. For over 20 years she recorded for the Tasmanian Hear-a- Book service. In 1996, she was awarded an OAM for services to the musical and cultural life of Tasmania and was named Hobart’s Senior Citizen of the Year in 2000.

The Gwyneth Dixon Memorial Award was initiated, and funds raised by her many colleagues, students and friends who, along with her family, wish to perpetuate her lifelong contribution to Tasmania’s cultural life by establishing in her memory a prestigious perpetual prize to assist singers.

58 Jennifer Filby Jennifer Filby was born in Devonport and from an early age was encouraged to sing and play the piano. Moving to Hobart at 17, she studied piano with Ann McGarry, achieving success in Eisteddfods throughout the state and gaining her L Mus A. She studied voice production with Lucy Purchas, was a finalist in the ABC’s Concerto and Vocal Competition and played regularly in ABC broadcasts. Her teacher training at the University of Tasmania and later her years as a demonstration teacher for the Education Department combined to be a solid foundation for the vocation ahead of her. Although she formed and directed the Australian Rosny Children’s Choir for many years, initially Jennifer had no aspirations to be a music teacher. The Choir travelled the world as a wonderfully successful concert group. As a committee member and as a teacher of innumerable entrants, Jennifer was a memorable contributor to the Eisteddfod Society.

Madam Helen George Madam Helen George was born and educated in England. She studied piano with Miss Kathleen Arnold, who had been a student of Clara Schumann. She had success as a soloist in England and won several prizes. After a visit with her family to Tasmania in 1925, she decided to stay and set up a teaching practice. She had a close association with Madam Lucy Purchas, the well known singing teacher, there being frequent evening performances with contributions from students of both teachers. In 1952 she formed the Georgian Women’s Choir and she had extensive experience as a choral conductor with church choirs. After a busy teaching career when she often gave 17 piano lessons a day, she retired at the age of 87, limiting her students to two. Many of her students went on to become fine musicians, teachers, performers and examiners.

Dulcie and Chester Gifford Chester and Dulcie arrived in Hobart with their family shortly after the completion of the then new Commonwealth Bank, where Chester was manager for many years. Chester’s interests were wide and varied and embraced many aspects of community life. He was Chairman and later President of the Eisteddfod Society and was noted for his generosity in supporting sponsorships. He was made a Knight of St John and later, in 1976, awarded an AM for services to the community.

Dulcie Gifford was a noted contralto and performed regularly for the ABC in recital and in oratorio performances. Like her husband she was active in many charitable organisations and was a great supporter of this Society through sponsorships and participation in Committee activities. She was awarded an OAM in 1980 for her services to the community.

The memorial in their honour reflects their generosity towards the development of the emerging talent of our community.

Jean Green Jean Margaret Green was one of the official accompanists for the first City of Hobart Eisteddfod and continued in this capacity for more than 30 years. She was also involved with the New Norfolk Competitions and the City of Clarence Eisteddfod. She taught many students in piano and/or singing, beginning at the age of 14 and continuing for 64 years. She also taught music at Bellerive, Sorell, Warrane and Risdon Vale Primary Schools. She was much in demand by singers, instrumentalists and choirs to accompany them at concerts and was appreciated by performers of all levels, particularly those who were nervous or hesitant. Jean was accompanist for the Geilston Bay Glee Club and the Georgian Singers, founded by one of her teachers, Madam Helen George. She also conducted choirs and choral groups for CWA clubs at Lindisfarne and Taroona. Learning the pipe organ meant that she often played for church services, particularly at the Hobart Baptist Church. While a resident at the Queen Victoria Home she would play in the lounge and also at church services.

John Harris John Harris was a fine pianist, having been a student of Madam Helen George and later Miss Ann McGarry. He was instrumental in founding the City of Hobart Eisteddfod, while his father Richard Harris was an alderman before serving as Lord Mayor. John was President of the Society for some time and served for many years on the committee. He was a faithful and generous sponsor, maintaining an active interest in the Eisteddfod until his death in 2009.

Karla Heritage (née Major) Music was a part of the family tradition of the Majors, and Karla in turn passed this on to her daughter Julie, a fine pianist who trained in Tasmania before moving to England. Karla was an active supporter of music in Hobart and particularly of the Eisteddfod Society.

Eileen Johnson Eileen Johnson was an outstanding teacher of music. She was an energetic and devoted teacher of countless music students in her area of specialisation, piano, during a career that spanned 70 years until her death in 2009. Throughout her impressive teaching years, her students excelled and were consistently winners at Eisteddfods. In her music practice in Hobart, Eileen trained innumerable students.

A Life Member of the Tasmanian Music Teachers Association, the City of Hobart Eisteddfod Society and the City of Clarence Eisteddfod, Eileen was also an AMEB examiner. She was greatly admired by her fellow musicians as a generous and inspirational friend, teacher and work colleague. She was a committee member on each of these organisations that promote musical excellence, giving countless hours of voluntary service.

Eileen Johnson left a significant legacy. It was a legacy for each of her students - her knowledge of music, her dedication to her art form, her passion, her determination and her uncompromising acceptance and love for those she cared for. She was an inspirational teacher and role model. She made an enormous contribution to the musical life of Tasmania, and to thousands of students.

Joan Johnston (nee Clewer) (1918-2012) Along with her sister, Brenda, Joan was a member of the inaugural committee formed in 1949 to establish the Hobart Eisteddfod. She was the treasurer for many years and remained an active member until she moved to Adelaide in the early 80s. By 1990 Joan was a Life Member. In the early years she spent many hours at the Eisteddfod helping behind the scenes. Joan was not musical herself, but she had a great appreciation of music and the importance of encouraging young musicians to reach their potential by giving them the opportunity to perform on a public stage and receive comment and encouragement on their performance. Joan was a very keen sports lover who played tennis, croquet, golf and lawn bowls and was still playing tennis in her 70s. During the war, Joan saw service as a driver, and was just as happy whether chauffeuring officers or driving large army trucks. She spent her later years living in Adelaide with her husband, Doug, and is sadly missed by her family and friends. The Eisteddfod Society pays tribute to her decades of generous involvement for the benefit of its young performers.

Corrie Jones Corrie Jones was actively involved in the City of Hobart Eisteddfod Society for over 30 years. She was a long serving committee member and Treasurer, and a committed and popular stalwart of the Society. She was always hugely generous with her time and many talents up until her death in 2009.

Diana Large Arriving from England with her family in the early sixties, Diana Large first held drama classes in the upstairs foyer of the Theatre Royal. From this grew Apprentice Theatre, which trained and inspired young people until her death. Her school holiday “Intensive Theatre Weeks” annually drew more than 100 children from Australia – and latterly New Zealand – for tuition by professionals. Former students as diverse as professional actors in England and Australia, a former Artistic Director of the Melbourne Theatre Company, a leading theatre designer in Victoria and a television presenter in London are among those who acknowledge the contribution of this remarkable woman towards the childhood foundations of their careers. The award in her memory is sponsored by her daughter, Fiona Cotton.

Ann McGarry Up until the last week of her life Ann McGarry continued to give piano lessons. Ann McGarry died when she was 85, her life as a piano teacher and music educator having spanned over six decades. She was well known and respected as a practical and pragmatic teacher who successfully ran a large music practice which continued to produce successful and accomplished students of piano. Ann was born in the Huon Valley in Tasmania and received her formal education and piano tuition from the nuns in the convent school at Franklin. She combined a busy teaching schedule with continued music studies, through correspondence work with the Melbourne Conservatorium. Miss McGarry had a studio in the central business district of Hobart and here she ran three studio rooms working with the assistance of her senior students, who acted as tutors to the younger pupils, thereby honing their own teaching skills. Miss Ann McGarry was a great believer in developing young artists by encouraging their participation in the Hobart Eisteddfod. She is remembered first and foremost as a fine teacher and nurturer of the young.

60 Lawrie McKenzie Lawrie McKenzie was a highly esteemed teacher whose total commitment to the education of children included encouragement of their knowledge and enjoyment of music and singing. In 1984 he founded Melody Lane Singers, a group of retired people who maintain his vision of providing enjoyment to people confined to nursing homes by encouraging their participation in community singing.

Sir Basil Osborne Sir Basil worked most of his life in the hardware retail trade. He served on the Hobart City Council from 1952 until 1976, serving ten and a half years as Lord Mayor from late 1959. He was on the Board of the Royal Hobart Hospital from 1944 until 1981, serving as Chairman from 1968 as well as holding significant positions for the Royal Life Saving Society. On the music scene, he was a guest artist at Community Singing, Town Hall for the ABC in 1930 and 1931, winner of the Gentlemen’s Vocal Solo Scholarship at the Hobart Conservatorium of Music in 1923. When he was killed in a car accident in 1968, the Eisteddfod Society created the Arnold Robinson Award in recognition of his extensive work, support and enthusiasm, and in particular in his role of encouraging the talents of young people. The unique award seeks to acknowledge young people’s achievements, and in particular to recognise both performer and accompanist.

Jan Sedivka Jan Sedivka, violinist and pedagogue was a towering figure in string playing in Australia for over 45 years. Born in Czechoslovakia in 1917, Sedivka’s gift for the violin led him to study with renowned Czechoslovak masters. Aged 21, he accepted a scholarship to study in Paris, but his studies were truncated by the outbreak of World War II. As a result of the invasion, he spent six months in a Paris prison in appalling conditions before escaping to England to become a leading performer and highly sought-after teacher. In 1961 Sedivka accepted a position at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and migrated to Australia with his wife Beryl, violoncellist Sela Trau and Libuse Kofrankova, the Czech woman who had nursed him back to health in London. Sedivka left Brisbane in 1966 and made his home in Tasmania where he established the finest string school Australia has ever known. Loyal, contrary, enigmatic, philosophical and verbose, Sedivka was also a consummate artist whose life was devoted to music, his wife and his students. For further details of his fascinating life consult the fine biography “Up is Down” by Dr Elinor Morrisby published by Lyrebird Press. The award in his memory is sponsored by Beryl Sedivka.
