Não posso deixar de expressar meu agradecimento a Deus que, em Jesus Cristo, dá sentido a tudo que faço em minha vida. v II) Resumo A presente tese analisa as representações discursivas sobre o cavaleiro Bertrand Du Guesclin na escrita da história na França da Baixa Idade Média, nas obras do trovador Cuvelier, La chanson de Bertrand Du Guesclin (1385), do autor anônimo da Histoire de Messire Bertrand Du Guesclin (1387) e de Christine de Pizan em seu Livre des fais et bonnes meurs du sage roi Charles V (1404). Nossa análise se pauta sobre os conceitos de representação na história de Paul Ricoeur, com ênfase nos preceitos de representância e de identidade narrativa do autor, bem como na poética do relato histórico , metodologia desenvolvida por Leonardo Funes. A partir da leitura das fontes, verificamos que a construção da identidade narrativa de Bertrand Du Guesclin pelos autores se dava sobre uma reflexão do perfil de um preux chevalier , e principalmente sobre a cavalaria que estava em transformação naquele final de século XIV. Com base nessa análise, apontamos que a Escrita da História elegeu Bertrand Du Guesclin como modelo para uma redefinição da cavalaria cujos princípios se dariam pelo serviço à coroa francesa, pela disposição permanente das tropas, pela remuneração regular e pela performance guerreira de seus membros em detrimento dos laços linhagísticos. Since the 1980’s, modernism, claiming that nations are distinctively modern, has been the dominant view. In this thesis, I challenge this dominant view by doing an extensive case-study into late-medieval France, applying modernist definitions and approaches to a pre-modern era. France has by many regarded as one of the ‘founding fathers’ of the club of nations and has a long and rich history and thus makes a case-study for such an endeavour. I start with mapping the field of French identity formation in the thirteenth century, which mostly revolved around the royal court in Paris. With that established, I move on to the Hundred Years War and the consequences of this war for French identity.

    Authority, reputation, and the roles of Jeanne de Penthièvre in Book I of Froissart’s Chroniques Journal of Medieval History (forthcoming 2019: accepted manuscript) Erika Graham-Goering Department of History, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium Abstract: This article examines how a medieval noblewoman’s positive reputation could be framed through different aspects of seigneurial power using a case study of Jeanne de Penthièvre and her war for the duchy of Brittany. Froissart wrote about Jeanne in the three main redactions of the first book of his Chroniques. However, he focused in the Amiens manuscript on her position as an heiress and the object of her followers’ loyalty, while the B text largely reduced her prominence but planted the seeds for the active military role Jeanne assumed in the Rome redaction. Such changes did not move strictly between more- or less- accurate reports, but engaged with different tropes that had also featured in the official portrayals of Jeanne during her lifetime. These parallel constructions of reputation reveal a plasticity to models of lordly authority even in rhetorical contexts more usually associated with formulaic and conventional representations of elite society. Used with permission. ‘But Who Will Bell the Cat?’: Deschamps, Brinton, Langland, and the Hundred Years War Elizaveta Strakhov Surprisingly little work has been done on William Langland and contemporary responses to the Hundred Years War: surprising not in the least because this war was a dominant international political conflict over the course of the poet’s lifetime and because Langland openly references the famous Treaty of Brétigny in the continuation of the Meed episode in Passus III. In that passus, Meed invokes the Treaty as part of her defense of meed, and its centrality to good administrative rule, before the king at Westminster. She accuses Conscience of having demurred from battle for fear of a ‘dym cloude’ (B. 3. 193), which has been understood as a topical allusion to the so-called ‘Black Monday’ storm that beset Edward III’s troops at Chartres on April 13, 1360, just before the signing of the Treaty of Brétigny, much remarked upon by contemporary chroniclers.1 Meed goes on to accuse Conscience of having persuaded the king ‘to leven his lordshipe for a litel silver’ (B. 3. 207) and, far more unambiguously in the C-text, of having counseled him ‘to leten | In his enemyes handes his heritage of Fraunce’ (C.

    SHORT NOTE SIR HUGH CALVELEY: A REASSESSMENT W. McColly, Ph.D. Many years ago, J.C. Bridge published the only comprehen­ sive biographical sketch of the fourteenth-century Cheshire knight Sir Hugh Calveley.1 Bridge’s article is valuable, and any historian who wants to study Calveley’s life'' in detail should be grateful for it. However, certain facts about Calveley escaped the attention of Bridge, and other facts have surfaced since 1908. Hence a fresh view of the life of this remarkable figure would seem appropriate. To Bridge and to George Ormei'od2 we are indebted for drawing together certain essential information about Calveley’s life. This may be briefly summarized as follows. Calveley was no doubt born at the manor of Lea, on the Weaver about twelve miles SE of Chester, but the year is not known. By January 1347 he was serving under Sir Thomas Dagworth, the commander of the English forces in Brittany. He was one of the thirty knights on the English side in the celebrated Bataille de Trente,3 which was fought in 1351 on a plain between the Breton castles of Ploermel and Jesselin. During the 1350’s his career in France accelerated. He became the captain of his own company of mercenaries, and by 1359 he was in the service of the king of Navarre. Whether he was at Poitiers in 1356 is unknown. In the 1360’s he served in the forces of John de Montfort in the latter’s campaign against the duke of Brittany, and his role in the victory of Montfort at the battle of Auray (29 September 1364) was conspicuous.

Bennett, B.A., Ph.D. ARLY in the fifteenth century Sir Hugh Holes, a native of E Cheshire, purchased the manor of Oxhey, near Watford in Hertfordshire. As early as 1394 his legal work in his own region and elsewhere had brought him sufficient repute to secure his appointment to the king's bench, and his duties at Westminster had doubtless made imperative a seat closer to the capital. By the time of his death in 1416 his household had become established permanently at Oxhey, and his eldest son was joining the ranks of the Hertfordshire gentry. Meanwhile a second son, Andrew Holes, was pursuing a distinguished career at Oxford, which would eventually lead to advanced studies in Italy, and a reputa­ tion for humanist scholarship amongst popes and princes.1 At almost exactly the same time as Sir Hugh Holes was acquiring the manor of Oxhey, a compatriot of rather lesser means was marrying the heiress of a modest estate at Wheathamstead. Noth­ ing is known for certain about this Hugh Bostock, except for three qualities he shared with the redoubtable justice of the king's bench: he was a native of Cheshire; he settled in Hertfordshire; and he was the father of one of the foremost intellectuals of fifteenth-century England. John Bostock alias Wheathamstead was not only a monk of great suavity and learning, but also, as abbot of St Albans for two terms stretching from 1400 to 1420 and again from 1452 to 1465, one of the most influential men in the realm.2 The careers of Sir Hugh Holes, Hugh Bostock and their talented sons provide a salutary reminder that late medieval English society was neither so closed nor so static as is often imagined.

Several have related to the Grail legends. Closest to »The Song of Bertrand« is Bryant’s »History of William the Marshal«. Both recount the lives of the two outstanding knightly paragons of their respective generations, originally in poetic form. After his death Bertrand, Constable of France, 1370–1380, was even called the »tenth worthy«. There is also some overlap with »The True Chronicles of Jean le Bel«, dealing with the early years of the Hundred Years War, although Le Bel does not mention the young Du Guesclin, then making his reputation as a military captain in his natal Brittany.

  • The Hundred Years War Overview
    THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR (Overview) The war began in 1337 and lasted, intermittently, to the fall of Bordeaux (Gascony) to the French in 1453. (Legally the war did not end until 1492, when a peace treaty between England and France was finally signed, but there was no further threat to France from the English after 1453.) Between 1337 and 1453 there were only nine years of ratified peace (1360-1369). There was, however, an extended period from 1380 to 1417 in which there was little or no military activity. To complicate matters, the Hundred Years War also included side conflicts: Scotland (as an ally of the French) vs England, Flanders (as an ally of the English) vs France, the Burgundians vs the Armagnacs (a civil war between noble factions within France, 1407 to 1435), a civil war in Spain over succession to the throne and in Brittany over succession to the duchy in which the English and French supported different claimants. The war can be divided into five phases: 1. 1337-1360: the early phase of the war was dominated by a series of English chevauchées (mounted raids designed to devastate regions economically, destroy the morale of the enemy, and provide plunder for the raiders), two of which culminated in battles won by the English, Crecy in 1346 and Poitiers in 1356. The latter battle resulted in the capture of King John II of France, which led a revolt of the Parisian bourgeois under Etienne Marcel, a feudal revolt by Charles the Bad of Navaree, and a peasant revolt known as the Jacquerie.
