  • Zechstein Slivers Along the Inverted Sontra Graben
https://doi.org/10.5194/se-2020-133 Preprint. Discussion started: 17 August 2020 c Author(s) 2020. CC BY 4.0 License. Emplacement of ”exotic“ Zechstein slivers along the inverted Sontra Graben (northern Hessen, Germany): clues from balanced cross- sections and geometrical forward modelling Jakob Bolz1, Jonas Kley1 5 1Department for Structural Geology & Geodynamics, Geoscience Centre, Georg-August-University, Göttingen, 37077, Germany Correspondence to: Jonas Kley ([email protected]) Abstract. Lens-shaped slivers of Permian (Zechstein) amid Triassic units, appearing along the main boundary fault of the Sontra Graben in central Germany on the southern edge of the Central European Basin System (CEBS) were studied by means 10 of detailed map analysis, a semi-quantitative forward model and two balanced cross-sections. We show how partial reactivation of the graben’s main normal fault and shortcut thrusting in the footwall during inversion, combined with a specific fault geometry involving flats in low shear-strength horizons, produce the observed slivers of ”exotic” Zechstein. Based on regional correlation, extension most likely occurred in Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous time while the contraction is of Late Cretaceous age. The kinematic history of the graben, reconstructed through field observations, structural and cross-section analysis is 15 employed to discuss the dynamic evolution of the graben system in the immediate vicinity and to consider implications for the entire CEBS. 1 Introduction The Mesozoic tectonic evolution of Central Europe involved long-lasting, Triassic to Early Cretaceous extension followed by a short-lived pulse of mostly Late Cretaceous contractional deformation. This history is best documented by subsidence and 20 inversion in the main sub-basins of the Central European Basin System (CEBS) such as the Broad Fourteens and Lower Saxony basins and the Mid-Polish trough (Brochwicz-Lewinski & Pozarvski, 1987; Hooper et al., 1995; Mazur et al., 2005; Maystrenko & Scheck-Wenderoth, 2013).

Therefore prevention is very important in the community of Delmenhorst. The city of Delmenhorst has undertaken the task of avoiding injuries caused by accidents and violence by means of systematic precaution as far as possible. A successful prevention is the precondition for a cross-departmental and systematical approach. The prevention must not only include the reaction to the current occurrences, but must also include a comprehensive and systematic long-term, active strategy. With the report on hand “accreditation of the city of Delmenhorst as safe community” the community of Delmenhorst applies for the acceptance to the international network of the “Safe Communities”. The stakeholders in Delmenhorst would like to learn from the experiences of other countries and they want to provide the international community with their knowledge regarding prevention. • 'Deprived of Their Liberty'
'DEPRIVED OF THEIR LIBERTY': ENEMY PRISONERS AND THE CULTURE OF WAR IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA, 1775-1783 by Trenton Cole Jones A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June, 2014 © 2014 Trenton Cole Jones All Rights Reserved Abstract Deprived of Their Liberty explores Americans' changing conceptions of legitimate wartime violence by analyzing how the revolutionaries treated their captured enemies, and by asking what their treatment can tell us about the American Revolution more broadly. I suggest that at the commencement of conflict, the revolutionary leadership sought to contain the violence of war according to the prevailing customs of warfare in Europe. These rules of war—or to phrase it differently, the cultural norms of war— emphasized restricting the violence of war to the battlefield and treating enemy prisoners humanely. Only six years later, however, captured British soldiers and seamen, as well as civilian loyalists, languished on board noisome prison ships in Massachusetts and New York, in the lead mines of Connecticut, the jails of Pennsylvania, and the camps of Virginia and Maryland, where they were deprived of their liberty and often their lives by the very government purporting to defend those inalienable rights. My dissertation explores this curious, and heretofore largely unrecognized, transformation in the revolutionaries' conduct of war by looking at the experience of captivity in American hands. Throughout the dissertation, I suggest three principal factors to account for the escalation of violence during the war. From the onset of hostilities, the revolutionaries encountered an obstinate enemy that denied them the status of legitimate combatants, labeling them as rebels and traitors.

  • A Genealogical Handbook of German Research
Family History Library • 35 North West Temple Street • Salt Lake City, UT 84150-3400 USA A GENEALOGICAL HANDBOOK OF GERMAN RESEARCH REVISED EDITION 1980 By Larry O. Jensen P.O. Box 441 PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH 84062 Copyright © 1996, by Larry O. Jensen All rights reserved. No part of this work may be translated or reproduced in any form or by any means, electronic, mechanical, including photocopying, without permission in writing from the author. Printed in the U.S.A. INTRODUCTION There are many different aspects of German research that could and maybe should be covered; but it is not the intention of this book even to try to cover the majority of these. Too often when genealogical texts are written on German research, the tendency has been to generalize. Because of the historical, political, and environmental background of this country, that is one thing that should not be done. In Germany the records vary as far as types, time period, contents, and use from one kingdom to the next and even between areas within the same kingdom. In addition to the variation in record types there are also research problems concerning the use of different calendars and naming practices that also vary from area to area. Before one can successfully begin doing research in Germany there are certain things that he must know. There are certain references, problems and procedures that will affect how one does research regardless of the area in Germany where he intends to do research. The purpose of this book is to set forth those things that a person must know and do to succeed in his Germanic research, whether he is just beginning or whether he is advanced.

Karl Drais born 29.4.1785 in Karlsruhe, died 10.12.1851 in Karlsruhe. Short Biography Karl Drais, baptised as Karl Friedrich Christian Ludwig, Freiherr (= baron) Drais von Sauerbronn first was a forest officer employed by the grand duchy of Baden. Later he became off duty whilst retaining his salary and did start a carer as an inventor. Next to others, he did invent a device to record piano music on paper, then a stenograph using 16 characters, two four-wheeled human powered vehicles and on top of all, the two-wheeled velocipede, also called Draisine or hobby- horse, which he presented first time on June 12th 1817 in Mannheim. This was the first vehicle requiring to keep balance whilst using it as a key principle. It was equipped decades later by Pierre Michaux with pedals to become the modern bicycle and further down the road, the automobile invented by Carl Benz. For his inventions, Grand Duke Carl awarded Drais a pension and appointed him as a professor for mechanic science. His experiments with small rail-road bound vehicles did contribute to the railroad handcar, having even today the German name Draisine. Drais was a fervent democrat, supported the wave of revolutions that swept Europe in 1848, dropping his title and the aristocratic "von" from his name in 1849. After the revolution in Baden had collapsed, Drais became mobbed and ruined by royalists. After his death, Drais's enemies systematically repudiate his invention of horseless moving on two wheels. Journal of Business and Economics, ISSN 2155-7950, USA December 2013, Volume 4, No. 12, pp. 1187-1200 Academic Star Publishing Company, 2013 http://www.academicstar.us Distribution of Economic Power and Income between Major Cities and Their Regions in Germany Werner Münzenmaier (Ministry of Finance and Economics Baden-Wuerttemberg, Neues Schloss, D70173 Stuttgart, Germany) Abstract: Based on National Accounts Data for production and income, this article deals with the question how intensive the five economically strongest German cities radiate into their neighboring regions. In this respect, the situation is very different for the five cities and their regions: (1) Two cities (Hamburg, Dusseldorf) are very dominant and exceed the districts of their respective region in all four per-capita indicators; (2) although Munich is an economically very strong city it is surpassed by some rural districts of its region with respect to productivity and income; (3) Frankfurt as an international banking center has a very productive economy and offers the highest earnings of all major cities but it looses a lot of purchasing power due to the commuting of well earning employees residing in more attractive neighboring communities; (4) the indicators show very small disparities within the Region of Stuttgart which is characterized by the production of cars and other investment goods and insofar differs from the other regions with core cities dominating in business services. Key words: regional accounts; labor productivity; compensation of employees; income; cities JEL codes: E01, J30, O18, R12 1. Introduction Major cities radiate in many ways into their neighboring regions. Typically, these cities are economically closely intertwined with the surrounding cities and municipalities and can therefore be considered as the core cities of an area.
